rivals' analysts said he's a sure 4 star

Here is an interesting concept: Rivals and the other services are starting to rate ND recruits higher as soon as Kelly& Co. sign them. Wouldn't it be just another example of how fraught with irony life can be if the services have to start rating Kelly's Heroes high just so they don't miss a team full of "over-achieving three stars?"

They definitely see potential in this guy and i think you're right...the fourth star is just covering their butt cuz i think they know what this guy is capable of. Safer to put him as a four star than 3 star.

Star ratings have to be part legit, part accident [of the guy even coming to the attention of the service], and part sociology [i.e. the raters know that they cannot study every worthy athlete closely enough to give a quality rating].

They remind me of a professional librarian I know who is asked to review hundreds of books. He can't really read and evaluate them all, so he wizzes it. Some of the recommendations are based on actually reading the book; some are based on skimming it; some are based on reading other people's reaction to it; some are based on the reputation of who wrote it. When you and I read the reviews, we don't know what any one of them is really based upon.

High school football is a gigantic activity. No organization can comprehend the details of it nor the players. So of course the raters are cutting corners. One "corner" to cut is whether you trust the coaching staff who just offered the kid.

What is perhaps interesting ,then, about the ratings is how the different ones see the "studs". [and even moreso the "near-studs"]. They ALL will have heard about these guys and know that their business requires them to make a more serious evaluation of them --- or they're "out" as a service or even an entertainment-generating business. So several different evaluators will have taken a reasonably close look at the big fish. What they say about them should have a little credibility there at least.

This is what I am saying, if you look at the highschool kids that play football from one year as a volume of water, you would get enough to fill a fairly nice pool. To extend that same analogy, those that later make it to the pro's, about a tablespoon. So the social wire burns for the evaluation services, just like you said, OMM. What I think is funny is how the connection from Kelly's evaluations started as two tin cans and a string (when everyone doubted his abilities,) and is now growing to become a trunk line!

Just looking at the kid's pictures he reminds me of Bears OT from the 80's Keith Van Horne for some reason.

up to 6'8 313.

Taylor says with the weight gain he has also gained speed. Sounds like he is getting a lot of coach Longo's job done ahead of time. He is using their record from last year to motivate himslef. Sounds like the team has something to prove.
