Somebody else suggested that crude nickname about a year ago, not thinking of the history. In 1924 Notre Dame students broke up a Ku Klux Klan rally in South Bend. The Klan had gathered there to intimidate Catholic's. Also, Aaron's mother advised me that as a biracial man he found the term highly offensive.

It's not about being P.C.; it's about common decency.

Find another nickname.

+1

This is so often confused. More often than not in my experience.

My father, in his young-&-violent days, helped break up another KKK march on Notre Dame in the early thirties. He and his Notre Dame friends acted like "sergeant Yorks", picking off the cloaked goons at the back, and stacking their unconscious bodies up in the side alleys. Their marching line was a lot shorter by the time it had ND in sight.

Dad was not a violent man, actually, but he was a principled one and VERY loyal to Notre Dame. Our defense is "The Beast": that's how we can honor Aaron's original suggestion. I hope that Jarron can join us in that collective monster.

We really ARE "Gunna be Beast!!"

Oh, and bearing the long line is far and away preferable to baring it.

Just as long as we don't have to bare it, I'm cool!

Hey it seems as though ND has to weather some protest or marches every 10-20 years or so, other than the war years. I have a friend who has a few years on you guys. (OMM and dshans) and it seems to me he has told me about his class standing shoulder to shoulder with each other in the 50's. My friend was first generation but most of his g2 classmate's fathers sound like they were involved with your dad's!

Hey, by the way, I was just thinking. This whole thing about lynching, this is an education process. There are a whole lot of people who are unaware of the history you bring up. Our history books sure sweep it under the rug! Many do think it of the old west context exclusively, let's give them a chance to catch up.

Here is the probable, American origin of the word, another bit of history swept under the rug:
In the United States, the origin of the terms lynching and lynch law is traditionally attributed to a Virginia Quaker named Charles Lynch.

Charles Lynch (1736–1796), a Virginia planter and American Revolutionary who headed a county court in Virginia which punished Loyalist supporters of the British.

That was me. After having discussing it and having thought about it I immediately deleted my post. It really is a terrible nickname even without the history of Our Lady...add that and it just compounds it.

Since then there have been 2 other suggestions of using that same name for our D. I handled some opposition via PM. Needless to say, that name won't stick. Not around here.

Aaron loves the Beast reference, so let's work that in for us.

Go Irish!

It is about common decency.

I want to make a very public, very clear statement that there are places where we shouldn't go, no matter the "who," "where," "when" or "why."

'Nuff said. End of discussion. Step away and move on.

It's not about being P.C.; it's about common decency.

Find another nickname.

I don't have anything to add to these two points, other than to ask that people think about what they are posting before they click the "submit" button.

This board is generally one of the best boards I've read in terms of posters demonstrating tact and having substantive discussions, so I hate to see the kind of thing we are discussing here. As BGIF said, it isn't about political correctness, its about common decency. Its also about not being ignorant of or insensitive about some of the terrible things we have had to endure as a country.

Another regular poster who is generally an asset to the board made a joke a few days ago that I thought was in poor taste, although it was not as offensive as this remark. I hope this isn't the start of a trend. I'm sorry for the rant; I am not trying to be the arbiter of appropriateness here, but there are some places where I would rather this board not go.

I'll say this. We all make mistakes on what to joke about, or atleast I know I do. There's no need to get mad at someone who suggests the idea so long as they get that it won't be accepted. Especially seeing as it offends the kid the idea was based off of.

As serious as I'm not, once you actually offend someone, it goes from a joke to an insult. And we can't have that.

Now, back to the topic at hand:

Linebacker-U.com :: NY DT Jarron Jones Decommits From Penn State

A couple of snippets from the blog:

"You can’t blame Jones for wanting to make the best possible decision for himself. He’s a young man choosing an option that will impact him for the rest of his life."

"This one will be a battle for the coaches, who now have to fight against the increasingly annoying Brian Kelly for Jones’ service."

New poster here. Started following Irish Envy when Kelly took over the reigns. I've been hooked ever since. ISD and IE are my go to spots for my Irish recruiting fix.

With regards to Jarron Jones, it sure is good news to hear about the PSU decommit. Would love to see the Irish land a big guy like Jones to play DT.

Welcome aboard.

He reminds me of Tuitt. I bet he's being recruited for SDE.

1) Welcome to the fun house. Enjoy yourself.
2) Listen, learn, lay back and chime in as you see fit. 25% of what's posted here is worth the pixels expended.
3) Weather the storms. Keep in mind that there are some wise-asses or aging hippies who like to tell stories.
4) There are some (no names) who might pound you for confusing "reigns" with "reins."
(Though a case could be made that BK took over both the reins as well as the reign of Irish football.)
5) As always, heed the advice of Lewis Carroll and "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!"
6) Cut me some slack, Jack.

Back to Jones. Reading reports saying he is closer to 6'4 than his listed 6'6/6'7.

We're probably better off if that is true*. Give our defense more flexibility to have him on the edge or kicked inside for some minutes at nose.

*Assuming he plays at Notre Dame.

Ahh yes, Jarron Jones is 7 feet tall...sacks quarterbacks by the hundreds...and if he were here...he'd consume our rivals with bolts of lightning from his eyes, and fireballs from his arse....I AM JARRON JONES!

No, really I'm not. : (

Can't pass up a good Braveheart reference, regardless of how horridly historically inaccurate the film was.

Anyone else feel like Dame is leading for Jones?

Since Jarron seems to be very interested in ND now, I wonder what pressure that puts on Day. They are very similar and probably play the same position, no?

They supposedly both project as SDE/ DT swing men, but in my estimation, Day is more a 0- and 3-tech guy, while Jones is a 5- and 3-tech guy. I don't think they'll be competing much for playing time if they both verbal.
