Ever see the campus? Or the women? Mix in a top University that isn't ND (an alternative) . . .

I've been there multiple times. The campus is immaculate... were it not for my bias, I might even put it ahead of ND. Love the architecture. The golf course is also UNREAL. Always shocks me that Ty ever left ;)

The women? Worse than the talent at ND. By a lot. When you add up ND girls (which get better every year) with St. Mary's... it's seriously not even close.

And I hear they have pretty crappy facilities and can't even sell out their stadium when they're going 11-1. That's pathetic. ND, objectively, is still miles ahead as an overall football+academics school for most kids. Well, unless you're looking for early PT at OLB and don't want to compete with kids like Ishaq, Ben and Anthony, that is.

Yeah no kidding about the cute girls and the nice campus. Add the fact that the weather isn't nearly as harsh as it is in south bend as well.

Dude, its California.

A smart man never goes after the girls on campus with a business or law program of any sort.

Unless you have a poor GPA...

Stanford

The campus is beautiful the women are smart, brainy and
very much into their studies. Stanford women are 180 degrees
different than those on every other good football campus on
the west coast.

Football players are not idolized that's for sure.

ND is a much more a fun college campus.

It has been a while since I was there but I'll bet white wine outsells beer
10 to 1.

An average of 10,000 empty seats (that's official) on average, even during winning seasons. And no one tells you to sit down, because no one is standing.

The few times that I have been on Stanford's campus was as a visiting professor, and I found it rather "stuffy". Admittedly a prof's viewpoint is probably of little relevance in these matters, but maybe "stuffiness" extends more deeply.

I've attended a number of ND – Stanford games in Palo Alto over the last two decades. I can't speak to the campus (from the point of view of a visiting professor) as being "stuffy" or not, but the antics of the band and those who staged the half time shows were the antithesis of stuffy.

Poorly, if not pathetically conceived and staged in terms of true wit and cognizance, they were lacking. "Stuffy" they were not.

Agreed. College bands are usually certifiable even if their schools are not. [a phrasing with too many dimensions for me to contemplate without getting a headache, so I'll quit there].

Yeah, maybe off-campus you can find attractive women. I grew up in the Bay Area. "Stanford women are dogs" is a common saying. I've also heard that the divide between athletes and the student body there is huge.

There's a strong inverse relationship between a school's admission standards and the attractiveness of its female students.

God giveth with one hand, and taketh away with the other. Perhaps there is justice after all.

Anything new that is at all relevant? Anything?

When there's news, someone will post it. If an off-topic conversation gets out of hand, a mod will move it.

If you're offended by the lack of hard-hitting recruitment info on the last couple pages, feel free to message a mod about it.

In completely-irrelevant news: Whiskey's inverse relationship law must be correct because there is an astounding exception to it. Hedy Lamarr was considered the most beautiful woman in Hollywood AND was a WW2 weapons technology inventor at the same time. God took "two scoops" there into the same lump of clay. We could claim to the recruits that her grand-daughters were going to ND. Well .... we're ALL related SOME way aren't we??

Wow, what do you know? I knew all three good-looking Stanford women! I guess that shows you the power and pitfalls of anecdotal evidence.

I never spent a great amount of time on campus, and it was long ago. Thanks for the update, and info on the athletic programs. The campus and golf course were outstanding. The way I remember the campus it would make the cut of one of my top ten favorite, with UND. Pepperdine, 1, etc. . . .

OMM, (all universities are stuffy). Every campus has an Admin building, U-Hall, etc. Notre Dame is exempt because of the golden dome, but, it just depends on how far from that structure it takes to be able to breathe the air, as to whether it is a “fun”, “okay”, or “stuffy” university.

dshans, Remember the Stanford bands Irish rendition? If I were Kelly, I would have the football team run through their band this year, and cleat as many musicians as they fell down as possible. It is never too late, and that was pure snobbery. God, I just remember how I hate Stanford . . . .

Legitimate questions are welcome. "Anything new???" is not. We have several members who are all over the pay sites and twitter; if there's news, it gets posted immediately.

IrishEnvy is easily the best moderated message board I've ever used. If information is getting posted in the wrong thread or forum, it gets moved by a mod pretty quickly. So there's also no need for passive-aggressive posts about "relevance".

Well I must admit that I've posted something like that before (numerous times really) but only on threads that have sulked to the bottom of the forums. Sometimes our big poster guys just kinda skip over them.

I wouldn't have said anything if I hadn't seen NDinLA post the same sort of reply to "Anything new???" posts several times. Add on the crack about "relevance", and it hit two of my pet peeves.

Yea, I'm sure there have been people who got mad at me about this as well and I just didn't notice. :stickoutt

The guys are pretty good at what they do so I'd expect with a pretty hot forum like this that anything new gets posted immediately.

I can't say that I do. It might have something to do with the Bloody Mary Breakfasts, Martini Matinees and Tailgate Cocktails.

Being somewhat irreverent and unstuffy, I only took umbrage with the cheesy and amateurish nature of the half time presentations.

As for the band: I love it that there are no uniforms but for the red sport coats donated by an alum some years back.

Besides, one of my son's friends (and marching band mates) in high school went to Stanford. He's a great kid and wouldn't deserve cleating. Hmmmm ... I wonder where he is now.

Maybe I should give my son a call now that he and his buds have been out of kolledje for too years and axe.

This is the substance to which I was referring:

Stanford Report, October 15, 1997

Band punished for mocking Notre Dame: 10/97
'Tasteless performance' earns ban for Band

The Stanford Band has been prohibited from performing at football games against the University of Notre Dame until 2000 in the wake of shows at an Oct. 4 intercollegiate match that have been blasted as racist and insulting.

Irish and Catholic groups criticized the maverick band's pre-game and half-time performances, which included a parody of the Irish potato famine and a band member dressed as a Catholic cardinal.

President Gerhard Casper offered Stanford's apologies to Notre Dame. Athletic Director Ted Leland said in a statement issued Oct. 6: "I apologize for the tasteless performance by the Stanford Band at last Saturday's football game with Notre Dame. In their sophomoric attempt at humor, the band crossed the line from funny to obnoxious and offensive."

But band members say that their halftime show, titled, "These Irish, Why Must They Fight?" was misinterpreted, partly because of an unclear fieldshow script. "For this, we apologize," the band said in a long statement posted on its web page. "Its misinterpretation as an assault on the Irish seems obvious in retrospect, but did not occur to any of our censors. We erred in judgment, and we apologize."

The band also said that claims that the scrips referred to the Irish as "stinkin' drunks" were false.

The statement said that the concept behind the show was not to insult Irish people but to ridicule Notre Dame's leprechaun mascot, which the band called racist. "We think it absurd that Notre Dame can claim a whole ethnicity as its mascot, and further characterize this ethnicity as belligerent: the Fighting Irish," the statement read. "Further, to represent the Irish, Notre Dame uses a leprechaun. Most Irish people we know are not, in fact, leprechauns."

The Athletic Department also said it would "revamp its standing procedure to review Band scripts." It had apparently approved the Oct. 4 script, which led to what it later called an "unacceptable show." SR
