Wish it was ND, but I am happy for him.

"Former Notre Dame and NFL star Lyght joins Oregon staff as intern" | Oregon Football with Rob Moseley | The Register-Guard

Following a 12-year NFL career that included a Super Bowl title, Todd Lyght set out to forge a life after football.

The two-time all-American at Notre Dame worked several years as a radio analyst, then decided to try his hand in business and became co-owner of a national pizzeria chain. More recently, he helped run a restaurant and night club in southern California.

In 2009, the football bug bit again, and Lyght took his first coaching job, as the defensive backs assistant at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas. The 1999 Super Bowl champion and All-Pro for the St. Louis Rams had found his calling.

“Within one week of it,” Lyght said, “I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

After two years at Bishop Gorman that included a 28-2 record and two state titles, Lyght this spring joined the Oregon football staff as a defensive intern. In past years, someone with Lyght’s football background would have been an obvious candidate to be a graduate assistant, a position that allows coaching, and which is currently open at Oregon. However, a recent NCAA rule prevents those positions from going to coaches more than seven years after their undergraduate graduation.

Thus, there are limitations on the duties Lyght, a 1991 first-round pick by the Rams who played 10 years in St. Louis, can perform at Oregon. But for a guy just setting out on his coaching career, working with the Ducks is as much about Lyght’s educational experience as it is what he can bring to the team.

“Chip Kelly and his staff are, I feel, one of the elite staffs in the country,” said Lyght, who finished his NFL career with 37 interceptions. “To come to Oregon and learn about their philosophy, the way they do things, is a great opportunity.”

Good luck to him!

I'm perfectly happy with Notre Dame's current staff, fwiw.

Don't get me wrong, so am I. Very happy. But the homer in me would have love to seen him return to ND to learn the intricacies of coaching and help our secondary.

Also one of my all time favorites. Maybe one day he will be back with the Irish. In the meantime he can help beat SC once again!

Lyght is far and away my number one favorite player to ever strap it on for ND. Good luck to him, but not Oregon, I can't stand them.

I think it is a great idea for him to get his start at one of the nation's top college programs. Adds more diversity to his resume. This way, when he goes to coach at ND, he has learned from multiple top notch coaches at all levels of football.

It's just a matter of time when, once again, Lyght will cheer for Notre Dame. Once a "domer", always a domer.

I'm very excited and happy for him at the same time. I'm also hoping he learns as much as possible from Chip Kelly and others before one day settling in South Bend.

Saw it there....thought I would bump this thread too given the joy I get from reviving topics that are nearly 4 years old.

People, please look at the date this thread was created. #Confusionreigns

This is awesome if true! Be nice to have a former Irish player who gets it on board. I liked Cooks a lot and he did a great job, but this is the kind of move that gets a guy on the trail that can truly sell the experience. Could not be happier with this move!

According to multiple sources, Irish247 has learned that former Notre Dame cornerback and NFL first round draft pick Todd Lyght is expected to return to South Bend on the Irish coaching staff.

Lyght, who played at Notre Dame from 1987-90, was the No. 5 overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1991 NFL Draft. He played 12 years in the league, was the Rams Rookie of the Year, a Pro Bowler in 2000 and was a part of the Rams Super Bowl XXXIV victory over the Tennessee Titans, 23-16.

As a coach, Lyght started coaching in 2009 as an assistant at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman high school. He joined the University of Oregon staff as a defensive assistant in 2011. In 2013, Lyght was named the assistant defensive backs caoch for the Philadelphia Eagles. Following the 2014 season, Lyght was recently hired by Vanderbilt as their cornerbacks coach.

On Feb. 2, Irish247 mentioned him as a potential replacement for Kerry Cooks, who left to coach defensive backs at the University of Oklahoma.

In addition to our report, Lyght was not present during Vanderbilt's Signing Day festivities yesterday.

Update

According to Vandy sources, we're told Lyght was offered the position two days ago and he accepted. We're told this is a "done deal" and Lyght will officially join the staff soon.

Anyone know how he has done on the recruiting trail?
from one foot down but no prior unless he assisted as a GA at oregon
In terms of recruiting this looks to be a home run hire for Notre Dame. Lyght brings instant credibility to living rooms all over the country and could be especially effective in the Los Angeles area where he lived for many years. He'll be 46 in just a couple days so he's not super young but hopefully the energy to become a valued recruiter is waiting to break out as soon as possible.

This is kind of the big question thats be asked all over. Wiltfong and Loy think that his success at every level will help when talking with recruits. Also, Wiltfong believes that him being pretty active on social media will be a good thing and something that relates to the younger generation.

I would take one Todd Lyght for two Kerry Cooks, and I really like Kerry! This is a dynamite hire for Kelly. Completes the circle to the Holtz era, and makes a huge difference for the defense in terms of attitude.

Am surprised that this didn't pull one of the safety prospects, or did they keep it that under wraps?

You have to think that if he's willing to put in the leg work just playing a decade in the NFL at a high level + having a Super Bowl ring + being a 2x consensus All-American means he'll have a great product to sell. He's been through ND first hand and achieved at the highest level and he should be able to communicate that to prospects who are looking to achieve similar things.

Plus it can never hurt to have yet another link to Bishop Gorman.

Instant credibility with recruits, no ifs ands or buts. Look at the resume son. The guy not only knows it and gets it, he's done it!
