This is how I think we finish the class (in no particular order):

Kiel
Darboh or Payton
McNamara
Stanley
Ekanem
Poole
Rios
Neal

At most 7 spots. I don't think we take another WR besides Neal but other than that I agree with all your predictions.

I don't think we would take 8 more recruits.

I'm thinking Rios is next. Maybe one or two commitments in December followed by the final 5-6 in January.

Psst, add up "thinking Rios" + "one or two" + "final 5-6"= 8 on the upside, 9 in Rios wasn't part of your "one or two".

Rios would be included in that one or two in December.

I'm thinking 7 more. So if we got one in December, we'd take 6 in January. If two in December, 5 in January.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Recruiting - Smitty's Blog - IrishSportsDaily.com

Recruiting Thoughts

Wednesday, 30 November 2011
Brian Smith

With the banquet weekend closing in, Urban Meyer taking over at the Ohio State University, and a plethora of recruits still on the board, it’s time for some quick points about each matter.

The banquet weekend could be very important to Notre Dame. It’s been a long time since that’s been the case.

Irish commitment Taylor Decker and other committed recruits will likely take official visits to Notre Dame, and of course uncommitted recruits will attend the banquet as well. Some of the names expected to be in (this list will change) include Josh Garnett, Gunner Kiel, Davonte Neal, and Schyler Miles. Keep in mind that this list could grow in numbers or decrease in numbers at a moment’s notice.

From this list of prospects, all of them are important, but it’s hard to go against the elite signal caller if Irish fans could just wish for one player to jump onboard. Garnett, however, is an elite offensive tackle. Those are rare, too. Neal brings that gamebreaker speed to the table, and Miles could play fullback or possibly linebacker in conjunction with helping to recruit his teammate Nelson Agholor.

Personally, I like Notre Dame’s chances with Kiel the best, but that’s still a tough call. He’s not easy to read. Louisiana State? Vanderbilt? Garnett appears to be leaning towards Stanford (allegedly), and Neal is still attempting to set up visits. What the banquet means is an opportunity for Notre Dame. It could go well or be a disaster. If the Irish earn a couple of big-time commitments it helps build momentum with other recruits. The opposite is also true if nobody jumps on board.

Meyer to OSU: ND fans should not be worried

Notre Dame will still get some of the Catholic school recruits from Ohio. Notre Dame always did, and that trend will continue. Very few of the public school players from Ohio attended Notre Dame in the past twenty years, however, at least not the ones coveted by Ohio State. With Meyer in Columbus expect more of the same.

The good news stems from Meyer keeping some of those public school recruits away from Ann Arbor. The biggest loser, by far, will be Michigan with Meyer’s hiring. Michigan will lose several recruits that it would have signed if Meyer decided to stay in the broadcast booth.

The one area that Meyer could do damage to any program is down in Florida and Dixie in general. He’s well known in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and of course the state of Florida. Notre Dame will butt heads with Meyer far more often south of the Mason Dixon Line than it does within the state of Ohio, or at least it will in terms of competitive recruiting battles. Notre Dame is simply not going to land many recruits that grew up in Ohio if the Buckeyes offer. That state holds a very strong bond to its premiere state institution.

Best Bets

Just talking out loud, here are three players I feel good about Notre Dame signing, as it stands today anyway. I believe Notre Dame will push the eighty-five scholarship limit with this recruiting class combined with the returning fifth-year players.

Brian Poole

Schyler Miles

Marcus Rios

We’ll see how well I do on national signing day. Notre Dame will probably sign a few other recruits as well.

good stuff there...thanks.

i think we're ok with the catholic schools in the Cincy region, where coach kelly has ties, but in the cleveland and cbus region we have no chance. cbus is buckeye country through and through and in cleveland we've been battling osu, michigan, and even pitt recently

Some great recruiting nuggets from Irish Sports Daily publisher Mike Frank on the ISD Members Board. (Premium)

Someone dissect.

Eh, because they're nuggets there is no real way to summarize without plagiarizing. I will say that there is an encouraging nugget for Poole, and everything else about is what it is.

No one knows what Armstead is thinking.. but the Irish did much to help there case..

Shaq- Mom likes ND, and he wants ND to keep recruiting him, we have better chances with him if we can get Armstead

Sitting Pretty with Poole... work left to do but this could happen

Agholor- most people think it is still a 2 team race with Irish and Gators, many schools trying to get into the mix....

Irish like Redmond at DB will visit

we are probably out for Banner

K Russell- our chances will improve if UW doesn't get Banner and Garnett, people thinking Banner will be down to OU, Meatchicken, and OU

interesting...do russell and banner/garnett not get along? how does them going to washington help our chances i wonder?

On a different note.... ND is absolutely swinging for the fences here to close out this class. I know people have done the math before, but assuming Manti/Eifert stay, no transfers, and four 5th year players... we've got like 7 slots left, right?

This is where ND not taking the Alabama or LSU approach to things hurts because if we pushed out, say, Luke Massa then BOOM there's your slot for Gunner Kiel. Or injury prone Jake Golic and BOOM there's your spot for McNamara. But unlike those football factories, ND doesn't treat players like pieces of meat and has some morals... and I'd rather pass on a couple guys than compromise that. It's going to be very, very interesting to see what happens here with limited spots and a lot of guys with legit ND interest but that probably don't have us as a leader.

I'm assuming ISD's write up on Poole is similar to what I posted from II the other day. It was quite encouraging. Anybody interested should just check out Poole's thread. I'm not a member at ISD but I doubt their information is widely different from II's at this point.

I would seriously sh!t if we ended up with Poole. I still have a feeling that he will end up at UF, but as you all know, I am an optimist.

Kiel, Banner, Agholor, Poole, Myles, Odenigbo, Rios and McNamara.... has a nice ring to it, eh?

That would have to be the top way to finish off this class

Don't know that I'd prefer Myles over Armstead, Stanley, Neal, Patyon, Ekanem, or a host of others.

But all others-- please sign on the dotted line!

it might be pretty safe to say that we wont get nelson without schyler...so i see what wooly's doing here.

only substitution for me would be neal for mcnamara, simply based on numbers at the position, not that i don't want taylor

Good read from Keith Arnold over at Inside the Irish. The more I read his stuff, the more I believe he keeps an eye on this site. Note his last point in the article. See Below.

KA:
"Still — it deserves a mention: The internet is a very open playground, and there’s now really easy ways to follow your favorite athletes and recruits, be it on Twitter, Facebook, or whatever it is the kids are enjoying these days. But it deserves an even stronger mention — consider the recruiting world the zoo. Stare all you want at the lions and tigers, but please — don’t touch them. Nothing good can happen.

So cheer for your favorite team to sign that five-star running back or quarterback, but please use your head. Don’t send messages, emails, Twitter messages, or anything else to these kids pushing them to a school. If you donate money to your favorite college, you might be committing a recruiting violation. Even if you don’t, it’s just plain weird. Think back to those days when you were 17. Would you want to see the 2011 you poking around in your life as you try and pick a college? Me neither".

That's an interesting point about it being a recruiting violation if you donate money to the school.

We've mentioned this on this board before. Hence why I came up with the diabolical scheme that we all donate a dollar to USC and start talking to recruits. :devil_2:
