It appears he will not make it through the weekend. PSU insiders are saying he is on life support and has been given last rites. The only link I have thats not premium is from twitter.

Bear Bryant's death four weeks after his retirement struck a big nerve with Paterno, who referred to it numerous times. Stunning.

Man that's awful. Really hate things ended the way they did for him. He was a great coach and did some good things. Probably should have had a couple more championships.

Prayers to the Paterno family.

he's not dead, correct? Hopefully he makes it through this somehow. I feel like we all knew he wouldn't make it far after he stopped coaching but still, wow

Sad to hear. Hope he recovers as unlikely as it may seem. Prayers to he and family.

Growing up in PA I have always respected Paterno for the values he seemingly attempted to instill in his program. Clearly this area has come into question not just in recent months, but in recent years. Personally, all I need to do is look at the multitude of former players through the decades that still flock to Paterno for counsel to realize the positive impact he has had on his players. Largely for this reason I chose to attend win #400 two seasons ago against Northwestern, and I'm glad I did. My thoughts and prayers are with JoePa, Sue, and his kids.

I heard its bs. Some links to it contain a virus. I cant find anything to verify it. A friend that has a sports talk radio show says its just a rumor. So guess we wait.

The main PSU news source is the Harrisburg Patriot News, and I see nothing posted from them on this topic. I'm questioning the legitimacy of this report as well at this point.

My dad texted--Harrisburg news says he went to hospital and has been taken off life support and his family has been summoned to his side for farewell.

I heard the rumor was that he reported trouble breathing but the hospital admin refused to investigate and take it any further.

I respect all of your opinions, but frankly I don't feel that he deserves any of it. He's a human being and as such I don't want him to suffer, but I think he's made it difficult for me to show much empathy for him.

In spite of all his accomplishments as a football coach, he was a failure in one of his most important duties as a member of the human race: the protection of the well-being children.

Its terribly sad, but, err, why the "wow"s?

He's looked ill, in a terminal way, for the last 2 years or so. I know they SAY they just discovered his cancer, but the reality is he's likely had it for a few years now. Add to that he's clearly been addled for about 10 years and this development isn't terribly surprising.

Its sad, and I feel for his family. He did a lot for college football. If only he'd retired 10 years ago (like everyone was basically asking him to) he might have enjoyed life more at the end and not had his legacy go into the toilet.

Its all very sad for a lot of reasons...

Indeed.
I still hate to see human life ending. That's also as far as my empathy goes. He's human and I don't take joy in anyone's suffering.
