He said something about the value of his degree. Thank you for apologizing. Good luck to your program. I have no ill-feelings towards the program at all (unless there was something shady going on)

And yeah, I'm an alum too plenty of us are. Doesn't matter anyway

I am just used to so many Longhorn t-shirt fans bashing Houston all the time here in Texas, that's why I asked. I know with a large fan base such as you guys have, there will be plenty of fans that have no real affiliation with the school (which is fine, I wish Houston had MORE t-shirt fans, we are just now starting to get most of our alumni on board). I just don't think it's fair to bash another school when you're just a t-shirt fan, that's all.

Good luck to you all too, hopefully we will play each other in the near future (now that we're in the Big East). I'd love to make a trip up there and be part of the atmosphere you guys enjoy.

Fair points except
3. From what I understand, he simply informed him what he was doing. That's not the same as getting his blessing or whatnot. Tee's dad was quoted as saying he doesn't understand. Tee's family sounds pissed.
5. A point I made in a different post is that I find it hard to believe he could feel more comfortable somewhere he visited less than a week ago. It's foolish that temporary comfort would cause someone to decommit. Gunner has visited ND many times and has family members who played football for the program. He didn't make a rash decision

I think the direct quote attributed from Tee was "follow your heart" or somethiing along those lines. I think that is pretty black and white, and plus he absolutely does not need Tee's blessing on anything. I love Tee and understand they are cousins, but Deontay is his own person and has to make his own decisions.

Check, and I don't have to be an elitist to know that Houston isn't in the same galaxy as Notre Dame when it comes to education...

I can't remember being this disappointed about a recruit in a long time. It was really hard losing Darby and Decker a while ago but this is a huge blow to our class. Well we all gotloss a big surprise this NSD.......can't say I'm thrilled at all. I was hoping the addition of Deontay would have eased the loss of Floyd a little bit.

Josh Harvey Clemons is rethinking his UGA decision. Family saying they want him at UF and not UGA for whatever reason.

My point is, where is Deontay's family in this? Yes, he is his own person but he is still 18. When something isn't right or seems rushed, they should step in.

Coach Christian stated that in Houston's Signing Day Live Blog today; not Deontay.

It was probably just standard coach speak, but it still rubbed me the wrong way.

FWIW, I don't think he meant it in comparison to ND. Houston is a school and a football program on the rise, but it certainly isn't Notre Dame. There are plenty of reasons to choose to be a Cougar, but I respect that y'all probably don't want to hear that today.

OT, I'm excited that we're joining the Big East and looking forward to yelling back and forth with some of you at Madison Square Garden.

I feel like if Deontay had vistited Houston even a few days earlier and had more time to think about it he would be signed with Notre Dame right now. The less time recruits have to make a decision, the more likely they go with the hot hand and sign with Johnny come lately. It's really sad because I think in the long run he'll regret it.

And to the UH fan who was on here, I understand where you're coming from in terms of elitism (which, has gotten out of hand in this thread) but you have to understand where ND fans are coming from. Deontay just decommitted from a legit BCS school (say all you want about it being irrelevant, but there aren't many stages bigger than Notre Dame) with OUTSTANDING academics to a below average team that would have to be undfeated to even sniff a BCS bowl and isn't exactly an academic powerhouse.

It's really shocking to say the least, and I have a hard time believing that his relationship with the Houston coach was so good that he made a life-altering decision based on that. I won't accuse Houston of foul play unless there is some kind of evidence because I don't want to be "that guy," but I have to admit I wouldn't be surprised if it came out that way.

Oh well, go Irish.

Just as disappointed as everyone else. If he doesn't want to be at ND, then I don't want him there. Little disgusted that we passed on some big time recruits early on because we didn't think we had room. Hopefully a learning lesson for all of us to never assume anything until we get a signature. Have faith in DD and incoming wr class to go out and win some big games for us next year, and hopefully we won't have to deal with this issue again.

That's a double edged sword. Many of the recruits would be upset if you are recruiting their position. I truthfully do not understand Greenberry's decision in any way.

Remove Deontay's name. He is gone and no longer worthy of the prestige associated with playing football for Notre Dame. Notre Dame offered a scholarship when nobody else wanted him. It looks like the loyalty was only one way. He is unworthy of any further discussion on this board.

Other worthy candidates went unoffered because he held his offer until the last minute tying up a scholarship that could have gone elsewhere.

Just heard the news, damn this sucks bad. We still have a great class with or without Deontay.

Best of luck to him..

Yeah (SIAP) but just think: if Deontay had told us even on Tuesday afternoon that he was going to Houston, we could have offered Andrades and maybe got him over UF. He's no All-American but it would be nice to have another big WR for depth.

Deontay,

I know you read these boards so listen up. If you wanted to get out of Tee's shadow---something the media has claimed was one of your reasons---then you should have gone to USC. Then you could take 3-4 trips to Shepard Island and prove your worth.

Sincerely,

gkIrish

I think we should close this thread down for good and open up a 2013 recruit thread for this upcoming cycle. ND is done for the year, aside from Davonte Neal but now time to get excited up this upcoming class which people are saying is deeper then this years.

Agreed completely.

On to the next one, hopefully we show improvement in our recruiting strategy and progression during the Blue Gold game

Deontay(Balls) he should grow a "set"..... using the excuse of being in Tee's shadow is shameful because Tee lived his senior year of football thru Deontay.... I had family act similar to this needless to say i have friends now that i consider closer.....

I hate we lost him, don't seem to have the same respect for him now, but to each his own I guess. With that said, I'm not going to lose sleep over losing a wide receiver. We've got guys who can catch the ball. We had Michael Floyd and went 8-5, twice!

2012 is going to be about the QB, period. Greenberry wasn't going to better in 2012 than Floyd was in 2011. A QB that can put the ball in multiple receivers hands where they can make a play is way more important than any one receiver.

And from my point of view, Tee was way more important than Deontay.

Somebody made a point the other day that not having Floyd might actually be more beneficial to the team and I kinda agree. Basically, it forces Kiel/Hendrix/Golson to find a receiver instead of ignoring the other receiver's and relying on Floyd in a jump ball scenario. I can't remember how many times Rees forced the ball into coverage when you could see TJ Jones wide open on the other side.

Any talk about Notre Dame being irrelevant is for the trolls. Other than that, I agree with you on ND. I don't blame you for being dismayed that he'd choose not to go there.

You're wrong about Houston, though. We're a power program within the admittedly unwatchable CUSA. Moving to the Big East after next season will improve our BCS access. There are a few degree tracks at UH that rival those at ND (despite my doubts that this was a factor). And, we've sent as many WR's to the NFL as ND in the past 5 years. Plus, South Bend is probably perfect for some folks, but Houston offers a big city in a warm climate.

Regarding the idea that we bought him, Houston ain't SMU. We've had a brutal time raising funds to build a new stadium while they raised something like $60M by calling 20 donors. In fact, our students are currently voting on whether to fund a bond for the stadium with additional student fees because the alumni haven't been able to do it alone. College football is a dirty business, but we've been clean since the death of the SWC. My gut tells me he chose an exciting underdog over a troubled powerhouse.

Disappointed we missed out on a promising player like Greenberry, but I'm excited about the guys we've got. This just means Chris Brown definitely plays outside instead of the slot and Russell definitely plays slot instead of RB. Still a great class for offensive skill.
