After starting to play guitar I learned to like SRV more, I just can't stand his voice, his outfits, really his face too. Just something about him grates me.

I would say Page is my favorite, and I think he needs a lot more consideration as the best, whatever people want that to mean.

I'm not sure there's been someone with the blend of skill/melody/variety/sound/appeal/popularity quite like him.

B.B. King

Not my favorite song by B.B., but I love the guitar in this version.

Also agree with all of this. I can respect SRV's ability as a guitarist, but I'm not a big fan of his music generally. There is something to be said for using your talents as a musician to make good music. To me, saying SRV is the best guitarist of all time is like saying Nolan Ryan is the best pitcher of all time (and some do say that, too). In baseball parlance, both SRV and Ryan had nasty stuff, but "stuff" isn't the only criteria.

Most of this list... John Butler did a version of Ocean in Syndey that was mind blowing also...

but I'm usually old school... since the mid 80's music in general has just gotten worse and worse...

I'll take Clapton, King and Hendrix above most

Great posts evryone! Many fantastic players named.
I feel the urge to offer up Alex Lifeson! Wow!
Saw Bonamassa live twice! Total beast, and if you like guitar, you need to see him if you have the chance. Same with Kenny Wayne Sheppard.
Love SRV of course!
Stood 15 feet away from Tremonti with Alterbridge a few weeks ago. Sweet!!!!

IMO Hendrix is pretty overrated.

Blasphemer...and from a guitar player nonetheless /gasp

the solo at 1:18 is godly

<iframe width="420" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Rezb626N_iE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

it might be easy to say that Hendrix is overrated nowadays. Kinda like ppl can say Eddie Van Halen is overrated. Thats because EVERYONE copies what they did, what they trailblazed; it didnt exist before they did it. Were ppl doing Hammer-on solos before EVH? not really. It can be easy to forget that. Nowadays for a guitar player to shred a solo it isnt a big deal because its common place, but it wasnt common place when Hendrix did it. (nowadays 14 years olds on youtube shred guitar solos - it came from Hendrix, EVH, RRhoades) Hendrix' distortion and wahpedal may have been used by other players at the time, but not like how Hendrix used it. Players to this day still use distortion, and a wah pedal and most of this is because the Hendrix influence. Take Kirk Hammett from Metallica, he makes no bones about his use, or overuse as some ppl would say, of his hendrix-influenced wah pedal. What Hendrix(and bands like LeD ZePpLiN, the Stones, Sabbath) did back in the late 60's and 70's is corner stone of all rock music today and that piggy backed from Bebop, and 50's rock and roll.

The thing with Jimi Hendrix was he was much more than just a 'shredder', underneath was a soulful, blues oriented musician. Alot of that is lost nowadays and its just shred-city with todays music (not all, but most). If Jimi Hendrix didnt he do what he did, then the EVH's and Randy Rhoades' of the world would not have done what they did and rock/popular music today would be different because of it.

From all this distortion and wah pedal talk, take the song the Wind cries mary....here we have a 'shredder' playing a beautiful song that doesnt shred, no distortion, and has what I think is one of the best melodic solos(less notes, more feel) in popular music. Nowadays ppl just write shredders(fast, alot of notes, less feel) and ballads; its not quite the same as the original.

A rare cat will come along, and grab onto greatness and for me it links them to the greatest musicians in the past. SRV is a guy I did not appreciate until long after he was gone. But he got the hendrix thing, prolly better than anyone (including Clapton).

SRV is the only modern player(besides Clapton) to play hendrix tunes, and NO ONE ever had a bad thing to say about it.

Here is SRV playing a 'beautiful' hendrix tune to perfection:

Oh I love Hendrix
But to call him a G.O.A.T. isn't something I will ever do.
SRV did an amazing job covering Hendrix...on some occasions he made them sound better.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd does Hendrix covers as well...so has Jonny Lang before he went all R&B Gospelly on us.

I love Hendrix, I really do. But I have alot of other guys who I prefer over him.

Best player? No...
INCREDIBLY Influential...YES

Being the best and being the most influential are two different things entirely.
I maintain to this day that the best guitarist in the world is an 83 year old black guy sitting in a barn in Georgia don't amazing things on a pre war Gibson jumbo acoustic.

In that train of thought...Robert Johnson is definitely in my top 5.

Oh and Albert King is AMAZING too.

Oooooh fun thought....I'm not a big Zakk Wylde fan these days...I was when I went through my heavy A$$ metal phase...Dimebag's murder kind of took the life out of that phase for me...I prefer Rhoads for Ozzy stuff 9 of 10 times.

but
The guitar solo in "Road to Nowhere" is phenomenal.

Also...any Machinehead fans?
Robb Flynn is a pretty sick player, as are the many lead guys who have played with him...I love the riffage and brutal crunchiness. They are really the only modern heavy band I can stand anymore.

MY GOD, I think my brain just died...I forgot to mention a guy in my all time top 3 on this thread!

Allen Collins

I share his last name proudly...
I will state that I love the first few Lynyrd Skynyrd albums. After 77 when he was injured and left the band they went to crap. "Every Mother's Son" is a must listen for anyone who hasn't heard it...

I also saw that I forgot Jerry Cantrell.

I would kiill to be part of a jam like this...I'd just play my J45 and sing with Carl...Carl Perkins...George Harrison...Eric Clapton...Ringo with the tambo...

Sounds like a heavenly night to me! Good whiskey and good jamming.
