If we pick up a solid athlete (Theo Riddick type) to play the slot, ND could have the most dominating group of wide receivers/tight ends in the country in two years. Bringing in DaVaris Daniels and George Atkinson (still think he stays at WR) last year, and Ferguson and Greenberry this year, all ND is lacking is an explosive change of pace slot receiver.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Deontay continue to climb the ESPN150 rankings but a fifth star is most likely out of reach.

I agree, a Tate like receiver would make it a well rounded group

Ian Thomas. Fingers crossed.

Ian Thomas. Fingers crossed.

Forgive me for not loving the 'under-the-radar guy', but why Ian Thomas? I can't find anything that says he's beyong a 3-star guy, or, a top-50 WR. Am I missing something? I feel like there's a lot of the summer left, not to mention a potentially incredible season to be crossing my fingers for Ian Thomas.

I'll explain in the Ian Thomas thread.

Gridiron Kings: Day 1

Deontay Greenberry, WR/DB, Fresno (Calif.) Washington Union

If rankings were based solely off of events like these, Greenberry would be a five-star. He’s dominated every time we’ve seen him in this setting on both sides of the ball. Once again, making tough (sometimes ridiculous) catches at wide receiver and coming up with huge momentum-shifting interceptions were a trademark of his performance. It’s hard to not rave about a prospect that just loves to compete at a high level. If this spring/summer is any indication, Notre Dame is getting a great football player/competitor

Wow i knew this kid was good. But from every report we have had in this thread just says how much this kid just dominates every event he goes too.

From ISD:
Deontay Greenberry doesn’t see what the big deal is with fellow Notre Dame commitment Ronald Darby taking visits to other schools.

“I’m not worried about him at all,” Greenberry said of Darby following the first practice of the Champions Gridiron Kings at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex here. “We’re for sure going to Notre Dame.”

Greenberry, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver from Fresno, Calif., joined his cousin Tee Shepard and Darby on the Irish commitment list in May. He plans on checking out other schools as well, but not in search of something better.

“Me and Tee, we’re taking all of our visits too,” said Greenberry. “That’s just us going out there and trying to explore something new. It doesn’t mean we’re going somewhere else. We’re still going to Notre Dame.”

Greenberry and Shepard will be in South Bend on an official visit when the Irish play USC in October. The duo also plans to make stops at Alabama, Miami, Arizona and Oregon this fall, but the cousins maintain they’ll end up at Notre Dame and they’re trying to bring others with them.

“We’re always doing that,” Greenberry said of recruiting other prospects at showcase events. “We’re always making small comments like, ‘You’ve got to come join the Bang Bang Notre Dame Gang.’”

California wide receiver Bryce Treggs is on Greenberry's West squad for the Gridiron Kings. Treggs committed to California at The Opening earlier this month, but will also be at Notre Dame on an official for the USC game.

“I’m still trying to get Bryce up out there,” Greenberry said. “Tee and Ronald, they’ve got their guys that they're trying to get.”

California safety Shaq Thompson is another recruit Greenberry is trying to convince to join the Irish. Thompson, who will also be at the Notre Dame-USC game, was supposed to participate in this weekend’s event, but a leg injury prevented him from making the trip.

Thompson’s absence has expanded the workload for Greenberry.

“I’m playing linebacker, free safety, corner and receiver,” laughed Greenberry. “I’ve probably got the most jobs out here.

“That just tells me they’re trying to win because I can play everything.”

That’s a lot of responsibility for a player who was a last-minute addition to the Gridiron Kings’ West roster after a strong performance at The Opening.

“I wasn’t even invited after first, but after I went to Oregon and got Offensive MVP, I guess they had to find a way to get me in,” said Greenberry.

Greenberry’s performance at The Opening and on the 7-on-7 circuit this summer has made him one of the hottest prospects in the country and he’s enjoyed the attention that has come along with it.

“I guess that’s what it is, just me blowing up in 7-on-7, just showing what I can do and getting jump balls,” he said. “I was born with that confidence. I’m just coming out here and competing with the best of the best.”

