Hard to believe this kid's parents would allow him to make such a collosal error in judgment. It's one thing to not want ND, but there were vastly better options than Houston. 18 year olds often have dopey judgment; that's why they have parents and guardians around.

Yea I grew up in Houston, my best friend just graduated from UH, I attend multiple games every year, friends that I played with in high school have accepted scholarships there...

Houston Cougar football is NOT "big time college football money making business"

I couldn't disagree more.

EDIT: (See: Sumlin, Kevin)

No one is saying, Houston is a powerhouse program. But they still went to a bowl game that paid them 1.2 million and was one game away from 17 million dollar BCS payout. Yes, Houston sucks a lot, u pretty much said so yourself, and for Houston, out of nowhere, land a 5 star WR overnight, are only clues that he was paid off.

If he chose USC I could see his reasoning. Close to home and have won big recently. Houston is in frickin Conference USA.

I'm sure this has been spoken of earlier but I am not going through all of the posts. My statement is this. I don't like it that he flipped at the last second but that is his decision. What I can't stand (if it is indeed true) is the fact that he did not contact Coach Kelly/ND to inform them of his decision. You should at least have the common courtesy to do so. Off subject but ND has to put a better product on the field-we are lucky that we get the classes that we do get. It is my opinion that Coach Kelly will get us on the right track but time will tell. Just as with IU in basketball, they hired the wrong coach after Knight and it took 3 coaches to get them on the right track (after 3 years). I feel ND is on the same course. ND hired the wrong coach after Holtz and it took several coaching changes to get us to the right course (if ND is indeed on the right track). Again, I really feel that we are. I put this entire season in the problem at the QB position (nothing against Rees-great kid).

All I can say to this is...
I'm a high school basketball coach and I see kids this age make all kinds of weird decisions about all sorts of things. They see the world very differently than adults obviously. One day they like red... the next day they like blue. Something has 'swag' appeal one day and then it's played out the next.

And this... is exactly why the adults around them are supposed to provide guidance and direction. The harbour in the tempest.

Some kids have it... some kids don't.

And this is not coming from me from a ND fan perspective but more from a high school coach perspective who sees this kind of thing all the time.

DG has the academics and athletics to get himself into any school in the country and he chose Houston.

He could have went to Stanford, USC, ND... etc.

And he chose Houston.

How much quality guidance could he be getting?

Just like some of the kids who I see every day make crazy (unguided) decisions... I actually just shake my head and feel sorry for him that the adults who surround him... let him down so very badly.

I'll admit that the Baron Flenory tweet concerns me some and I can see how us taking a top prospect from a program like ND might raise suspicions.

On the other hand, why wouldn't he be in the SEC or at Oregon if he was up for sale? You think Houston won a bidding war? I can confirm that Houston is no SMU. We're foisting additional fees on our student body to fund a bond for a new stadium, which we desparately need. SMU raised $60M for renovations by calling 20 alumni recently.

We don't have cash, but we do have a program on the come, an explosive offense, and a surprisingly good track record of getting kids drafted to the NFL over the last 5 years. And, it's 74 degrees outside. Houston could be Boise State in a year or two, but we're also not in IDAHO. Of course, that means we could also be Miami. I just doubt it.

Finally, y'all are right about the way it was handled. The kid deserves a tiny little bit of slack, given the compressed timeline, but he should have called Coach Kelly himself.

Well, wishing negative Karma on someone could in turn release negative Karma onto yourself.. no? If you believe in that kind of stuff.

I wish the kid well and hope when he grows older he realizes it was a character mistake not to call Kelly and man up.

When the staff allows kids to take visits while verbally committed they leave themselves vulnerable to this situation.

I agree, don't wish badly on him. However, that doesn't mean we should wish him good luck, because he sure as Hell doesn't deserve it.

I've given up on Karma, because honestly, if Karma existed, Notre Dame should win the next 15 national championships. The bad luck Notre Dame has had has been unwanted and getting very old. But I digress

DGB didn't tell Kelly about his visit to Houston, and afterwards he said he was still committed to Notre Dame. It's one thing to flip, but you just can't do it and expect to come out without scrutiny, especially how he did it.

I agree with him somewhat though. He's right, we shouldn't wish him good luck. He just spat in Notre Dame's face and wave a middle finger on his way to Houston. How can you just wipe it off and say good luck to you man! That's just despicable.

I would have to agree that we should not wish bad karma on any of these kids making these extremely tough decisions...

Again, I feel sorry for some of these kids who it would seem are not getting enough guidance from the adults around them.

I wish Deontay would have selected a school who at least I can respect for their academics (Stanford etc) even if it wasn't ND.

I mean.. he could have gone anywhere.... ANYWHERE.

Houston?

What a hole.... an absolute hole. I feel bad for this kid.

But I do wish him all the success.... and hope it all works out in the end.

It got to 60 degrees today in Indiana.

9 hours later and I still cannot believe this happened.. it really seems surreal.. it's hard to think of the last time I've seen someone throw so much away so quickly by their own choosing.. absolutely mind blowing, 9 hours later

Does anyone know if the sun is still going to come up tomorrow? Holy crap, you'd think he stopped by and kicked your dog on the way to Houston or something.

We win some, we lose some.....at the end of the day, there's always more pressing issues around the world than last second flips by HS kids.

the way i see it, this kid mislead and lied to everyone. he is a primadonna, he was empowered with a decision that got him alot of attention and to feed that feeling of empowerment, he had to generate this mini-controversy. I think this kid should get an audition for the Kardashian show, he fits in with all that manufactured drama of that show, and everything else that is fake in hollywood. I got no love this kid, i wish him the best, and I hope he never has any affilition with Notre Dame in the future.

It's funny how I'm happy that he didn't pick USC or UM but at the same time wished, for his sake, that he did (if he didn't pick ND that is). Time will tell but odds are he made a bad choice on and off the field. Where were his parents in all of this? Even if you are ok with his college choice (doubtful) you cannot let him make his decision in this fashion.

His mom seemed to know about it...and was 100% behind this decision to "shock the world." This is my interpretation of his FB.

See ya later I am done hearing about him. From Darby's seminole chop to a DGB backing out on his cousin I am over this madness. Kelly will continue to get his players and work his *** off so that is way I am confident in the future.

I can't understand this. It's kind of like he was on Let's make a Deal and chose curtain number 3, even though he could see the donkey behind the curtain.

Alas, it's over guys. Lets celebrate the guys that did sign up.
