BK On Tim Hinton:

Kelly says he'd know if one of his coaches weren't going to be with him.

"I have not talked to Urban Meyer."

Whatever that means.

I wonder all of the coaches that gave Meyer access to their program back in the spring wish they hadn't now. Notre Dame, Oregon, don't remember the rest.

Probably means that Urban would call him first to talk about possibly getting Hinton off of his staff.

I'm sure he had access to the limit as every other media representative has. Coaches work with each other all the time at camps and such. They all give the basics but won't dip into their secret vault.

I remember Urban commenting on how fast the practices were at Notre Dame and Oregon. He seemed impressed with the pace and organization. Just seemed like a learning moment the way he said it.

No big deal.

Hinton deflects OSU rumors - Notre Dame Football Blog - ESPN

Facing a media contingent Monday that had not had a chance to speak with him since Urban Meyer took over as Ohio State's head coach, Notre Dame running backs coach Tim Hinton was asked if he will remain with the Irish if Brian Kelly wants him around next year.

His response:

"Here's what I know: I am coaching at the University of Notre Dame. That's all for everything else, and that's all for everybody else. I've got one thing to do: I'm gonna coach Cierre Wood, I'm gonna coach Theo Riddick, which kind of got you guys last week, didn't it? And I'm gonna coach George [Atkinson III] and Cam [McDaniel] and that's the only thing we can do. And that's the bottom line: We're coaching the heck out of them. And do I want to be at Notre Dame? Absolutely."
The Buckeyes hired Meyer as their head coach Nov. 28. Meyer and Hinton have both been graduate assistants under former Ohio State head coach Earle Bruce.

Steve Hinton, Tim's brother, told the Lancaster Eagle Gazette on Nov. 29 that he would not be surprised if Meyer offered Tim Hinton a job.

"Whenever Urban has gone to be a head coach, he has offered Tim jobs," Steve Hinton said. "(Tim) had young kids and didn't want to move for that reason. I know Tim and Urban talk throughout the year, and that they had a really good working relationship."

Steve Hinton was unsure whether his younger brother would accept an Ohio State position under Meyer if he was pursued.

"It would be a tough decision to stay or to come home, especially because he loves Notre Dame and the atmosphere that's there," Steve Hinton said. "As a brother, I would love for him to come home, but I would understand if he stayed at Notre Dame."

On Monday, Tim Hinton said there are no offers on the table.

"Don't read anything behind the scenes," Hinton said. "I'm telling you, there's nothing behind the scenes. And obviously I am in a great place with Coach Kelly, I love where I'm at. And the bottom line is this is a very special place."
Hinton said he was not surprised Meyer got back into coaching after a one-year hiatus, saying there are few who leave the game without immediately missing it.

"No, not really," Hinton said. "It's the funniest thing, and I tell people this all the time, because I'm very diverse — I was a high school coach for a long period of time and then college football. You name the guy that got out that didn't want back in. You name it. Because who knows who that guy is? You know what I mean? Every one, and I keep thinking as I get grayer and older I keep thinking: my time's coming.

"But every one of my buddies have all gotten back in, wanting to do something. None of them want to sit on a couch and relax, I can tell you that. So in that part of it, no it doesn't surprise me in that fashion. God bless him. I wish him a lot of luck at Ohio State. He's obviously proven to be a great football coach. The bottom line is I don't want him touching any of my recruits, you know? That's how it goes and works, right?"

Well this issue is certainly not dead based upon Hinton's replies.

He had an opportunity to point blank say that he would be back at ND next year and he didn't say that. Instead he does what all prospective Head Coaches/asst coaches do and deflected the question by rambling on.

Do you want to be at ND? Absolutely is his reply, which he can honestly say. But he may want to be at OSU with Urban more.

His avoidance of the question certainly gives me a feeling he is gone as soon as the bowl game is over IMO

I at least like the part where he says he doesn't want Meyer touching any of his recruits. You can read into that a little bit. If he wants a raise, he can't come out and say he is absolutely not going anywhere under any circumstances, but if he had one foot out the door he could have danced around those questions more than he did.

