In as much as I don't see the merits in rehashing Clausen's career, what the hey. The team's record with him as a starter was a shade over .500, I don't recall him winning any close games, against teams of equal or superior talent I recall him shrinking from the big moments more than a few times. As far as the NFL draft goes I think most people would call that a wasted pick by Carolina. His arm strength is suspect, he threw 3 tds to 9 interception last season and had a QB rating of 58.4. Don't bother talking about rookies suceeding in the NFL either because, if he was so great, he should have been able to have seen the same type of success (at least statistically) that his successor in Carolina has delivered, what Andy Dalton has delivered, the list could go on. I wish him well, why wouldn't I? First off, I don't want anybody to fail and, even more importantly, it would be a credit to Notre Dame if he ever does do well. But I don't see it, frankly.

The whole QB-record-as-a-method-of-evaluation thing is put to bed just by comparing Jimmy's record with Tommy Rees's. Jimmy has been cursed by (1) being thrown into the fire before he could fairly be expected to be ready and (2) never being surrounded with sufficient talent, both in his time at ND and Carolina.

Also, for the record, "inasmuch" is one word.

Off the top of my head he beat Purdue with a few seconds left in 09, and won tough games agaisnt MSU and Washington in the same year. Now I'm all for using records as an indication of how good someone is, but this is a case where he was on HORRIBLE teams. In his career he had no run game, offensive line, and a bad defense. And in the NFL your an idiot if you blame his performance in Carolina on him last year. Did you watch a single one of their games. They were horrible and it was hardly his fault there were injuries galore on that team. Not to mention the fact the Clausen shouldn't have played becasue of a hurt foot the entire season. I'll be so bold as to say the Clausen may be the best QB we see in the next 10 years at ND.

Okay, well what changed about Carolina's team from this year to last year? As far as being on horrible teams at ND, I would question that assumption but that's a difficult debate because it's entirely subjective. There are Jimmy apologists and those of us who may not judge him too harshly. Whatever the case maybe, I don't think it would or will matter who he plays for in the NFL, he's not going to be a good professional player.

Yea that Clausen was sure a let down at ND. I CAN'T BELIEVE he couldn't single handedly hold opposing offenses to less than 27 points a game in between his own offensive snaps where he led a team with virtually no ground game to some ridiculous offensive #s.

You've got the be joking me. Clausen if he came back for his Sr year would have put every Notre Dame passing record at levels that wouldnt be touched for many years.

People who use his "teams record" with him at QB are taking such a short sighted approach to hating on the kid that it's embarrassing.

In 2009 Notre Dame lost:
To Michigan 38-34. In that game Clausen was 25-42 for 336 yds 3TDs 0 Ints.
To USC 34-27. Clausen was 24-43 for 260 yds 2 TDs 0 Ints
To Stanford 45-38. Clausen was 23-30 (76.7%) 340 yds 5 TDs 0 Ints!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Uconn 33-30. Clausen was 30-45 329 yds 2 TDs 0 Ints
To Navy 23-21. Clausen was 37-51 (72.5%) 452 yds 2 Tds 1 Int
To Pitt 27-22. Clausen was 27-42 283 yds 1 TD 1 Int

So in his teams 6 losses he was 166-253 (66%) and threw for 15 TDs versus 2 Ints.
Oh yea and he threw for 333 yds per game in those losses, and played most of the season with a torn ligament in his toe.

Anybody who says Clausen was a let down at ND either didn't watch most of his career or has a very questionable football IQ. He was likely the reason they won any games at all those years.

Also worth noting in those 6 losses Notre Dame averaged a whopping 98 yards per game rushing. The defense allowed 33 ppg in those contests. For comaprison's sake ND only allowed 33 points in a single game twice all year this year. Michigan, and Air Force which was mostly meaningless pts in mop up duty, yet Clausen is a let down, and Tommy Rees is a "gamer".

I'm going to suggest you just let this one go. The more you push the debate along the worse you're going to look.

If Kiel comes to ND, and does anything remotely close to what Clausen was able to achieve here, with the development our defense and team overall has made under Coach Kelly this will be a VERY dangerous team.

