Sorry there is an ad, but its about 7 minutes of stuff. I thought it was pretty good. Wasn't sure where to put this, so mods feel free to move if you deem it necessary (as always).

I wonder how many people have ever heard those words to the opening song.

Mayock:

"They're a better team than people realize"

"They're not as deep as they'd like to be, particularly on offense."

"Notre Dame has an NFL front seven."

"Three playermakers on offense, Floyd, Wood, Riddick"

"Winning 10 or 11 games is manageable."

"Brian Kelly's class last year is the best group of defensive guys I've seen."

Some highlights:

- ND is better than people think (even taking into account the pre-season buzz).

- ND's front seven looks like an NFL front seven.

- Thinks the Irish are a little thin at the skill positions on offense, but not many college teams can put three playmakers on the field the caliber of Floyd, Riddick and Cierre Wood.

- Thinks their schedule sets up for 10-11 wins if they stay healthy and focused.

- Floyd has first round grades at this point from most NFL teams. Can go in 2nd half of first round if he is healthy, productive and stays out of trouble.

- [Florio: "they have a bunch of guys on defense that can play at the next level."]

- If Te'o comes out he will be a "significant player in the draft."

- Harrison Smith flew under the radar but can flat out play and should be a 2nd round pick.

- "Key for ND, not just this year but going forward, they recruited a group of front seven players . . . that look like a group of NFL defensive linemen and linebackers today." Potential to be first round picks.

- Lynch will play significant snaps.

- "Kelly's recruiting class last year is the best looking group of defensive line recruits I've seen."

Best thing I take away from that: Our Front 7 looks like an NFL front 7.

that is something worth bragging about

I dont think I have ever been so excited to see a defense take the field....

not that my expectations are high or anything(lol), but I really believe the Defense is going to dominate USF; for me, what Mayock says about the defense only strengthens that belief.

Mayock is awesome! For the first time in I don't know how long I'm excited about the defense....

Maybe I missed something, but that guy interviewing Mayock is a jackass!

That guy is Florio. He is a weaselly little man. And he is shocked - SHOCKED! - and appalled that you do not know who he is. [He runs the website ProFootballTalk, and therefore considers himself very important.]

Obviously some networks and analysts have to say certain things to make a segment better than it normally would be, espn and Herpie, cough. When I listen to Urban Meyer and Mike Mayock talk about the team, Mark May kind of came around and hell, Herpie did say he gives us 5 wins but our schedule is so hard to predict he can't pick a win amount, I wonder how good we really are. I feel like when it comes to Mayock and Urban, they are telling the honest truth that they feel about ND this year. Then you have the other "experts" say 8-5, Champs bowl, Fiesta, so on and so forth. I get lost on who is really telling their true feelings against who is telling what the network wants broadcast.

I am kind of ramblin' (DONT KNOCK IT!) but I guess what I am asking is, who do you guys think has no bias with ND and is honestly saying ND can be huge this year? Mayock made a bold, several, statements but managed to throw in the depth. Which I do understand. That makes me think he really would have liked to say he would be shocked if ND doesn't win 10 or 11 if they keep the main 22 healthy. Who should I really listen to??

Urban...once he left Florida, he was talking about an old girlfriend he could have married...his words about the defense were probably 85% what he saw, and a little pick me up for a lost love.

Mayock...Loooong before he was in the booth for NBC doing ND games, he was THE guy for evaluating individual talent...not sure how he is evaluating entire units, but I'd guess pretty good. Also keep in mind, as crazy as it makes me...NBC REALLY tries hard to project an impartial image when it comes to ND...it makes me nuts, but I don't think Mayock is being told to say anything by either ND or NBC...Mayocks words about this team...95% what he sees...he also knows to try and attract viewers, so maybe a little fluff.

May...He's on my list of people to slap in the face on site...that said, he's mostly been on the money with us...Grrrr. If he is luke warm, there might be cause for concern. On the other hand, he just can't abandon the now famous, or infamous Schtick he and Lou have going...May's words about this team...70% what he sees, the rest are to ensure he and Lou can keep it going in the booth.

Herbie...He is still wounded that ND nation turned on him so badly when he started the High School defense garbage...He is still trying to undermine this team, and the fan base, and will for the foreseeable future...Herbie's words about this team...25% what he sees.

I'd say listen to Mayock...period. He has the credibility, and his overall reputation to protect. Again it is neither NBC's or ND's way to pressure these guys to do anything but call the game they are watching...and I'd venture to guess if someone like Mayock were viewed as being too "promotional" they'd get reeled back in...in this case, how can you question Mayock. He isn't going to "promote", he is speaking based on analysis...he sees something he likes.

There I rambled too...like the question you brought...

The goods on Mayock is that is is not biased in any way and gives you details like an NFL scout. He knows and has done the research or camps visits. Unlike other people right now that are grabbing straws. So according to Mayock the talent is available and its up to the players and luck of non injury on offense. I'll roll with that and stand by my 9-3 this year with the wild card being a bowl win no matter who they play. Those young guys by Jan will be blooded. Next year baby look out. The train is coming.

I absolutely love Mayock. For me his word is gospel as far as talent eval goes. I'm glad he's giving two thumbs up.

I freaking love Mayock, even though he went to Boston College. I hope is calling Notre Dame games for decades. I never really thought Pat Haden and the tranny were that bad, but listening Mayock's words, which drip with wisdom, is just such an upgrade.

I thought it was really interesting that he projects Harrison Smith as a second round pick as I have previously never heard anything related smith to the draft so I was curious where he projected and how other people now precieve him since he has emerged

Most of these guys are saying what they believe. That's because it takes more work to make up a false persona. Desmond Howard or David Pollock, for instance, would not want to put in the extra time like real professionals like Brian Jones, Aaron Taylor, Mayock, and, yes, even Kirk Herbstreit do [this list of true pros could actually be quite long]. You can always tell the pros from the cruisers by lack of errors in names, and second and third level information, plus speed of coherent responses.

The issue then is who of these pros is not only honest at what he's doing but a competent evaluator who lacks bias [remembering that bias need not be conscious]?? Most of the "pros" are pretty good, because their work ethic gives them real knowledge rather than superficial bias-filtered knowledge. I've found that only a few of them can't shake the old prejudices. Some SEC guys or a spectacular case like Craig James are like that. Mark May is the opposite: he is just fine once given the opportunity to study the situation. He will keep the Mark/Lou "game" going of course, because it's fun.

The reason that some of us are slow to appreciate all the unbiased professionals is that these guys themselves come in two large categories: enthusiasts who trust their projections without having seen it on the field yet, and conservatives who want to be shown the successful product before they join the Kool-Aid picnic. We have the same two groups of guys here on IE. A Doug Flutie wants to get fired up and join the party. A Kirk Herbstreit wants us to prove it --- so does Mark May --- so does Aaron Taylor for that matter.

There's no way to "get the Truth" until we go out and demonstrate the Truth. All the pros can tell us is how their best guess looks prior to the action, and game-time teams are usually not exactly the same as practice field individuals.
