I don't know the details Joe doesn't want to discuss but his son was a walk-on. A walk-on who left school to get some playing time in "the minors" which didn't help. Then he returned to ND, got a little PT and still wasn't good enough.

I've never heard of an athlete leaving ND "to work on his game" and then coming back. If his name had been Pat Dillingham would he have been able to "take time off" and return to UND?

At Div 1aa Montana, Nate appears to be 2nd or 3rd string from the stats. He's got 1 rush for 6 yds, passing he's 16-27 for 199 yds, 1 TD, 1 Int. Johnson has 186 passing attempts so I assume he's the starter and Kemp has thrown 11 passes. Johnson and Kemp have played in all 7 games while Nate has played in 5.

When Joe was a freshman he was buried at 7th on the depth chart. When he got on the field he was hot and cold. When he was hot there were none better when he was cold, it was stone cold. Despite the great finishes he had he was a career 52% passer. His inconsistency drove Devine nuts. It was until Joe got to SF that he "found" consistency. His own career should have shown him when you get on the field you to perform to stay there. You have to beat the other guys out. Nate didn't. And unlike Joe's era the NCAA only allows 20 hours of practice time a week. The 5th or 6 string guy (see Mulvey) doesn't get to take Second Team snaps in practice, much less First Team Game Time.

Sorry it didn't work out.

Joe is one of my all-time favorite players, but I hear he's become kind of an arrogant old dude. He knows his son is average in football at best.. He lives out here in Northern California and I'm forever hearing stories about him being a jerk to people. Everyone says he has a VERY high opinion of himself. Sad.

Damn, let me know to never say anything bad about ND. I'll get called a terrible person. lol

I honestly don't know Joe at all let alone to enough to label him an awful person.

As for the article, I don't know what he could be referring to as the treatment his son got.

i have never met anyone who has met the guy to say he was nice....you don't see Golic bitching about his kids pt time...he knows he only got in because of his name and name alone...should of been happy for his son to be receiving an ND degree but instead enjoy the Montana degree...oh and not to mention his drunk driving charge about a month ago

Unfortunately, i HAVE had the displeasure of meeting the idol of my youth on several occasions and he was a total pr!ck every time.

What are the facts? Obviously something must have happened.

I have met Montana at Steve Clarksons QB camp and he was very affable.

I knew his daughter socially and had a few friends who roomed with her during college. They always said he was a really nice guy and his daughter was a sweet girl. We don't know the whole story, so it's tough to call him crazy or back him up for his statements. As far as a guy not being at his best when a fan comes up to introduce himself... I'm not surprised by that either. Give the guy a break.

So what!! There are plenty of examples out there where the kids of great athletes and sucessful business people don't have the ability or the drive to match up with their parents expectations or acomplishments..........

LMFAO!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!!
That is the funniest thing I've ever read.
Poor old Joe is mad at ND for his kid sucking? Nice...really classy.
The kid was always terrible...I was scared anytime he was anywhere near the field...then he goes in against Michigan and proved just how bad he was and why he didn't deserve to see the field.
This isn't the first time Joe has said something stupid about ND...he tends to do it a lot.I'm glad I'm not one of the people that like him, because honestly he didn't do much at ND.

As far as former players being coaches, I would love to see Golic help out in some form...I just love that guy!

There's always a lot of hurt feelings over kids and playing time. What do you think Dayne Crist's parents think of ND right now? Every coach I ever played for had half the team hating them, and why? Because they weren't playing. There is no good way to "handle" a situation when a kid has no chance to play, except to be honest with them.

Love, and agree with, so much of this. Montana was a great QB, but much better in the NFL, where he made his legend.

Definitely didn't read anywhere that he complained about his son's playing time. I'm starting to get the feeling that as a player, I wouldn't like Kelly.

Wow. I mean, Montana is wrong here. But as far as you not liking him: **** you. And the Steelers, while I'm at it. Cannot wait for Sunday. Nothing makes me happier than Steeler tears.

