Regarding whether or not this would change the staff's current recruiting goals for O-linemen: only if they were thinking of getting five in this class to continue to make up for the small Lombard class. Typical goals for O-Lines are four per year, or sixteen on a roster. The O-line allows a bit more flexibility than some positions because the players often have inherent flexibility to shift positions, and coaching staffs like to really emphasize the Iron-Five fingers of the Mailed Fist in games [which is why we see less substituting there in real games]. That said, and taking into account the staff's attempt to heal the 2010 gap with shifting Heggie and considering Hounshell as an O-line possibility, I'll bet that they have breathed a sigh of relief and settled happily on a target of a "normal" four. If more super-studs suddenly wanted in, and other areas were "OK", then sure, we'd take five ... but I'll bet no way we want to stop at three.

"On another note, after getting Aaron Lynch into school and perhaps taking Prestwood with all of his spring grades, Notre Dame needs to be considered a serious football school again."

Love seeing this from a rival.

That was meant to be an insult implying that we've lowered academic standards.

Take a look in the comments:

"I really don’t like Notre Dame, but to be perfectly honest…. I hope this is true. It is important for the entire sport of college football for Notre Dame to at least be RELEVANT… I’d hate to see more MNC’s going their way, but having them in the discussion is good….

One thing that really sets college football apart is “tradition”… and like it or not, Notre Dame has it".

It's distain, but it's respectful distain.

Well some of them have class, for the others....

im all for "traditional powers" but frankly with the perks ND gets just for being who they are, i hope they suck from now till eternity..
Yep....me too All their damn spoiled fans can suck it. ND is the team that I hate right behind Florida. And I would rather Florida be relevant than ND. It is too much fun watching thier fans whine.

me also F*ck the Irish

Michigan or Penn State I am more interested in them getting back to prominence. At least you woudl know they earned their way back into the mix. They don’t have the ‘College Ball Gods’ putting a finger on the scale in their favor.

(1) While the poster obviously made it up (about Prestwood's being driven out), if any team has the right to be delusional about recruiting right now its FSU. Things are getting crazy down there. That dragon is waking up. However, the idea that ND is favored oveer SEC schools with their billion dollar contract is absurd.

(2) As far as the coaching staff goes, I think we lose Molnar to a smaller school after this year. That opens up the OC position. Warnier could stay and take it, or move on. if he stays Alford could become the pass or run game cordinator. If he leaves, Alford could become a co-offensive coordinator. On the defensive side I think Diaco stays at least this year and next. When he leaves Martin steps in as DC.

(3) I am not as worried about coaching defections because I think Coach Kelly hires like he recruits: he wants system guys/teachers and not schemers/big names.

Someone said that JP put up a pic of him on the field a ND stadium 10 hours ago on facebook. Looks like now it's just a matter of paperwork.

It's a necessary evil....you have to have a great staff to be successful...but when you do become successful other schools notice and want your crop. I'm biased but if I was a high up coach on the staff at ND I wouldn't care to leave. I'm making 300k plus and I don't have the microscope on me. Look at Auburn's OC...was offered $3 million/yr to coach Vanderbilt (yeah it's vandy but still)...he said no and stayed at Auburn...they in return bumped his salary up from $500/yr to $1.3 million/yr. It's nice to have your own team (HC) but if I'm making that much money then it's all about being happy and I would be happy staying at ND where good things happen and are going to happen....biased I know but that's my opinion on that.

Regarding the assistant coaches: Beamer keeps his at VT. It's possible. One move he's made more than once has been to deny himself raises but insist upon assistants getting significant ones. Admittedly Beamer is of demi-god-like stature there, and the admin doubtless REALLY doesn't want to deny him stuff which will go public, but that doesn't mean that, if we have success, Kelly can't pull it off here.

Honestly, if our assistant coaches are looking for a prime HC job, they are going to wait until after this team has accomplished something.

ND assistant jobs are under the spotlight, and I think these guys want a notch or two under their belt at ND before they take off.

Two comments, one was an intriguing thought. The other is just funny.

This is definitely not good for us. If you believe that we are on the cusp of national championship runs, the you don’t want ND to be “relevant” or good. With the schedule they play or schedule they can make if they choose, if they are any good they can get to the NC game. And because only 2 teams can be in that game, if one is ND and the other comes from the SEC (as it will for some time), FSU is left out in the cold. Not what we want, regardless of “tradition” in college sports.

Maybe he has a penchant for 200 lb, fish-belly white chicks.
That’s what I saw when I was in South Bend…

If Florida remains a top SEC team and FSU beats Florida and runs the table in the ACC, they could get in line for the NC game ahead of a SEC team. I continue to be baffled by fans of other teams and media members referring to ND's schedule as being soft. I don't have the hard numbers in front of me, but I'm willing to bet ND plays as many, if not more, games against BCS conference teams than anyone in the country.

This is the point I was trying to make a few pages back. Should have used less words. This sums it up nicely.

our schedule is always ranked well ... the large majority of teams we play end up in bowl games.

I hope not that would be tampering. I'll give them credit for planting a seed last year that struggled with the environment and took a few more months to germinate.

I didn't word it correctly. I meant Coach Alford deserves all the credit in the world in a general sense (not for Prestwood transferring), as he's been killing it on the recruiting trail for a while now, as opposed to Diaco's one year. To insinuate that Alford has been taking lessons from Diaco diminishes what Alford has been doing for ND for several years...

This will use a 2012 scholly?

He will be on scholarship starting this fall. He will be treated as a member of the 2011 recruiting class in all respects, except that he will not be eligible to play this season because he enrolled at FSU and transferred to ND. So he has to sit as a transfer, which is basically the same as having a mandatory redshirt.
