Looks like most NFL NTs fall in the 6'2'' - 6'4'' range.

Anyone know why NTs are generally a little shorter? Is it just a leverage/ center of gravity thing?

ol can get under them and block them right out of the play; where as a shorter person is firing straight ahead and clogging holes and even when they are getting blocked most of the time they r getting blocked into the holes...which is a reason i am still in amazement Williams didn't get drafted

he wont be on the OL trust me. ND recruiting him DT.
I'm not saying ND is recruiting as OL just saying where his skills are best utilized and they are not as a NT.

ND is recruiting him DE.

IMO he fits best as a 4-3 DT or as OL but especially at the college level he can dominate as a 3-4 DE.

He would fit on our defense very well, regardless of where he is on the field he's going to be a possible double team with it's at nose or 5 tech.

He is a 3-4, strong-side DE all the way. Can play the 3 Tech in a 4-3 as well. This kid has Richard Seymour painted on his forehead. If I was Diaco i would put him very high on my 2012 DL priority list. (DISCLAIMER: I still think we need to take an impact NT in this class)

He'd be Richard Seymour if he never grew the rest of his life. He's already Seymour's size as a high school junior.

This kid as a 5-tech would be a monster. Slide him inside to DT on a 4-man front on passing downs. I love the Seymour comp. Can definitely see that.

Where do you guys get this idea that people are "too tall" for a position?

I remember last year people saying Springmann was too tall to pay DE
Now Jones is too tall for NT? There is no way that a 6-6 330 (by the time he is playing college) can handle double teams in the middle?

It was a question of mine; not an assertion.

I keep reading that "true" blue-chip NTs are rare, so landing such a recruit would be a big coup for this class. I assumed, based on Jones' massive size, that we'd want him at NT, but all indications are that we're recruiting him to play a 5-tech. Thus, I wondered why Jones doesn't profile as a NT for us.

I basically just want to know who our top NT targets are. We've got quality at DE, so I'm more interested in who the next "Big Lou" is gonna be.

Hard to look for the next "Big Lou" when we haven't seen the original Big Lou.

Isn't Big Lou the only true NT on our roster? I didn't mean the next "Big Lou" from a performance stand point, but as the next true NT.

If I'm completely off-base with this "true" NT thing, please set me straight. I'm under the impression that the other guys (Cwynar, Williams, etc.) who play NT for us are basically converted DTs, which isn't ideal for whatever reason.

taller and leaner guys are better suited for DE as they are able to use their length in space to control the edge.

NT's are a certain body "Type" and sorry Jones doesnt fit into that body "Type"

Think Richard Seymour and Vince Wilfork....They both can play inside and out, but Seymour better suited on the edge and Wilfork better suited on the Nose.

I understand the difference between a DE and DT. I guess I'm having a hard time distinguishing the body types of a DT and NT.

Is a NT just an extraordinarily heavy and athletic DT?

To answer the question asked above...

If you're a looking for a NT pray to your respective deity that we get Schutt. Goldman is a serious reach by Schutt should be the real deal at NT.

That's what I am saying. All I hear is he is too athletic to play NT. Which, again makes no sense to me.

Thanks for the input. At least I know who to get excited about now.

Schutt is 6'3'', 301. Jones is 6'5'', 305. Why does Schutt profile as a NT, but Jones profiles as a DE? Is it because Schutt's shorter/ more compact, while Jones' length is better utilized on the edges? Is there some key difference in strength, speed, or athleticism?

Haven't watched enough tape of either of them tell you the differences in their play style. What I can tell you is that height, length or whatever isn't the end all be all... there are a ton of factors that go into how someone projects on the DL. The position Tuitt was recruited for (and where KLM plays now) is almost a hybrid DT position depending on what kind of front we line up in out of our "3-4" (i.e. what the CAT is doing). This position requires a lot of size and strength... and is why Jarron could potentially be a great fit there.

Then again, I am no expert nor scout.

Hard to follow that last stuff up.

But...my brothers [two of them] were strongside guards. Both of them preferred to block tall nose tackles rather than short compact ones, entirely due to the who can "take the low ground" physics of it all. A tall guy CAN get low, but it's obviously a greater strain on his flexibility [a very flexible big man can still out-leverage you, but it's less likely if you're that flexible too.]

On the other hand, both of them really preferred to block DEs who didn't have long strong arms and knew how to use them. So, physics being what it is, "in general" you'd like "low-built power" in the middle, and "extensible power" more towards the edge. AND THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS to every rule.

My memory of last season's discussion of Springman wasn't that he was too tall for DE [think Ed "too tall" Jones or Bubba Smith or Doug Adkins], but that he did not seem the best body type for NT. The fact that he was an accomplished basketball player seemed encouraging that he might have the speed and maneuverability for DE or the great feet for OT.
