The Forde-Yard Dash: Pat joins the Yahoo! party - College Football - Rivals.com

In keeping with the times, The Dash Board of Directors (membership total: one) gave itself permission in mid-October to explore other options in terms of Internet affiliation. The Dash received interest from Yahoo! Sports. After careful consideration, The Dash applied for membership and was accepted by the worldwide leader in sports journalism.

Effective date: Nov. 1, 2011.

Exit fees from previous affiliation: zero.

There was no political involvement in the negotiations, and no threat of lawsuits. Orangebloods.com did not break the story. And travel to competitions will not be any different than it previously had been – The Dash, as most of you know, travels by Bus.

So that’s the scoop, for the much-appreciated readers who were wondering what happened the past couple weeks. The Dash is very happily back typing – same silly stuff, different web address. Let’s get back to it.

Here's Pat Forde's "Forde-Yard Dash" column, now featured on Yahoo Sports/Rivals. He left ESPN after 7 years of work. I think this is another sign of the rise of a legitimate competitor to ESPN's monopoly on sports reporting. I've found Yahoo's thorough investigative journalism a refreshing change from the crap ESPN has put out the past several years.

IIRC, you said the same thing when Feldman left.

Which of ESPN's current CFB analysts do you think would be a big loss if he or she left the mothership?

Actually I said that Feldman was a huge loss and ESPN is making a huge mistake. Feldman was there since they first started ESPN.COM and picking him over Craig James was travesty.

Herbstreit would be a huge loss. Mel Kiper Jr another one.

That's fair. I think Forde is a bigger loss than you imagine, though. His Forde Yard Dash was ESPN's most popular CFB column. With Feldman and Forde gone, ESPN has lost their two best CFB writers.

Do they have anyone worth reading anymore?

Ever since that show "The Experts" on ESPNU aired, ESPN lost all credibility to me even if they had Feldman and Forde on that show. I just can't stand listening to those other blithering idiots like Mike Belotti and his bias for the PAC10/12 or Mark Schlabaugh (spelling?) for his dickloving SEC love.

I think it is great that Feldman and Forde and probably my favorite Dan Patrick get to bash the mothership all they want now.

When I want serious CFB analysis, I turn to the Worldwide Leader.

For my money, there's nothing better than Criag James, Jesse Palmer, and David Pollack glad-handing each other and spouting sport platitudes.

I'm in my phone so I can't tell is this is in sarcasm font, but you forgot Danny Kannell from that list of great minds.

ESPN crossing Bruce Feldman is like when Apple kicked Steve Jobs to the curb and then abruptly started tanking. He freaking built that place. And while the ripple effects seem minimal now, when NBC or CBS or Yahoo! finally starts attacking that monopoly hardcore in the next ~5 years it won't seem like a little deal anymore. People will leave the "mothership" as soon as they get another offer.

ESPN has lost more then just Feldman and Forde. They lost Matt Moseley NFC East Blogger, two of their best NHL writers as well. Peter Gammons left a little while ago. Rich Eisen to the NFL Network.

Keith Olberman as well.

How many great sports people does one company have to run off??

Oh well, just wait and watch "Rome burn"

(see what I did there?)

Never really cared for Forde. I found that I usually dislike his articles. Not that I care much for ESPN journalism, when I go to the site I just take away the facts and stats. The opinions generally suck.

I believe the whole reason that Forde left was because of how Espn treated Feldman after he was given permission (by Espn) to write the book for Mike Leach. Craig James threw a temper tantrum when the book came out, Feldman was let go/left Espn.... Word on the street is that many other Espn journalists are shopping around due to the Espn/Feldman incident.

Anyone with even a shred of journalistic integrity left at ESPN has been looking for a way out since the Feldman take down. ESPN has such an absurdly large number of conflicts that real sports reporting is virtually impossible.

I thought so. You can't thank me later for saving your fingers the typing, instead they can attend to more important threads such as the Kim Kardashian marriage thread, lol.

Greg Easterbrook is the only "columnist" I read on their site. He's great.

