WTF is he going to Florida for?

I know that sounds a tad harsh, but that's a strange decision.

Good luck to him. Just hope he doesn't get reinjured. I just don't like this

Best of luck to him...I sure hope he doesn't get hurt again...it could be life threatening at this point...I'd hate to see that happen.

If he transfers he has to again reapply for his sixth year and be cleared by Floridas doctors. It's not a done deal he just requested and Kelly said he could transfer wherever he wants.

Here's an article by Eric Hansen, SBT, which explains the questions raised.

Notre Dame football: Wenger eyes transfer to Florida - southbendtribune.com

His football is done at ND and he has an ND degree.

... “In good conscience, we just couldn’t clear him,” Kelly said. “I met with Dan and his family and let them know where we stood. But the young man still wants to play, and I’m not going to stand in the way of that.”

Wenger, a starting center for the Irish in 2008, asked for a release to transfer to the University of Florida. Kelly responded by granting a release to any school. ...

He will have be cleared by the school doctors wherever he transfers. Reapplying to the NCAA for the 6th year by the new school is a paperwork exercise as the NCAA has already ruled on the rationale.

Best wishes for a healthy outcome.

Wow, I just hope this doesn't endanger him in any way. Maybe the ND doctors did it so he'd be off scholarship, maybe Florida is downplaying the severity of his injuries, but something isn't right somewhere.

BK's response seems kind of fishy too I'll be honest... you couldn't in good conscience clear him but you'll let him go elsewhere to get cleared??... idk

Yea that's my point, it negates them having to deal with telling him he's done, and kind of pushing it onto something else, while giving the appearance that they are doing what is in the best interests of the player.

I don't think Kellys motives are as malevolent as you guys are making it out to be. He likely had the discussion with Dan long before now that look, we just can't let you play. With what we are learning about concussions almost daily now, its hard to imagine a coach with integrity saying otherwise.

It makes me feel good about Kelly knowing that he'll say that to a good kid. Young people are irrational most of the time, and I hope Wenger doesn't pay a steep price.

Also, none of this is a guarantee that Florida will even let him play. I think Charlie is of a similar mindset, he won't risk the lives and futures of these kids. It they check him out and think the same thing as the ND doctors have, he won't play there, either.

It could be that Kelly doesn't have a scholarship for Wenger. There are several guys that would have priority as 5th years over him...

Kelly went to bat for Wenger to the NCAA about getting him a 6th year of eligibility so I doubt it was the fact that there were no scholarships or anything else. Last he told me was he got that 6th year and was waiting for the ND doctors to clear him to play. Evidently they didn't. It's not that Kelly didn't want him; he absolutely did.

Danny is a good friend and I wish him all the best. He's another ND grad and player that we all should be proud of. He's truly a class act.

He should put his ND degree to work, and not play anymore. Then again, I should be sober and in bed right now.

Please highlight the fishy part. If I've omitted any essential part of the quote please add it.

... “In good conscience, we just couldn’t clear him,” Kelly said. “I met with Dan and his family and let them know where we stood. But the young man still wants to play, and I’m not going to stand in the way of that.”

"we just couldn't clear him" Sounds definitive.

“I met with Dan and his family and let them know where we stood. ..." Now there's some real conspiracy doubletalk, right? He met boith with the individual, a college graduate, over the age of majority, and omg met with the parents. He had no obligation to meet with the parents, as an educator you know that ACamp.

"... But the young man still wants to play, and I’m not going to stand in the way of that." He's a graduate student with an ND undergraduate degree. ND has met their obligation to educate him. ND lost two OLs in the past year one by death, one by transfer. So they're going to cut loose a healthy OL when it takes 2-3 to develop their bodies and technique? He's a 6th year candidate. Kelly said "Goodbye" to several 5th year candidates this year. It's never a pleasure but at this point in his career he's been doing it for decades.

Dan's a grown man who made his own decision. One, I'll say is foolish. Does Dan have a NFL future? NO.

The head trauma he's taken ain't nothin' like what he'd be getting there. Head trauma is cumulative. He's not going to get Tommy John miracle surgery on his brain. He'll end up like Ali.

So he's wants to lace 'em up and hear the roar of the crowd for another season. We all have to "hang up the spikes" at some point in our lives. Some sooner than most. Going into a bowl game with Powlus injured, the #2 QB Tom Krug had a routine physical which uncovered a latent neck defect he had since birth. The ND doctors told him to stop playing. He didn't have a history of neck injuries but they said stop. The risk is too great. He did.

There have been some awful stupid posts today mostly in the Floyd thread and yes griff your post is one of them. I'm not calling you stupid but the post is.

Since when has ND or one of it's coaches acted like Steve Spurrier or Nick Saban?

Go ahead griff, list them. Your post is not only baseless it's insulting. A newbie would get tossed him for trolling for posting garbage like that.

Unlike Bama, Auburn, or South Carolina Wenger will leave with an degree and it's an ND degree. With that degree he could a job in any state in the county before today. Now a prespective employer might genuinely question his maturity and judgement. Employers like "Can Do Guys" not kamikazes.

Luckily, your opinion is not the end all be all of my existence, so I'll find someway to cope. That's laughable if you think I should be banned for that post. You have no say at all in anyone getting banned, so staying in your lane would probably be the most beneficial. If we are talking bannable offenses, your attack on me would probably merit it quicker than my post.

Did you read my first post where I said one side seems off on this? He isn't fit to play for one university, but is for another. He's had massive head trauma and one end of this equation, Florida or ND doesn't add up. I was merely suggesting a possibility, I did not state anything as fact. Florida may be showing disregard for his health, but ND had motive by removing a scholarship from the books by not denying anyone another year. Florida gets a lineman or ND gets a player removed from scholarship. A doctor has said he shouldn't play football, and while a second opinion is great, something does not add up.

I have no idea where the spiel about the value of an ND degree came from. I never questioned the value alone, or against any of the other schools mentioned. You're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but slogging off on posters because your world view is compromised by a post is hardly representative of someone with your stature here on the boards.

the part I have issue with is "I'm not going to stand in the way of that."... and if you don't see how that may raise an eye brow after the previous segments of his statement then I don't know what to tell you... not that hard. Maybe you don't like the word 'fishy'??? sorry... it still doesn't seem 'good' from my perspective... maybe as more come out it'll sit better
