Maine South's Alviti a hot commodity - Chicago High School Blog - ESPN Chicago

Matt Alviti wasn’t even sure he was going to be Maine South’s starting quarterback a summer ago.

A year later, Alviti’s life has changed.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Alviti won the quarterbacking job in the fall as a sophomore, led the Hawks to their third consecutive state championship and has already impressed college coaches enough to be offered four Division I scholarships to date, including a recent one from Notre Dame.

“It has come quicker than I thought,” Alviti said on Saturday.

Alviti has also drawn offers from Illinois, Indiana and Northwestern. Northwestern was the first to offer him, and Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald did so the day after Maine South won the Class 8A state championship in November.

“I can’t really tell you how it felt,” Alviti said. “To win state, and the next day receive a Division I scholarship, I’m at a loss for words.”

Illinois coach Ron Zook pulled the trigger shortly later.

“It’s a little surprising going into his junior year,” Maine South coach David Inserra said of all the offers. “I think everything has sped up immensely. That’s one of the things the coaches said in recruiting in the spring. They just say everything has sped up from five years ago. Unfortunately, it’s probably followed the basketball route where they feel they have to offer earlier and earlier.”

Where some players may be a risk to offer so early, Inserra doesn’t think Alviti falls in that category. As a sophomore, he completed 183-of-281 passes for 3,064 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 577 yards and 12 touchdowns. In the 8A championship game, he was 16 of 21 for 224 yards and one touchdown.

What especially has impressed Inserra is Alviti’s knowledge for the game, and that he expects is only going to grow.

“He’s extremely intelligent, but he’s only a sophomore,” Inserra said. “I can’t imagine what he’ll be like when he’s a senior. His mechanics, arm strength and footwork are what separate himself. He already gets it. He’s won a state championship for us.”

Alviti and the Hawks will be the likely favorite to win a fourth consecutive championship in the upcoming season. The Hawks return a plethora talent on both sides of the ball.

“We’re looking for another state title run,” Alviti said. “There’s always pressure at Maine South, especially when you win three in a row. But you can’t take that with you. You have to play every game like it’s your last. Everyone is coming for you. We know we have that pressure.”

As for recruiting, Alviti doesn’t see any pressure in that for now. He plans on completing his junior season before he starts to make a decision. Right now, he said he did favor Northwestern and Notre Dame because of their future quarterback situations.

“Everywhere is a special place that I get offered from,” Alviti said. “I just want the opportunity to play college football. It doesn’t really matter where I go. Any place is going to be a good school.”

Whoa, easy tough guy, these threads were merged. I must have missed the esteemed MJ's snarky response a few weeks ago.

Keepin' my eye on you, hoss.

Check out the play at 1:05. He slows his stride to get in proper position for a block, and within about half a second (1:12) he accelerates to full speed (which is clearly faster than his RB) and connects with a great block.

Crazy athleticism.

Good article up on ISD about him. Interested to see if he gets any taller/faster. Has ~50 yard arm strength as a sophomore. Pretty crazy upside if he keeps developing and I love that he is a local kid. Sounds like he might be our first 2013 commit. Wonder if he has a "star cap" with his 6' height.

Fwiw, I like him a lot better than that Shane Morris kid Michigan is getting... that guy seemed like a total douche on TV and in interviews I've heard.

Wondering if Everett Golson has one, as well?

I've stated many times that Alviti is my favorite QB prospect for next year's class. Think Golson with more straight-line speed. Tough to really evaluate his passing skills, as the vast majority of the throws he's making on tape are deep balls.

I'd love to land this kid, have him sit behind Golson/Hendrix, learn the offense, and develop physically.

Alviti just made a ridiculous 40 yard throw on 2nd & 30. Called the WR down at the half yard line. Game is worth watching if you're bored.

Ended up with 5 total touchdowns (4 pass, 1 rush).

14/26 for 195 yards, 4 TDs
8 carries, 36 yards, TD

Last year, he completed 65% of his throws for 3,066 yards, 24 TD, 7 INT, while adding another 577 on the ground with 12 TDs.

Seems faster than Golson on his highlight tape. Has great accuracy and solid arm strength. I want him.

Watching the full game last night, I don't think he is faster than Golson. Nor does he seems to have the same arm strength. He does do a lot of things really well though and throws an accurate ball. I really want him.

Golson had highlights full of great runs against elite competition. I really loved the one play where Golson juked Lateek Townsend out of his shoes.

Northwestern and Notre Dame probably. I am not sure on this but this is what i am being told. Hes the only QB in this 2013 class that the staff has offered so that is saying a lot cause there our a ton of studs out there. The staff thinks very highly of him. He goes to Main South High school which is a powerhouse and there offense is almost the same as Brian Kelly runs at Notre Dame. Kelly loves what he showed at the camp up here when he came to visit. Main South runs the same offense in like middle school and pop warner so he has mastered that offense. My dad went to Main South so he was telling me lots of story's. Lots of connections to that program and Matt is ours to lose. Would love to get this kid.

spoke to a guy who is supposedly close to Alviti(not sure if I believe him). But anyway he told me that Alviti does not have ND or Northwestern in his top, which was total news to me (again not sure if I believe him). He actually mentioned that Alviti had interest in Alabama, which shocked me cuz I never heard of that. Anyone else hear that?

I dont know what your talking about. There was an interview on Irishsports daily who says he has a top 2 of Northwestern and ND. Wants to stay close to home and play in the spread. Carry on with your nonsense though. Dont believe that guy.
