I'm concerned more on our side of the ball than USF's....

I agree, particularly if Dayne starts and has that dumb, confused look on his face trying to still figure out Kelly's offense. i have lost all faith in dayne, sorry.

i think the dumb confused look you refer to is from when he got his bell rung against michigan.

He looked pretty good in last year's opener against Purdue.

yes but never progressed and then got hurt. i don't want to beat up on Dayne b/c he's an awesome leader and the ultimate team guy. i trust kelly to play the right man and i would hope dayne has grown from his time in rehab. at least we have options unlike year's past.

I am hopeful that Dayne will be much better this year assuming he can stay healthy. Last year was all about learning the systems that BK and staff was installing and at times it was almost a painful learning experience for many. I'm thinking (hopeful anyways), that DC has firmly grasped the offense and is ready to shine.

I don't get the Dayne hate. I get that we won all of Rees's starts, and that is certainly to Tommy's credit. But, Dayne and Tommy had virtually the same completion percentage, Dayne averaged more yards/attempt, had a better TD/INT ratio, and took better care of the football (7 INT's in 9 games vs. Tommy's 8 INT's in 4 games), and Tommy seemed to have been playing with a condensed (and less aggressive) version of the offense. And, even though Dayne is older than Tommy, they had the same amount of time in the system and basically the same amount of college football game-experience.

Also, even though Tommy's record as a "starter" was 4-0, he played virtually the whole Tulsa game. And despite the fact that that may have been his best game statistically (334 yds., 4 TD's), he still had 3 INT's, including the terrible throw that cost them the game (even if you disagree with the play call, you can't excuse the throw or the decision to make it into double coverage). So, I think it is a little unfair to point to Tommy's "undefeated" record as a reason you're more comfortable with him than Dayne. It isn't Dayne's fault the defense didn't start playing until he went down for the year.

I am getting ****ing aggervated as sh!t reading this.

Can someone relate this to the Nevada thread, '09?

Or Purdue '10?

This will be a blowout win.

And this Dayne trashing: For God sakes, I only noticed that confused look against Michigan. If Dayne stays in the ballgame, healthy, we win hands down. Kyle Rudolph was even gimpy, and he still had a 92 yard reception.

COME ON!

My only concern is what multiplier we are going to ring the spread up by. Money in the bank.

You're using two myths that are basically not true.

1. Crist looked confused and lost

2. He didn't progress

The first is utter nonsense really.

Secondly, I'm not sure how to deal with he "didn't progress" theory. He threw for 205 yards and 1 TD against Purdue, then a couple games later was the team's best offensive player with a scorching 369 yards and 4 TD's against MSU. That's not progress?

Was he supposed to increase his numbers and accolades in every single game?

I get that we would like to see our QB be better at the end of the year than in the beginning, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way. The truth is, our highly touted first-year starter was playing at a relatively high level for most of the year in a new system.

He had ups and downs in every game. Let's just admit that since the Navy game was his worst, people are using the lazy argument that he didn't progress.

Figures we play two of 'em.

I just hope they realize their potential and play well all year long. There is nothing worse than a team with the potential to be really good that is wildly inconsistent. They could beat you with their best game of the year and then finish 6-6 with some ugly losses and therefore your loss to them really hurts the perception of your team. On the other hand, if we handle each of them but they roll through the rest of the schedule and finish in the 9-3, 10-2 range, those two wins could help with perceptions of our season, as well as with the computers.

I don't think seeing two of those teams on our schedule is necessarily a bad thing, but it is a little scary.

given the state of the program over the last 10-13 years....I never think "ND will blow these guys out", or "ND will win by X number of points." This harsh reality has been painfully burned into me over the last decade or so. Its a very different mindset then in the early 90's when I would see NorthWestern in week 1, and think "ND is going to drop 40+ on those guys."

I will be happy with a win, while showing signs of progression. At the end of the game, i want to be excited about the direction the team is headed. so without putting a point spread, or expectation on certain statistical categories, I just want to see the team win, and progress....and most important, NO INJURIES!!!!!

needless to say, if they come out and play like they did against (opening day) San Diego St a few years ago, saying I would be disappointed would be an understatement. I mean, they won the game, but did it in very unconvincing, almost limping-across-the-finish-line fashion. After the SDSU game, I was not excited about the team, or the direction they were headed in. that is the exact opposite of where I would like the team to be at the end of the USF game.

Im not worried about USF at all. This is our second year under the new offensive system and we are returning almost everyone from last years offense so everyone will know what they are doing. The offense should be moving fast and scoring often. The front seven on defense will be lights out and the secondary should be decent so Im not worried about the USF offense scoring on us a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if the game is close at halftime, but by the fourth quarter we should be winning comfortably.

Unless we have injuries up the wazzoo, I cannot fathom that degree of ineptitude happening on September 3rd.

Thanks for the link. I agree and in honor of Lou I would like to point out that USF is an amazing team and if we're not on our A game, we will get spanked.

I’m not going to make any predictions on this game, I want to think that we will win, BUT we have that HUGE scUM game that next week, all the “hype” that the players will be listening too . This is just a lot for a team to manage and Kelly will have his hands full keeping these guys focused, which I am confident he can do.
TOO many times I get all excited like I just got to sleep with the girl of my dreams just to wake up afterwards and have an itchy crotch. That’s not gonna happen again, I will just wait and see first.

I agree with the people who don't think there is any chance we overlook this game simply because it is the first game of the season and its at home. Our guys are going to be so pumped to stop hitting each other, and play some football that it won't matter who is out there. If this were game 6, I could see this as a trap game, but not where it is, especially considering people associate Florida schools with solid football and this team beat Clemson in their bowl last year. Both teams will be ready to play.

B.J. Daniels is streaky... if he puts together one of his good games, then this game will be alot closer then anyone thinks.

I'm putting money on him throwing for about 160 yards with 1 td and 2 ints though. Which would'nt even be close to what USF needs to be competitive in this game.