Greenberry is especially excited to be playing with and against the best in Shepard, Darby and fellow Notre Dame verbal C.J. Prosise, a safety from Virginia.

“It’s good because Ronald and C.J., they didn’t go to The Opening,” said Greenberry. “I’m just getting to know them a little bit better here and I got to bond with them a little bit more.”

Notre Dame football: Irish recruting in need of strong finish - southbendtribune.com
Bob Wienke SBT
7/24/11

Which player out of the 12 current verbal commitments can help quickest in 2012?
"I would say Greenberry. He's tall. He's fast. He's a downfield threat, and he's the type of guy in a spread offense that I think can do a lot of damage. And wide receiver is probably the easiest position for someone to come in and make an impact right away. You don't need to learn a significant amount of routes. You can sort of dumb it down for a freshman at wide receiver moreso than any other position.

..

"So I would say Greenberry would be the guy -- in this class right now. They could get somebody down the stretch that could be even more ready, but right now it's Greenberry."

“@JNewbergESPN: ND commit Deontay Greenberry looks like a great pickup for Irish. Kid has size speed and ball skills.”

With Greenberry dominating the edge, am I the only one salivating over the ifea of having Treggs in our slot position? I hope the USC game is as epic as I think it will be.

i'm salivating over getting mahone and one of the marshalls...if we can't run the ball that makes the receivers job much harder.

Breaking down the West team from the Gridiron Kings - ESPN
Greg Biggins

Greenberry was a sub at the Gridiron Camp and it was tough for the other teams with him playing linebacker. Athletically, he's an incredible talent and overall, was the best player for the West. He covered the opposing running back, and did a great job. He also saw time at receiver and is such a physical mismatch because of his size but more so his physicality.

I love that he is absolutely tearing it up at all of these camps. This kid is going to be awesome in blue and gold. I have heard nothing but praise on his performances. So glad we got him.

Perhaps I put too much weight on these 7ON tourneys, but there's not a single recruit in the country I would trade Greenberry for (looking at you, DGB).

Is there any better predictor of success at the next level than dominance against the best recruits in the nation? I think not. And Greenberry has done this 5-6 times, so it's not a fluke.

He's the closest thing to proven bada$$ you'll find, and he's ours. I love it.

To be honest, 7 on 7 is not a perfect translation for real game play. WRs and CBs are the only two positions that come close to perfect translations.

That being said, anyone who dominates at every single competition they step into against elite competition like Tay-B has done is going to be good (to say the least).

That's a good point; but since Greenberry has primarily played WR and DB at these events, it doesn't really change the way I feel about it.

That's quite a stretch. DBG is 6'6", 220, runs a 4.4 and is a consensus 5-star and a lot of people's #1 recruit. He's been called Randy Moss... only better. Not to mention he seems incredibly humble. He's a once in a liftetime type of talent. Give DG credit where credit is due, but let's not get crazy.

Espn, how has him as the #3 player in the country, compares him to a mix between Julio Jones and Calvin Johnson. He's the best WR, but DB is definately making a name for himself.

bottom line is you have to be an athlete to dominate the talent who attend these nationally acclaimed 7 on 7s and by every account i've read that's exactly what he and mr. tee have been doing, which translates to good news for us!!!

i would imagine if darby would be playing as much as these guys he'd be doing the same.

I love DG but to say he's better than DGB is pretty bias. But the fact that we're even talking about this is saying something about DG. He's a stud.

With how quite he's been in recruiting and how he has to deal with his brother's health on the side, I'd say DGB is a RKG too. If he committed to ND we'd be raving about it.

Never said DGB wouldn't be an RKG.

I didn't say he's better than DGB. We haven't seen them head-to-head, so there's no way to know that.

Greenberry is a proven baller, though, and DGB isn't. That's why I wouldn't trade Greenberry for DGB at this point. I realize I'm probably in the minority here, but I put great stock in players who have proven they can perform against Division I talent.
