If nothing else, recruiting definitely provides some 'enterjoyment' for us through the otherwise uneventful offseason.

ISD:

Terry Richardson has gone back and forth with his announcement date this week.

First, it was scheduled for Tuesday, but then pushed back to Thursday. On Tuesday night, he said he was postponing it before saying it was back on. The Detroit cornerback from Cass Tech High School said the idea of cancelling Thursday’s press conference has nothing to do with being indecisive and that he just wants to make sure all of his family members will be in attendance.

Irish Sports Daily caught up with the 5-foot-9, 165-pound cornerback for his thoughts on his five finalists - Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, LSU and Alabama.

Richardson took an unofficial visit to Notre Dame just before the Irish’s Junior Day in February with his good friend, James Ross, and came away impressed with the Notre Dame coaches.

“I like the staff,” he said. “I like Coach Chuck Martin, I love Coach Kelly. Those are real good guys, real, real, real good guys. You can’t go wrong with them. I just feel comfortable down there, to be honest.”

Ross eventually committed to Michigan along with one of Richardson’s high school teammates, linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone. The presence of his friends in Ann Arbor could play a major role in his decision.

“You can’t really go wrong with your in-state school,” he said of Michigan. “I’ve got mad love for them. My family is pretty high on Michigan, they’re Michigan supporters. You just can’t go wrong with Michigan.”

Richardson said he grew up liking USC while his other two finalists, LSU and Alabama, were the first to offer him scholarships.

“LSU was one of the first two schools to offer me,” he said. “They saw a lot of promise in me. They’re just a school that I’m really comfortable with.”

The Crimson Tide were Richardson’s first offer.

“I love the staff,” he said. “They used to coach at Michigan State, so they know that Michigan has players. They offered me my first scholarship as a sophomore in July. Nick Saban is a real good coach, highly respected and I’d love to go play for a coach like that.”

Again, as of now, the press conference is still scheduled for Thursday, provided his family can attend.

I wasn't comparing this to the Lynch decision. That would be like apples to oranges to pinneapples to brazilian nuts.

But someone said something to the extent of "I give up on this kid", refering to him changing his mind about his announcement time. I simply pointed out that I think it's better to change your announcement time over and over rather than verbally commit to a team, then switch, then switch back.

We're always happy when the coin lands on our side, I was just saying we can't be bias and make it into a big deal because he can't make up his mind. If he ends up taking a delay because he wanted to reconsider ND, we'll all welcome him with open arms and call him RKG, right?

Lynch also had a crazy final week of recruiting in which he was shown in a ND sweatshirt, then professed his love to FSU, then shot down rumors he was thinking about ND again, then said once again that he was still going to FSU, then said he might take a visit to ND but he was still committed to FSU, then decommitted to FSU, then said he was no longer considering FSU and announced a top 3 of ND, Miami, and Florida, then said he was visiting ND, etc etc etc. And again, all of this happened over one short week.

These kids have a ton of pressure on them, and they (some ND players included) have a hard time making a final decision. One thing that is very difficult for them is that they have to inform so many coaches whim they've grown close to that they are shunning their schools. That's tough to do for a 17 year-old.

So yeah, this seems to be a bit dramatic, but if he's telling the truth and saying it has to do with family, then what are you going to do? If he verballed to ND, I think almost all of us would quickly forgive him and welcome him with open arms. Too bad he's not coming here though...

My whole point is that kids waffle all the time...ND kids included. MOST Notre Dame commits don't play the hat game and they don't do the whole "look at me" routine, but there are several who have committed elsewhere and then flipped to ND, or have committed to ND only to take other visits, go to camps to possibly get other offers, etc etc etc. It happens, you know? They're kids.

He confirmed on his twitter. Was bound to happen. We still have a promising DB line up for next year & have the potential to get a few more awesome players to add to Shepard, Darby & Barrieti.

Not worried about this one.

nor am i...never saw him in blue and gold anyway...now we can wrip on how short he is and how he'll never be able to cover DD and the other studs we're going to have on the outside.

