i've been very surprised with the scouts take on him recently...i thought he would be rated lower than he has, but i think his athletic ability is really turning into the saver for him and why he is beginning to be rated as high as he is.

if maty comes to ND it will become b/c of his love for the college and/or coach kelly. I can't see anyone with intentions to play right away being attracted to us with our depth chart situation...which would also mean he is not afraid of competition.

Which is the reason why I think he hasn't committed yet. Michigan is probably selling him on their lack of depth (which is bull**** with DRob and Gardner) and Missouri/Illinois are probably saying "come start for us as a Freshman."

I think depth (and posters on this board) are the only thing that can keep him away from ND at this point.

I would not be scared of the depth of Michigan...Robinson is not a pro style QB, he had a rough scrimmage this weekend, and Gardener is still a question...he could definitely compete right away for playing time if he decides to go to Michigan

Missouri has two young and promising quarterbacks in James Franklin and Tyler Gabbert. It's not USC-like circa 2004 with their depth but that's very good talent for the Tigers.

Ok well at one school he has to beat a top 3 QB prospect with two years of experience in hand... at the other school (Notre Dame) he would only have to compete against two top 15ish QBs with no experience.

Just saying that if I was a QB in his shoes I'd be much more concerned about beating out a guy like Gardner that is a physical specimen with more time to learn the offense versus gusy like Golson and Hendrix. Yes, I love Golson and Hendrix as much as the next guy, but speaking ignorantly and objectively from his point of view I don't think you can say that Michigan looks more favorable than ND.

a lot of people are saying Mauk is "arrogant - cocky - bad attitude". But he is still an elite QB. If we land Mauk will that better our chances with other prospects (WR/OL/RB) or will it hurt because some prospects are turned off by his demeanor and don't want to play with him? Or makes no difference?! I'm just curious.

I'm not from the area and I've never read one articel stating Mauk is a bad kid, but on rival message boards they talk about it. I will say this...when asked on Power Hour about kids they have talked to that are "ND kids" (good kids with good attitudes that fit the ND culture), CoachD mentioned Maty Mauk as one.

I would imagine it would at least help with elite WRs who would love a gun slinging QB. Don't really see attitude affecting another recruit. Question is would that keep an elite RB from wanting in?

Not after hearing/watching Cierre tearing up the yardage this upcoming year! There's room and worth for a top notch RB in Kelly's offense, no doubt!

God, I hope so! I really think Wood is going to re-write a couple records these next couple of years!

ISD premium folks:

How'd the drop by visit go? Any updates?

Nothing big, and it doesn't seem like anything is imminent. He has said he wanted to visit Michigan again with his parents, so I think we are going to have to wait until after that before anything really happens one way or another.

Think the staff is going to drop in a quite a few recruits coming up now that spring ball is over.

I may be off on this, but the fact that they just extended a QB offer to Miles seems to have me thinking neither Mauk nor Kiel is remotely close to a "sure thing" or even "probable."

Maybe, or it could be a pressure play on Mauk and / or Kiel to move their timetables up slightly. Not sure anyone knows for sure at this point, but I will say I would be extremely surprised if we did not either.

I'd take Miles, too. Stocking up for the future.

Anyway, back to Mauk.

Keep in mind even if we take only 1 QB this year, it still creates a log jam at that position and could lead to a transfer. If Dayne plays well enough to be a starter, yet not so well as to come out early (which is very reasonable), we have 4 QBs with at least 2 years of eligibility left, with 2 of them having 4 years. Adding a '12 QB will only compound this fact, which is why we won't settle for a QB the staff isn't in love with this cycle. Seems that the staff has really zeroed in on Mauk and Kiel as kids they really like and want this cycle. In the unlikely yet possible event we don't land either, I would not be unopposed to missing this year despite BK's well documented preference for taking 1 a year.

I'd like to get one a year as well.. simply because the following example is possible (I think, lol) if we don't get a QB in this cycle:

Crist starts this year prompting Rees to transfer
Next year, the QBs would be Golson and Hendrix and no frosh
Golson takes the reigns prompting Hendrix to transfer so we would only be left with Golson and no backup..

am I missing anything/anyone? can someone please relay to me when a player can transfer? For example, if after the summer it is very clear that Crist emerges as a starter, can/will Hendrix/Rees transfer before the season begins? I'm very interested in this because I believe at least one will transfer.. these are competitive and talented guys, I doubt both of them settle on being career backups..

Interesting and solid point. Or maybe they have been both humbled yet challenged enough to stick it out and eventually take charge. Certainly a good dilemma
