More ignorance about the situation than sarcasm. I don't follow LSU too much, just know that #12 is a 5th year senior and thought that #9 was graduating as well. That's why I put lack of QB competition, meaning early PT.

haha...my bad. to answer your question for the exact reasons GITF relayed ;) and yes early PT especially since he's an EE

Wiltfong is pretty much the only recruiting analyst that the Kiels talk to on a regular basis. He formed a good relationship with them by going to so many of Gunner's games and living so close to Columbus (Steve lives in Indy). If he still thinks ND is the leader and the team to beat then I feel pretty confident that we are. I would put our chances at 70-75%.

A far cry from what I thought our chances were when he first decommitted.

Thank you Sir! I hope we get him, he seems like a natural for Kelly's offense and for ND. Even if I wasn't a ND fan, I don't see him fitting in at a school like LSU.

Everyone keeps saying how Kiel's dad was on the practice field and loved how LSU practices were run. Not sure if that means anything but I think ND/LSU battle from here on out.

Could you elaborate? Reading phrases like that literally makes me cringe.

GO GUNNER!!!.. and of course, GO IRISH!!!

The rumors started on SEC boards are insane. One LSU fan is claiming a source within the Indianapolis Colts that Gunner is going to LSU. Another says he has a source in Soth Bend that ND doesn't really want him.

Also I found this:
@ClayTravisBGID Gunner Kiel at Vandy's Bowl announcement, he said quote "this is awesome"

What would someone within the Colts organization and a random person in South Bend have to do with Notre Dame's recruitment of Gunner Kiel? lol

I hate things like this. What was he supposed to say? This sucks?

I agree, but think not to many turn out that well..

Youre right. That is kind of an outlier. But Kiel is number 1/2 at his position and has been chased by every top program since day one. If/when we land him, he will be a huge pick up.

This was my subtle way of transitioning back to Kiel conversation...

He has all the tools and is a competent runner, which is all Kelly needs from his quarterback.

Zach Mettenberger is LSU's heir apparent. It's unlikely that Kiel would play early if he went to LSU.

We have Hendrix, Golson no way he starts over hendrix.. if so then i think he would start over Zach... If gunner didn't deny ND already, and then go on alot of OVs then SEC title game with LSU i'd say we have a shot.. Looks like he's willing to play away from home hence the visits to SEC..

Gunner is obviously a big time prospect and it would be fantastic if we landed him but the fact is he is not a dire need in this class.

That about sums it up. IMO he is more valuable to ND as a recruit(er) this cycle.
If he was a '13 recruit, I'd love to see him in Blue and Gold, but if he doesn't go Irish, my response this year will be, "Meh"

Exactly. Let's be honest guys we want him mostly to increase our chances with elite prospects like Banner, Garnett, every WR, etc

I disagree. Top rated QBs per Rivals:

2011-Jeff Driskel
2010-Jake Heaps
2009-Matt Barkley
2008-Blaine Gabbert
2007-Jimmy Clausen
2006-Matt Stafford
2005-Mark Sanchez

*I think it would be crazy to brush off how big signing Kiel would be.

Not to mention that he's the first 5 star since Barkley in 2009.

I like Golson but lets face it this kid would come here and would have the best tools to win.

I think that you just need to look at what a good QB can do for a team.. Andrew Luck kind of talent who knows, but what he was able to do with less says something. If Gunner is as good as they say then that can be the difference of playing in motor city bowls and BCS bowls. I think that it makes him more important than in just terms of getting more recruits.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Picking up Gunner would be HUGE. Just because you think one of the guys currently here will lead us to a BCS game doesn't mean they will. Even if they can, you constantly need as many talented guys competing for starting quarterback as possible.

The crazy thing is only two of those QB's (Sanchez and Stafford) took their teams to BCS Bowl (each only once) and none won a National Championship.

Don't get me wrong I would never want to turn away a 5 star recruit and would take Gunner without question. But a top QB is only part of a bigger puzzle.

Still a pretty big piece to that puzzle though...

Barkley would be in a BCS bowl this year if it wasn't for sanctions, and Driskel and Heaps are just getting started. This season should be proof positive that an elite QB is the difference between 10-2 and 8-4.

I hate to say it, but if eligible, I'm thinking Southern Cal goes to a BCS game this year. I would put Barkley in that list as well.

Only if USC would've beaten Oregon in Autzen a second time for the Pac-12 championship.

Good point. Even if they lost the rematch, I still think Barkley has proven his worth to his team, and shown how much better they are with him taking snaps.

@OCirish They would've needed to win the Pac-12 title game, otherwise you would already have Stanford and Oregon in the BCS. Can't have all three.

I think it will be funny to read this thread in a couple years.

"I can't believe how apathetic so many people were to Kiel coming to Notre Dame."

You'll hear that a lot down the road.
