Michigan football great Desmond Howard thinks it's time his No. 21, Charles Woodson's No. 2 are retired

“I believe it’s time, without a shadow of a doubt,” the former wide receiver and kick returner said. “It’s just a huge honor. For what I do, traveling around (as an ESPN analyst), I see a lot of players at other schools with jerseys retired who have not accomplished what Woodson and I have."

He noted his accomplishments are greater than those of some players with statues and retired jerseys, yet “who have done less” than him

Pretty arrogant statements.

When I die, I'm hoping my Social Security Number will be retired.

What a D-bag. How about giving future Skunkbears the thrill of wearing your number, taking them under your scrawny wing and mentoring them on how to turn 3 memorable plays into a hack career with ESPN.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's not possible to agree with you more. To think so is insane. As a Redskins/Notre Dame fan, I hate this guy. He played for Michigan, won a Heisman because he was the first one to do the pose, flamed out with the Redskins, and had one play in the NFL that won him a Super Bowl MVP. Where's Dexter Jackson's retired number?

The fact that his name never gets brought up as biggest draft bust bothers me, just because he had that ONE play in the NFL.

He won the Heisman because he racked up 1,859 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns, monstrous numbers for a wide receiver in 1991.

He had over 10,000 yards in kick and punt returns, which is why his name is excluded.

+1

People who doubt how good the guy was are ignorant. You don't win a Heisman without being a stud.

I do think Woodson's number should be retired. Even still, he is a beast.

In other news Tate Forcier says UM should erect a statue in honor of all his accomplishments at the university.

Desmond Howard was taken way too high as a kick returner to not be considered a bust. Devin Hester is/was lightyears better and was taken one round later in a draft. The fact that anyone is defending any scUM grad is baffling to me lol.

To beat out who...Steve Emtman? Overrated. Call me ignorant.

Bullseye. The Early 90's was the poo-Era for Heisman winners. The late 90's was the best era for guys getting Heisman votes. Made the Early 90's look terrible.

Don't belittle the Heisman. They guy won it over thousands of other college football players. The Heisman as we all know is not indicative of NFL success. Frankly you should recognize these guys if they have won these awards. While his comments reek of ego, I think its true to some extent.

Hey it's your call.

Ty Detmer the winner the year before, for one. Detmer threw for over 4000 yds and 3 dozen TDs. Not too shabby.

There was a kid named Faulk who had a better year with 1400 yds and 2 dozen TDs but was only a freshman.

The guy who would have won the Heisman in '91 left ND early to go play in the CFL. Ismail finished second to Detmer the year before.

We lost some great players early to the NFL, which probably caused us to miss two NCs (Bettis, Todd Light, Rocket to name a few).
I hate the NFL.

I don't know about Howard for retiring a number. Seems kinda borderline. Charles Woodson should definitely have his number retired though.

Does Michigan retire numbers? That would be like Tim Brown saying 81 should be retired. Sure it should based on his greatness but it won't.

Yeah they do, I looked it up and only 5 numbers have been retired for 7 players (three were brothers that wore the same number). None played after the 50's, so it is highly unlikey Howard gets his number retired. Unless he does major campaigning.

I played against Detmer (BYU) in 1990...he won the Heisman that year. Then the following year 1991 I played against Faulk (SDSU). Both guys were legit.

The only place I would retire Howard's number to is my toilet bowl so I can have the pleasure of shitting on it every morning.

In all honesty he should have his number retired if Michigan still does it... I don't like him on CFB live, don't like Michigan... but just for the pose alone he should get that honor... one of the defining moments in cfb history and one of the most famous, if not the most famous moment/play in Michigan history... then you add that to his actual career...

without question when you take an objective stance.

with that said, Ann Arbor is still nothing but a whore