Classic "I'm not going to directly say no" response. Will be interested to see how it plays out but it seems like he is being honorable on the recruiting/current loyalty front which is about all you can ask. These are just jobs like you and I have and everyone out there would take the "best" job for themselves. So if he decides that's ND, awesome. If not, good for him.

I agree. I have a feeling he'll be gone but I like the way it's going down so far. It seems as though if he does go it won't be until after the bowl game.

Article is referencing the same discussion that we've been talking about. Nothing new in the article. Some people will point to his answers as proof he is staying by him professing love for ND. Others will point to refusal to answer a simple question with a simple answer as reason to suspect that he is just as likely to leave after the bowl game if Urban asks him to join him. I tend to believe the second.

If Hinton leaves, I don't think he tries to steal any of his recruits. But if one of his recruits is the one initiating the discussion, I doubt if he would say no if it was a position of need.

I don't know. I don't remember seeing this quote in the prior article:

“I was a high school coach for a long period of time for certain reasons,” he said. “A lot of those are the values of the game of football. I still believe in trying to work with young men, developing young men’s character, developing the whole person, developing the opportunities for them to be successful in life. I’ve really not gotten into the football factory mentality. For me, that’s important. There isn’t a place that sells that and does that better than Notre Dame.

“When you look at that picture, when you talk about the whole person, you talk about faith, you talk about academics, you talk about the ability to grow and manage your time, academic load and then develop well on the football field, Notre Dame has tremendous opportunities.”

Maybe he is just saying that because he is here now, but it seems like he is taking a little dig at OSU there ("I've never really gotten into the football factory mentality"), and I'm not sure why he would bother saying that if he knows he will end up at OSU in a couple of weeks. He could have just not said it and basically accomplished the same thing as far as addressing the rumors.

plus he never said "The bottom line is that I’m going to coach at Notre Dame as long as I can.”

"BCastOZone: Being told by multiple sources that Ohio native Tim Hinton will leave Notre Dame to become Urban Meyer's TE coach."

And this guy is legit.

This is now officially a cluster ****

I'm assuming the assts. are under contracts too? If so then I assume Notre Dame would have to release them, especially if it appears to be a lateral move?

Can't imagine Notre Dame would let him go without some conditions that he can't try and poach current commitments.

Seriously, I have a family member who has been in the coaching game for 40+ and I've never heard of anything like this. Granted, I was younger when he was coaching his bigger gigs and he has transitioned into more of a coaching sage on two staffs over the last 10 years: coaching, yeah..a bit, but mostly golfing and schmoozing boosters and doing some recruiting.

He was a head coach at lower levels (NAIA) but has always been a position coach at the programs where he was at and he never left one program to be a position coach at another. I don't understand why Hinton would consider such a move ($$$??) and why people care so much (recruiting???).

It just seems asinine to me that we care and that he'd make such a move.

Its Urban Meyer. Its Ohio St. It directly affects our recruiting. I think the unspoken rule is the HC doesn't care if you move along, as long as it is a upward move, non-lateral.

So for we, the fans, it's about recruiting.
As far as the HC concerns, well, that's just common sense. My supervisor, as all bosses normally are, has always been kind to people who leave if they are taking a step up (at least internally) but she is a raging bizzo when people make a lateral move to another department internally. Externally she's decent if someone leaves for personal reasons (i.e. marry somebody who enables him/her not to work anymore) or is going to make more money but, again, if somebody takes a position externally that won't pay more then she, again, is not friendly.

Okay, so I understand why so many fans care, which was one piece. The second piece is why Hinton, himself, would do it? Money? It can't be about self aggrandizement as I can't imagine there is any more glory in being a RB coach than a TE coach (especially since the most talked about tight end Meyer has ever produced is well...Tebow, who was talked about as potential tight end). I don't think Ohio State is more prestigious than ND (of course I'm delusional) so it can only be money.

Aaron Hernandez, is a pretty damn good TE.

Good call on that one. I admit, I don't pay much attention to the NFL. I don't remember Hernandez at Florida, probably because he was at Florida in the Tebow years....he's really the only guy, aside from Chris Leak and Trattou (for not so good reasons) that I can remember from those years.
