40 speed is great for after the catch. Field awareness is a bit mo' better, even if you have to jog, in order to get open. From what I have read, maybe that is Bennett's problem, trying to use his speed to get open. Have any of you tried to run a route and catch a ball while running full speed with coverage around you? Hard to do. The time to use your speed is after the catch.

Agreed...most routes require you create space at the right time...I've said it before...internal clock, ability to change direction w/o a "tell", sell the setup...overall shiftiness is what I call it.

Granted you need to be in the neighborhood of 4.5-4.7, otherwise protection breaks down before you "get there", and your QB gets killed...but alot of guys fall in that range.

Just to comment on the importance of a 40 time:

In high school i was 6'3, 245 and ran a 4.8 40. I played TE/H-back. Wasn't the fastest or quickest...but I could GET OPEN. That's the key. It's about reading coverages and finding space. You can be fast as lightning, but that speed may just run you right into another zone that's covered. Gotta know when to sit and gotta know when to keep drifting. As far as one-on-one, use your body and get physical learn your cuts and run precise routes.

Smarts over speed. Speed is nice, but a guy that can get open is so much more valuable.

I think you're wrong on Dieter. He'll be in 4.4s by his senior season. He has great size and is tough over the middle. Saying he is just run of the mill MAC talent is a great disrespect to that young man. I'm going to guess that recruiting websites will disagree with you by mid way through his senior season too.

Wasn't his choice lol. And ya, I haven't seen much on Rice, but Gehrig seems legit. Worst-case scenario it seems like he'll end up in the Big 10 or Big East.

I can't believe neither of the wide receivers from Washington H.S. doesn't have an offer.

A guy named Randy Moss signed his LOI to Notre Dame, got in a fight and put a kid in the hospital, got his scholly pulled, went to FSU, smoked pot and got kicked out...and THEN played in the MAC.

They still wanted him after all that. He was that good lol.

How this thread got hijacked to become s discussion of Randy Moss I know not.

He was/is a gifted athlete. He was/is a wastoid when it comes to his personality and personal life.

He coulda been a Cal Ripkin, Jr. but remains an asterisk.

Holtz wanted his athleticism as did Bobby Bowden. Holtz was overridden by clearer heads. Bowden's hand was forced by Moss's behavior.

The man had a few good years with the Vikings and then the Patriots, but his character, in spite of straightened and bleached teeth, took center stage.

I only hope that he didn't completely squander the millions of dollars tossed his way.

I agree with your assessment of Randy Moss. I believe I read an article on Randy that he hasn't "squander" his millions of dollars. Randy is a simple guy from West Virginia, who loves living the simple life and fish. His passion in life isn't football or basketball, but being on his own and fishing. I believe he has lived well within his means and is actually a miss understood person. All the mistakes he has made during his career, he is still a no doubt HOF.

Now back to Tony Rice Jr. As I said earlier in the thread, if we offered Jake Golic we should offer Tony Rice Jr.

This staff didn't offer Jake Golic, but I see your point. Unfortunately, I don't see lil Rice getting the nod.

I don't see Golic ever seeing the field at TE and have been very disappointed for years the old staff caved and gave a sympathy scholarship for whatever reason.

Im not disrespecting Dieter or Rice my high school coach at Mishawaka Marian who coaches Rice and scouts and plays against Dieter said that they were not major BCS level talent I understand that they are from the area but I played against Daniel Smith who was getting recruited by bigger name schools than Dieter and he played in a pro offense in high school that was terrible and he still put up huge numbers and dominated they both look like talented players but if Kelly and staff thought they were good enough he would have and will give them the scholarships... Rice is not fast or big enough to be a top talent at the college level though he has great ball skills and leaping ability and Dieter has a nak for the ball and is big enough but we will see

Also Rice could be getting bigger because apparently he has been in the weight room a lot and went to a local combine and learned how far he really is

If we don't want to give him a scholarship we could maybe get him as a preferred walk -on. That would be cool to have little Tony and little Barry.

That was one sentence. I held my breath throughout the whole thing, then collapsed at the end.

We already have preferred walk-ons who've earned that status through their performance; not because of their last names.

I understand the appeal of having Tony Rice's son associated with the program, but the implication that he ought to be offered anything based on that relationship alone rubs me the wrong way. I hope for his own sake that Rice, Jr. agrees with me.

Wrong! Moss was involved in a fight allegedly over a racial slur but that wasn't the issue.

Back in those days ND didn't offer scholarships until after Admissions gave their blessing. ND frequently "lost" out on talented but academically challenged recruits as ND Admissions required 4 more core courses than the minimum required by the NCAA then. Lots of recruits had to pack both of their senior semesters heavily with core courses AND get good grades in them to be approved by ND Admissions. Many of those recruits were interested in waiting for ND (or doing the extra work that UM, USC, OSU, and over 95% of Division 1schools did NOT require. ND academic requirements made it tough. ND Admission's approval process ( schedule) made it tougher. IF Rooney didn't sign off there was NO scholarship.

Neither WR Randy Moss nor a Blue Chip RB announced as signees in the same class were ever APPROVED by ND Admissions. Lou tried to slide both of them past Admissions at the "13th hour" and lost. It was an integral part of his demise as ND's football coach.

I handled recruiting on the Irish Recruiting Journal back in those days and wrote an article on it. The primary source was a member of the football staff.

Where were you back then, Kindergarten? Second Grade?

Yeah that is a good point just that Rice is my all time favorite so i guess im a little biased. Is he getting any offers from like the MAC??