/OK, had to get that out of my system

It was a pretty short snippit from Joe in the article, I'd like to hear the whole story. Didn't Lou also get after Nate Montana in a Blue/Gold game over his inconsistency? Maybe I'm thinking of Sharpley.

What happened to his son? He got a chance to play on a team he NEVER should have gotten on? Give me a break, and I really could care less what he thinks. I just want to win.

Listen, Kelly isn't for everyone. But if you like being challenged and thrive on it, Kelly is for you. Not every player likes to be and I think he inherited a lot of those guys. That' why things aren't going exactly like we/he wants right now. Kelly knows what it takes to win. He needs guys that respond well to him. This will come with time. You can already see he has a bunch of guys like that in his recruiting class of last year. Lots of guys love to compete and want to be challenged. Look at the ''swagg'' that some of the 2012 recruits have. Those are the Kelly guys. Things are looking up fellas. Be patient.

My dad's beer league softball team had Montana on it for a tournament once in the 80s. Dad always maintains that Montana fit right in and was one of the fellas.

From my end, he almost made me want to buy a pair of Skechers Shape-Ups, so his affability is not in question. Well played, Montana. Well played.

He won a National Championship!!! He engineered the come from behind Cotton Bowl (chicken soup) game. He was stupendous at ND. He's still the greatest quarterback in the history of the game. Count the rings. Count the Super Bowl MVP's.

I think I understand what you are saying. I think you are saying that it would not be all warm and fuzzy, sitting by a campfire and singing koom-bye-ya (I have no idea how to spell that so I went with what I had). In that instance, no, I, as an 18 to 22 year old would not always like the atmosphere. However, Coach Kelly is there to do his best to bring this program back to prominence. His style is coarse. His methods tough. His results so far, pretty good. Is Notre Dame where we, the fans, want it to be? Of course not. But it sure beats where we had fallen. The athletes on this team are some of the brightest young minds in the world. The ones that were there know, while his methods are different, they will produce. The athletes he is bringing aboard are coming in knowing his ways and are going all in. I do not know Joe. I have read both good and bad on him. He is a father first. I respect him for that. I am just guessing, but probably Nate didn't like the harshness Coach Kelly directs at his Qb's. Nate probably felt picked on because NO ONE had ever talked to him like that. He, like most other kids, called dad when he was upset. All dads know the truth gets stretched a little when our kids are trying to get a little "sugar tit" (a Mississippi saying for sympathy) from the folks. If that was the case, I think Joe gave a very respectful answer. He didn't blast ND. He simply said it wasn't a good time. How could he jump at the idea of joining ND when lil Nate is still sniffling. Just my two cents. Not worth much as I am currently on a Morphine drip. (I was doing honey-do's last week & fell off the ladder. Had spinal fusion a few months ago & it broke everything in my lower back. Luckily it knocked me out, so I didn't move. I woke up last night to find out that we lost Saturday night. Oh yeah, and that there is a chance of some paralysis.)

Well, I live in Montana and have a relative coaching at Montana. First, Nate Montana is third string. Second, Nate Montana was charged with DUI on his second day on campus. Third, Nate Montana, from what I hear from kids from my town at UM, is an entitled, self-important little pric*.
So Joe is mad that his spoiled kid, who is riding his coat tails, didn't get a shot at starting QB job at ND when he isn't good enough to start at FCS Montana?
Coupled with his remarks about Rudy from a few years ago, I am starting to realize that Joe is:
A. Not an ND Man (no offense Michigan Men)
B. Is an a$$hole
C. Produced kids that are trying but are utterly incapable of living up to his reputation. The one at UW was supposed to be the man, right? Isn't he a sophomore riding the pine behind a sophomore?

Let's just say Nate Montana wasn't exactly a great representative of the University of Notre Dame. I have nothing against him being a walk-on because of his dad, he was a legend. But he had an absolutely atrocious attitude, was cocky, and a spoiled brat. And yes, this is from personal interaction.

He likely hated your less-than-masculine screen name. That's enough to send any "man" over the ledge in my opinion. Should have gone with DogChow.
