In one school the Spanish course might be a serious, rigorous academic course while at another school (especially rural schools, the Spanish teacher's entire Spanish vocabulary might consist of the lyrics to La Bamba).
No kidding!
I went to Maumee Valley (Toledo guys know what I'm talking about) and was thrown into Spanish 2 without ever taking Spanish 1 and it was a hurricane of pain, just so insanely rigorous for a 13-year old kid who had never had it. Then I went to St. Francis to play football and the Latin 1 in 9th grade was excellent. I ended up at Cardinal Stritch and took French 1-3, which was great...but the Spanish teacher there showed the Spanish version of Free Willy 45% of the time and kids graduated knowing mostly "no hablo espanol" and "no comprendo."
It is a bit silly to not allow this guy to take some classes during the spring and summer to be eligible, if he is at all close.
