Regarding scholarships, is it possible to count Arik Armstead as a basketball schollie if he redshirts next year? I know the scholarship goes under the highest revenue sport (obviously football), but is there some loophole that would allow us to count his scholarship towards basketball for his freshman year only, assuming he doesn't play?

No. If he is on the team and on a sports scholarship, it will be a football scholarship.

If someone can prove me wrong, be my guest, but I really don't think there's some 6'8" 300lb loophole in there...

Things are getting sticky with only four spaces left. Looks like my favourites Poole and Neal wont be coming at this stage.

At this stage I would rather have the two Armsteads than Nelson and Schyler Miles. Bit of a no brainer really,

... last year #1 priority was DL, this year it is DBs, next year linebackers should be the main concentration.

Agrred it should be a main concentration, but without a doubt QB should be priority #1 if we dont get Fuller this cycle...and possibly even if we do.

Yes. He would be on basketball scholarship until he plays any play in a football game.

Actually that's not a no-brainer. I'd take Nelson over Armstead any day. That being said, he's probably not coming here so I would be more than happy landing the two AAs. I also don't know why you ruled out Neal. I thought we were sitting pretty well with him.

I was torn for a few days but I think I would tend to disagree with you on this one. There are at least 5 kids every cycle who can bring to the table was Nelson does. He is an elite athlete for sure and would bring an incredible speed element to our offense, but at the same time there are FAR few kids out there as talented as Arik that are 6'8 with this kind of frame. This kid could legitimately grow to make Lynch and Tuitt look tiny while still possessing elite athleticism for a 3-4 DE. Special players like Arik don not come around too often.

I was anticipating Westerkamp being taken, then with the two AA and Fuller/Garnett there wouldn't room for any more.

I would love to get Nelson, but I am with T'eo. Arik is a special talent that paired with our already existing defensive talent, would make him a super star. Not to mention, if we have Arik, that probably means with have Armond.

One reason I really want Arik is that it makes it fairly easy to move Jones to OT. Thus, we get a 5* DE which allows us to turn a 4* DE into a 5* OT (which suddenly makes our OL haul this year very very good). If Armond comes too, that gives us great experience on the DL and we can use Cwynar's spot for him.

I think we aren't going to get Neal or Nelson at this point. Armstead/Armstead/Fuller/Westerkamp.

If the staff are chasing Westerkamp as hard as they say, then surely they can't take another WR in the class.

They would hardly let one of the lesser lights of the class decommit (?) as has been seen with other schools, would they?

Jarron is also a 5* DT. It's pretty arguable on what position he's better off at.

If that would cause us to get Arik then I am all in. This coaching STAFF is light years ahead of any coaching staff I can remember. BTW I am 31.

I am 31 also... Holtz' staffs were not light years behind this one... I'll just say that...

I don't know about that. I'll feel better once he has a "great" visit here.

Agreed, but after his "great" meeting with the coaches on Saturday it seems the first big hurdle has been passed! Odds of him now having a bad visit are slim. Then again, I'm biased lol

True, but we still have to contend with him being nearly a perfect fit for **** Rod's offense. He could easily pitch being DRob 2.0 or Pat White 2.0

Good point. Hopefully visions of himself being an integral part of ND's return to dominance will be too much for him to turn down!

He's a 5* DT on one site -- 247 -- and I think he'll lose that designation in the coming weeks (he already lost it on Scout). And plenty of knowledgable people (including his own coach) have opined that he's a great OT prospect (and he certainly looks that way to my admittedly amateur eye). Of course, elite DEs are harder to come by so if he can make it there, you let him -- but from what I've seen so far, that's not his best position, and if we're loaded on DL, why not move him to OT where he fits best anyway?

I posted this in the Armstead thread but on rivals there is an article where Keivarae says AFTER the Shumate commit that we'll get one more on defense at the time I assumed he meant Yuri, now I am thinking he meant Arik, so I am going with Arik.

"We added another playmaker on the defensive end," Russell said. "We've already got Tee Shepard, Ronald Darby and Deontay Greenberry. Shumate, he can hit, he can fly up to the ball, he can defend well. We'll add another player on the defensive end."

If you look at the quote as written, could there be a pun intended??? We'll add another player on the DEFENSIVE END??? I love it!

If he's visiting here, he's not visiting Arizona. It was one or the other for his last visit.
