Rivals has an update on matthias posted today coincidentally---its a positive post so i assume we have no problems with what is likely to be one of the real sleepers in this class---farley has alot of speed and savy---he is still only two seasons into football but is on a very rapid rise in skill----he will be a surprsingly good recruit.

In the Kelly post-NSD film presscon, he talked of Farley as the most physically-ready [body-maturity-wise] of any of the recruits. Talked of his strength. Sounded a bit like maybe he was thinking Safety as a first thought.

I know that originally he was considered a cornerback, but since he committed he has really developed. I could see him playing safety as well. great size and speed for that position.

Will come in as a WR. Not defensive back.

Really? I would have never expected that.

With him and GA3 moving to offense (so it seems), what's that mean for our recruiting on that side of the ball right now, eh?

Edit: GA3 isn't moving to offense, but from receiver to RB. Still, same concerns on recruiting for both positions though I guess.

Wow...I'm trying to think out what this portends. I believe that Farley was being positioned for safety. If so, the Staff may think we're loaded there [Smith, Motta, Slaughter, McCarthy, Collingsworth, and possibly Hardy] and they'd be right.

It also could mean that the staff is confident about corner [not only the two good old men, but particularly Jackson and the other "kids" --- I'm still not sure how they see Lo Wood]. Maybe this also simplifies the problem of finding as much immediate time on the field for youngsters who will need to take over the next year.

Adding Farley to WR expands the class there to three, and with the threatened move of GAIII to RB we were very slim at WR for last year. I guess the chess-master is still making perfectly good sense.

I'm having trouble understanding this too. We know Fairley was very raw and hasn't played a lot of football. But....

Kelly said he's very physically developed, again seems like he'd fit on defense.

He played (mostly?) defense in high school so that's where his minimal experience is.

And lastly, he seemd to have really good instincts and especially a lot of pop in his tackling as a defender.

Now he's a receiver? Kind of a head scratcher right now. We need a press conference to sort this all out!

Although I believe he was better fitted for corner, I'm not so certain this wasn't part of a recruiting plan for this upcoming season. We all know that Farley is very raw and has the potential to play either side of the ball. If Kelly and Co. can tell the defensive backs that we have one less corner/safety recruit coming in for this season maybe it helps in that aspect. Just my 2 cents.

While he was recruited for defense, he played plenty of offense. His junior year, seemingly every time he touched the ball he was off for a TD. In fact, his first game, his first play he caught a pass and took it 66 yds to the house. His next (and only catch) also went for a TD. He was electric with the ball in his hands. His stats as a jr were 29 catches for 849 yds and 12 TDs. Not bad for a kid who never played football before.

His senior year, his team wasn't nearly as good, but he still caught 30 passes for 600 yds and 10 TDs, and that was with then entire league focused in on him.

So it's not nearly as much of a head-scratcher as you think...

If 1 out of every 3 times he catches the football goes for a TD. I think I can deal with that.

GAIII to RB isn't temporary.

i agree...i never thought of this last week, but it makes perfect sense. Fixes the depth issue at WR with last year's class, although he may not be as dangerous with the ball as GAIII would have been at receiver he definitely seems to have the ability to contribute there. So this means that we could potentially bring in 6 DB recruits??

With safety still pretty full after Smith and McCarthy go [adding, we hope, Baratti and, whenever he's able to get here,Badger], and corner having Jackson, Brown, Wood, JoshA, and maybe Hardy, [plus the young supermen verballed], I sure wouldn't go for six DBs. I know that it looks like tough sledding at RB recruiting, but we need more help there [by two] and even with a terrific athlete like Farley at WR we need to recruit two more there too. Etc.

This move makes sense to me. He is still a very raw talent that the coaches were going to have to mold regardless. He is very explosive and can be shaped into a threat from the slot.

Ahh, thanks for more clarification. I had a feeling he played both ways in high school but couldn't completely remember. Most of the highlights I remember watching were from defense.

It's never bad to have dread locks on offense too!

maybe this indicates we sit well with some more top cb prospects?

I was thinking (and hoping) the same thing, but in all actuality it probably doesn't have anything to do with the 2012 class as it stands today, and everything to do with positioning the team for 2011.

Love this quote:

“Blocking is my favorite thing,” he said. “I would much rather take somebody’s head off on a peel-back block than hitting somebody on defense. I like hitting people on defense too, but you’re supposed to hit somebody hard on defense. On offense, when you come back and make that block to hold the corner off or whatever it is, that gets the crowd going crazy.

Also, it has still not been decided if he will be a slot receiver or outside.

Here is a highlight video that begins with him playing receiver. The first 10 or so plays are go routes but there is some variability after that-

YouTube - ‪Matthias Farley 2009 Charlotte Christian Football Highlights‬‏

He doesn't look to be all that dangerous after the catch, but I submit to my trust in the coaching staff.

Not sure how you can make that statement. Most of the routes were deep routes in that video. I thought he was fine after the catch on short routes and good in the open field on int returns.

Love the blocking comment. Kelly has said that Farley is the most D-1 body-ready newcomer on the team.

That's nearly 30 yards a catch. My God.