I'm not happy he chose Michigan. I'm not happy if Michigan gets any kid rated higher than 2*'s.... ever...

First sentence, Wooly. I'm with you. The rest; not sure I don't mind beating a better school, with better recruits. What if SC never recovers, what will that rivalry be worth?

Since everybody was busy slamming Richardson, they missed the most important point. What about the recruiting job Brady Hoke, (another Ohio boy) is doing? Or should we launch an investigation into pay to play? I mean from what RichRod did, especially on defense, that's about zero to sixty, in 2.2 seconds!

i'm sure he's heavily selling the chance to play right away to these defensive recruits...and regardless of how much we hate them, Michigan is a decent product to sell to recruits. Good academics, facilities, and tradition.

I'm with you man.. Everything about Michigan pisses me off.. and USC.. It's just an innate reaction and immediate blood boil.

But, besides Michigan getting a solid prospect, Im not concerned about losing out on a DB. We've got two studs and are in the mix for more. I wanna be greedy and have Keith Marshall committ NOW!

I think that there are a number of reasons why we are seeing all of these defensive players committing to Michigan. Early playing time is certainly part of it, but the name Greg Mattison is, I think, the biggest reason for the swing. I live in Ann Arbor right now and a number of my friends are Michigan fans and recruitniks. Word is that Greg Mattison is emphasizing his NFL experience to these kids- much like Charlie Weis did to get us Jimmy Clausen and our other offensive studs.

Let's also not forget that this kid was in-state. Furthermore, the 'we didn't want him anyway' claim is nonsense and sounds like a ridiculous defense mechanism. I am of the mind that if the staff offered, we wanted the player and would have used him. This kid was a burner and whether he ended up playing corner or slot, Kelly would have made use of his talents. Instead, we will be playing against him for the next 4 years. We lost on this one. It's true that we'll find another highly qualified corner, but we still lost to Michigan here.

Oddly enough, I had a nightmare last night that we lost to Michigan (I also got shot, but the loss to Michigan was much more unsettling). I'm not much of one for psychic dreams, but...

Who are the "we" you speak for?

Broad terms....making reference to his size (5'9") going up against our outside skills player (6'2"-6'3"). Sure he is a legit player but now we are going after "better" talent at that position so if we missed on him..sad to miss on good talent but move on and focus on the other prospects that we are going after. The goal is to make him wish he picked another school that doesn't play ND if not ND itself.

I know that height at the corner position is a big thing for Kelly and co. but I think people on this board are starting to emphasize that too much. Clearly this kid is a solid corner and athlete and he must have proven his ability to cover tall receivers or he wouldn't have been offered by so many schools. One glance at his list of offers (USC, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame) tells me enough to know that this kid is exceptional.

Mattison biggest reason??? NFL creds???

Greg Robinson spent 14 years as a DC in the NFL for Jets, Broncos, and Chiefs. He also served as DC for Texas before becoming HC at Syracuse.

Mattison got pushed out at Michigan in 1997 by Jim Hermann. Hermann's defense allowed less than 10 points per game on the way to a National Championship that year.

Richardson's home state and long time relationship had a lot more to do with the choice.

Frankly I don't see the choice that Mattison made. Leaving the NFL as a respected D-coordinator, leaving arguably the meanest defense in the league... Take a DC job at the college level? I could see an HC position, but DC?

Hoke is absolutely killing it, which is why I would like to get a couple victories in the next few years while they are still bad. It is imperative that we win in the next 2-3 years vs UM, because after that it will be a toss up.

Of course this is based on conjecture and if any of these kids will work out etc etc.

There is nothing better than a great rivalry between ND and Mich! Let them recruit, Im excited about it. They will never beat us in recruiting as long as were pulling top notch talent nationally. They will not beat us in terms of recruiting nationally. However, it is in our best interest to have them very good as to increase our strength of schedule and make us look that much better when we beat them. Nd #1 Mich #2 is optimum.

the consensus is that mattison took the job for personal reasons...a member of his family (i think maybe his daughter or grandchild) is having health issues and with Michigan having one of the best hospitals in the country the move seemed to fit.
