College football preseason top 120: A closer look after a busy offseason - NCAA Football - Sporting News

Preseason rankings are like dialogue on Baywatch—you need them to keep the show going, but they don’t mean anything to anyone except nerds.

ND and '11 Opponents
4. SU
14. MSU
15. ND
25. USC
32. USF
35. UMD
36. PIT
40. UM
43. BC
45. PU
50. AF
70. USNA
85. WF

TSN's Top 120 gives ND and "average opponent" of 39.9 or Michigan. I believe they will tougher than our fans think they will be. I don't seem them as being comparable to PU. Likewise I think USC is better than #25.

This schedule is runnable (if we have a Starting QB as opposed to 4 guys who could start).

Best quote in the lineup, Purdue K Carson Wiggs:

The Boilermakers are healthy and hungry this year, and we are going to eat!

Yeah, eat $hit!

A kicker!

The scary part? 10 out of 12 teams are in the top 50. Sheesh.

Who asked you Rocket!!??

Just saying, yo. With our tough schedule, staying in the top 20 in the major defensive categories will be super tough, if only because it's not like 1989 anymore where all the other teams are playing tough schedules too.

Alabama alone will sky rocket up the defensive charts with two games against North Texas and Georgia Southern. They'll give up 220 yards and 6 points in their "easy" games.

Meanwhile, we'll probably play great defensively against Wake Forest and BC and still give up 500+ yards and 30 points or so.

We could easily have a top 20 defense by one of the advanced metrics; Football Outsiders' Adjusted Points Allowed Per Game for instance.

The "vanilla" statistics compiled by the NCAA don't mean much anymore for the very reason you described. Any stat that doesn't at least attempt to account for the quality of opponent is pretty worthless.

That is true.

Although we're about another 20 years away from the general public understanding those and people on TV and during the games using them as comparisons in the current matchup.