That's a matter of preference. The phrase has commonly been glued together since the 17the century but that doesn't make it absolutely proper to use them as one word. That would be akin to telling somebody who say "is not" that they have to use "isn't" or perhaps worse "ain't". I've seen the words glued together in some text and in others I've seen them split.

What has changed with Carolina? Well, a great deal has changed. But, for specifics, a new coach, a healthy steve smith and a host of capable TE's to name a few.

Look, Jimmy not be a great NFL QB, but I also think he was given a raw deal last year. He also had one of the most incredible years as a QB his junior season with no running game and no defense. He was very good.

He got torn up by good teams and stop saying that he had a crap team around him. If he was such a superstar he should have been much, much better. And from what I recall Clausen would normally rack up a lot of yards when games were no longer in doubt and he was facing soft coverages. You've got your opinion, I've got mine. I didn't mention Clausen to open up a debate, it's my opinion and his record speaks for itself. I spent three years aruging this with four of my closest friends (one sharing my viewpoint, three sharing the other). You have a low football IQ if you think a player's entire worth and the most accurate evalutation of a player is based on statistics.

If I'm the Redskins or another team out there with a high draft pick that can't get Luck or Barkley I'm drafting to a position of need and trading a 4th rounder for Clausen. The guy needs a chance.

EDIT: WTF this is Gunner's thread? I didn't even look at the tile before posting a response. PLEASE cut the Clausen crap in here. Mod please move?

If we've learned anything from watching Tommy Rees go 12-3, or whatever it is as a starter, it's that the record does not always speak for itself. Clausen was amazing. His decisions were perfect, his passes accurate, and his touch made me ink.

It's not really the same as a contraction. I agree, it's not so common therefore it is more of a preference though. If you want to compare it to anything, it is more like the word "maybe". It's still proper to say "may be", but most would still use "maybe".

I provided the facts and statistics to prove others. Please provide evidence to support your claim, or opinion as you call it. Clausen could not play defense which is why his teams went 6-6...NO OTHER REASON! He answered the bell and responded to everybody's shot all season long, unfortunately after each scoring drive the defense would come out and give it right back. Go watch the final Stanford game again...microcosm of Clausen's career at ND. He would have been a legitimate Heisman contender that year with any defense around him, and could have potentially won it last year had he returned. If that's a let down, then what the hell is our current QB situation? All the more reason we need Gunner Kiel to be Irish when it's all said and done.

How did Jimmy "get torn up by good teams"? There was an excellent post earlier showing his stats from the losses - are you choosing to just ignore that? He was a damn good quarterback on a pretty bad team. Also, his offensive line wasn't even close to the level they are at now.

Thanks mods.

Clausen had a Heisman worthy 2009 season. If he had any defense that team could have easily been BCS bound.

No problem, and I agree with your assessment. Loved watching Jimmy and the O play, cringed when D was on the field that year.

Clausen's junior year quarterbacking was as fine as I've ever seen, from any quarterback on any team.

289 of 425 (68%), for 3722 yards (310.2 ypg) and 28 touchdowns with 4 interceptions*.*

*Of the four interceptions, I think only one or two of them were "legitimate;" as in, a few of them hit players right on the numbers/hands and were deflected. I've never liked faulting a quarterback for that, but if you're going to his him YAC, then I guess it's fair.

*He did all of that with a torn ligament in his foot.

I should also add, that people who think he was a letdown probably expected the four national championships he predicted. In that event, they are probably dumber than dumb.

He did NOT predict four national championships. He said he hoped to play for four.

Correct.

Everyone rags on him about his lofty goals of four Heismans and four national championships, but isn't that everyone's goal coming into major college ball?

Haha, I don't know if anyone's confident enough to think he can win 4 Heismans

Weren't you the one about 3 or 4 games into 2009 who said that there were 20 or 30 better QBs that Clausen, and then proceeded to get out a preseason magazine listing off various QBs, including Tulsa's backup? Not trying to be a ****, but you were biased then and you're biased now.

Another one of his interceptions was a hail mary at the end of a half where shaq evans decided he was just going to let the db have the ball. Though to be fair, his hail mary against WSU where Golden pulled it down over three guys could have easily been an interception, so I guess it evens out. Still doesn't detract from the point that he was spectacular his junior year.
