Yea I grew up in Houston, my best friend just graduated from UH, I attend multiple games every year, friends that I played with in high school have accepted scholarships there...
Houston Cougar football is NOT "big time college football money making business"
I couldn't disagree more.
EDIT: (See: Sumlin, Kevin)
If he chose USC I could see his reasoning. Close to home and have won big recently. Houston is in frickin Conference USA.
Neither did SMU
Big East in 2013.
I know. I'll make a Davonte Neal one soon lol.
Well, wishing negative Karma on someone could in turn release negative Karma onto yourself.. no? If you believe in that kind of stuff.
I wish the kid well and hope when he grows older he realizes it was a character mistake not to call Kelly and man up.
When the staff allows kids to take visits while verbally committed they leave themselves vulnerable to this situation.
why wouldn't he be in the SEC or at Oregon if he was up for sale? You think Houston won a bidding war?
There's a connection with him and the wr coach, who's probably involved in getting him paid.
I'll admit that the Baron Flenory tweet concerns me some and I can see how us taking a top prospect from a program like ND might raise suspicions.
On the other hand, why wouldn't he be in the SEC or at Oregon if he was up for sale? You think Houston won a bidding war? I can confirm that Houston is no SMU. We're foisting additional fees on our student body to fund a bond for a new stadium, which we desparately need. SMU raised $60M for renovations by calling 20 alumni recently.
We don't have cash, but we do have a program on the come, an explosive offense, and a surprisingly good track record of getting kids drafted to the NFL over the last 5 years. And, it's 74 degrees outside. Houston could be Boise State in a year or two, but we're also not in IDAHO. Of course, that means we could also be Miami. I just doubt it.
Finally, y'all are right about the way it was handled. The kid deserves a tiny little bit of slack, given the compressed timeline, but he should have called Coach Kelly himself.
I would have to agree that we should not wish bad karma on any of these kids making these extremely tough decisions...
Again, I feel sorry for some of these kids who it would seem are not getting enough guidance from the adults around them.
I wish Deontay would have selected a school who at least I can respect for their academics (Stanford etc) even if it wasn't ND.
I mean.. he could have gone anywhere.... ANYWHERE.
Houston?
What a hole.... an absolute hole. I feel bad for this kid.
But I do wish him all the success.... and hope it all works out in the end.
That's cool never been. The air is too think here today, I thought a joke would help. Probably not.
All I can say to this is...
I'm a high school basketball coach and I see kids this age make all kinds of weird decisions about all sorts of things. They see the world very differently than adults obviously. One day they like red... the next day they like blue. Something has 'swag' appeal one day and then it's played out the next.
And this... is exactly why the adults around them are supposed to provide guidance and direction. The harbour in the tempest.
Some kids have it... some kids don't.
And this is not coming from me from a ND fan perspective but more from a high school coach perspective who sees this kind of thing all the time.
DG has the academics and athletics to get himself into any school in the country and he chose Houston.
He could have went to Stanford, USC, ND... etc.
And he chose Houston.
How much quality guidance could he be getting?
Just like some of the kids who I see every day make crazy (unguided) decisions... I actually just shake my head and feel sorry for him that the adults who surround him... let him down so very badly.
It's funny how I'm happy that he didn't pick USC or UM but at the same time wished, for his sake, that he did (if he didn't pick ND that is). Time will tell but odds are he made a bad choice on and off the field. Where were his parents in all of this? Even if you are ok with his college choice (doubtful) you cannot let him make his decision in this fashion.
