How come all these guys who I'm really hoping to be a NT we have a good shot at are being recruited at DE? :(

Because they are all 6'4", 275 lbs. types, not 6'0", 330 lbs.

No kid needs to weigh 330 at 6' in high school. 6'4" at 275 says to me that he probably has the frame to add the 30 more pounds of bulk.

My point isn't really about height. It is a totally different body type. If you are built like a bowling ball you probably qualify, whether you are 5'11" or 6'4". Haloti Ngata is a little taller at 6'4"; Vince Wilfork, BJ Raji and Casey Hampton are all 6'2" and under.

But my point was more about shape than height. I should have probably made that more clear.

Maybe it's not quite obvious yet where he might play on the D-Line. After a Rivals "camp" in April, their analyst said: "Watkins came into the event battling Jonathan Bullard for the boasting rights of the top defensive lineman in the state but it is clear that they are different types of linemen. While Bullard looks more like a big end, Watkins is purely a defensive tackle and a very good one at that. Watkins is a very powerful rusher who uses his physical stature to dominate opponents. At times he flashed quickness to the outside and he has a couple of nice moves including a violent rip, but he's more of a bulldozer right now. His build, his power and his ability to play with leverage make him an ideal 4-3 defensive tackle or even a nose tackle in a 3-4."

Watkins also plays basketball, and although his team isn't very good [maybe a 50/50 W/L type team and worse in league], he himself averages 22ppg and 11rebounds per game. That says a little something about athleticism ... and he gets two steals per game as well.

Agreed

Pat Williams 6'3"
Haloti Ngata 6'4"
Vince Wilfolk 6'2"
Shaun Rogers 6'4"

How is Vince Wilfork, at 6'2", closer to 6'4" than 6'0''? And also Casey Hampton and BJ Raji, who I also mentioned, are also not closer to 6'4" than 6'0".

But, to clarify again, none of those guys are 275. My point was not about height, but shape. I should have made that more clear in my first post.

Howie Long, called himself an oversized bridge troll? I think that is right. The point is (as a rule) the DE's have long thighs and legs with narrower pelvises and broader shoulders. NT's have broader builds floor to shoulder, more barrel chested builds, and shorter thighs as a rule.

I agree it is about shape more than height (generally speaking).

In the quote I posted the critical comment was that he plays with great leverage. That's the salient point to all this size/shape business. And "pounds" can take care of themselves from age 17-20.

I hope that we can meet tomorrow. See you there. :D

...what?

Also, welcome aboard, but an odd first post. Do you think Terry is visiting June 16th? Or are you saying "you" in reference to the recruit?

ESPN Insider

ESPNU 150 DT Carlos Watkins stacks offers - ESPN

In high school, the only positions Watkins hasn't played is QB and DB.
Junior Yr. --- 50 tackles, 14 sacks, 29 TFL
Says he needs to work on his pass rushing (sounds like a good PR wit 14 sacks)
Says he is more of a run stopper.

"Right now I am still open," Watkins said. "I know this summer I want to see Notre Dame, Florida, Miami [camp], Alabama and Auburn. I have been to Clemson, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, so I have a pretty good idea what's out there."

"Playing time is important and I want to feel comfortable, like I am part of a family," Watkins said. "I don't want to take too long to make a decision and I am hoping to do something this fall. I will try and get to as many schools as I can this summer. I know I will likely have to take some official visits as well."

Per ESPN, 5 he "mentions most" are South Carolina, Clemson, ND, Florida and Miami. Grew up a Miami fan, but loves home cooking. 2 SC schools probably lead, but we are in it.