I only go there otherwise to check headlines, see scores, see box scores, etc. I have to admit (and I cringe typing this) that ESPN's site is pretty good for, more or less, keeping up with the big games, following your team, and stats. In fact, I think their website is the best for things of that nature (and now I might seriously have to cut off my hands for typing something positive about ESPN).

It's depressing seeing all the people on here who detest ESPN, much like myself and virtually all of my friends. We all want something different and better...but yet we're so often stuck with those sh!tbags because of their domination in televising games.

Outside of college football season, TSN.ca, NHL.com and Irish Envy are all I really want for internet sporting news. Do definitely agree that there's a lot to like about ESPN, it has one of the best looking and deepest sites on the internet.

Ha! I used to read him, but he is too much. I know I've sent people to Drew Magary's weekly takedown of Peter King at his site, kissingsuzykulber, but in his weekly NFL column for deadspin he gives Easterbrook the same treatment. A sample:

Gregg Easterbrook Is A Haughty Dipshit

putz.jpg

Gregg is piping hot that people used the word "miracle" to describe Tim Tebow's comeback win over the Dolphins.

Sports commentators are too quick to invoke the word miracle — which means an event outside human understanding of physical law.

Yeah, I know! I really wish that people would never use hyperbole to describe anything. It's best to take every single word or phrase in the English language literally, so that everything you read or write appears to have been penned by the North Korean Department Of Communicatory Discipline. If only the Music City Miracle had been renamed the Music City Questionable Lateral That Became A Game-Winning Touchdown. God, it just SINGS!

I think the real reason Greggggg is mad that anyone referred to Tebow's win in sacred terms (and really, he's using a straw man argument here—ost of the written coverage after the win took great pains to point out how ****** Tebow looked for most of the game) is because only Greggggg is fit to judge whether or not YOUR GOD ought to be invoked. Remember, Easterbrook once wrote the following in a football column:

Attend worship services of any faith or denomination. You have obligations to your Maker and your fellow men and women; it's best not to lose sight of that.

I could copy that passage in here every week, it's just that putrid. Best you worship God and worship God precisely as Gregg sees fit. To do otherwise would be a LITERAL abomination. By the way, as Gregg was railing against the idea that Tebow won the game himself ...

Football is a team game. Tebow didn't launch the onside kick or recover the onside kick. He didn't block for himself on the try that forced overtime. He was just one of many Broncos on the field...

... he also pointed out this stat (noted by reader Ben):

"Stats of the Week No. 5: Since 2006, Tennessee is 30-17 with Vince Young at quarterback, 18-23 with anyone else."

"Because, of course," Ben says, "Vince Young won those games for the Titans." He would have if he had been undrafted!

You'd have to read Easterbrook or Magary regularly to get all of the jokes, but I tend to agree with Drew. He has basically ruined Easterbrook for me. I can't read TMQ anymore, except I do skip to the "Cosmic Thought of the Week" and read that.

I'm no sports reporter critic so my opinion is null but I would like to see a legit challenge done in the taste of sports again. espn(notice small caps) has really gone bad-its like its made for 15 year olds.

As much as I loved the Peter King reference you bestowed upon me last week, I don't think I'll check out the Easterbrook one. I like Easterbrook and don't want to sour on him. Peter King, however, makes me wanna go all Ike Turner on a bunch of disabled-refugee-destitute-nuns. I can't stand the guy so will gladly peruse the weekly takedown of him on kissingsuzykolber!

I hear you. Easterbrook is a bright guy, and an educated guy, which is rare among modern sports columnists. I read him for years, but I eventually I found him a little preachy so I kind of just stopped reading it. Wasn't even a conscious thing; just gradually moved away. Magary is my dude anyway, and his Easterbrook stuff made me laugh (especially calling him Gregggggg - haha).

Yeah- I like the Gregggggg part! I know what you mean about the preachy part-- I've begun skipping over his concussion rants...which, unfortunately, he writes about WAY too much nowadays.

I stick with him though because as an Economist and an outsider, he provides a unique and insightful prognosis of football. I love that he's not a traditional journalist (whatever that means nowadays), so he doesn't try to protect certain coaches or players. I think he actually has some integrity and isn't worried about disrupting his meal-ticket interviewees like so many pitiful, pice-of-sh!t "journalists" do.
