So you don't listen to him, didn't really give us a reason why you don't....But he "is a low-brow shock jock and an idiot"? How would you know that if you don't listen to him for more than 5 mins?? Herd is great. And not a shock jock AT ALL. Guy is very imformative and gives a different perspective on things. You may not agree with his point of view, but he makes great points and is rarely off target.

The reason I don't like him is that he is not thoughtful or insightful. I think he tries to be provocative, but he tries to do it by saying idiotic things. For anyone in the Boston market or familiar with its sports media, my best comparison for Cowherd would be Ron Borges. Just because he is the only person saying something does not make what he is saying brilliant.

But sometimes...it does. I get tired of hearing the same things over and over again. Colin is very refreshing. And how is he not thoughtful or insightful?? He always does his homework on the points he makes. Again, if you really don't listen to him...how could you know any of this???

I've been listening to him for years. I don't always agree with him. But I can live with that. It's a lot better than those cheesballs, Mike and Mike, and the lunitic Mad dog.

He says top 12 team.....It must be the 11th or 12th ranked team because why wouldn't you say top 10??? Maybe I am crazy!

Easy on the Mike and Mike reference, remember, one of those Mike's is our own Mike Golic. Greeny on the other hand is like listening to a high school girl pedaling rumors, he is brutal. As far as the Cowherd/Borges comparison, I'd say you miss the mark a little bit. Borges is just plain dumb, he has the face for radio and the voice for mime, how he get's airtime is totally beyond me. I think Michael Felger is a contrarian the likes of Cowherd but he [Felger] gets great ratings.

To the original point re. major scandal breaking, No way it's ND, I'll go with Phil Knights boys in the upper north west.

He said top 10-12 team, suggesting perhaps a team that is ranked differently by various polling/ranking organizations/publications. What I didn't get from him was whether he was using the final rankings from last year or expected rankings for the coming year. Anyone care to speculate, as if this thread needs more!!

I think that is fair. Cowherd takes after Felger in that they are both annoying yuppie-types, and they both take positions for the sole purpose or trying to rile up their listeners, because they know that if they aren't being controversial then nobody will listen. But I compare Cowherd to Borges because I don't have any respect for either of their opinions.

As much of a d-bag as Felger is, I think he actually does know something about sports. I think he gets off on being annoying, but when he drops the shtick his opinions can sometimes be on point (...sometimes). With Borgie and Cowherd, they don't appear to know more about sports than your average basement-dwelling, talkshow-calling sports fan. Their entire careers are built on getting people so pissed off that they can't ignore them. That is how Borges generates clicks for the Herald and Cowherd gets listeners for his radio show.

Andy Gresh is another one who built his career on being annoying. Similarly, ND grad Jim Donaldson, who "writes" for the Providence Journal, is a shtick-based columnist whose function is to drive traffic by having absurd takes on everything and bating people into responding in the comment sections. Personally, I choose to give this type of sports media none of my attention or time. I get that some people love the bar room style "debate" that this creates. I find it tedious. Most people I find talking about sports in bars are clueless.

Love the heard. Guy tells it like it is. Most of you probably don't like him because he graduated from USC.

Great host and has a great show.

Now, as far as what team committed these violations? Could be anyone. I'll go with Oregon.

he's actually from washington, never graduated college and used to be a huskie fan but they suck now so hes a trojan. never took a class at usc. hes your typical frontrunning espn host.

i mean come on take a stand on something, dont just go with whats hot right now.

Since we seem to be discussing Cowherd as much as the story, count me as one who watches Sports Nation not because of his "insights," but because of Michelle Beadle's. She's a much more savvy analyst of the sports scene than Colin (And a lot easier to look at too).

I believe Colin graduated from the Eastern Washington Univeristiy. The same university that has Red Turf, and just beat Delaware to win the National Championship in the Bowl subdivision.

sounds like i have more of a clue than the guys who said he graduated from usc, also it says he "attended" ewu on his wikpedia page and im pretty sure he bragged about not graduating from college on one of his shows and constantly says he has a degree in "success". i could probably hunt down the archive but i dont really care all that much.

btw i wasnt saying it as a knock on him, just stating that he didnt go to usc.

" + artTitle.replace("-","") + " - " + "The Easterner" + " - " + "Sports" + "

i do have a clue. bitch.

EWU is only a pit stop for ESPN.
But that stop is how Colin Cowherd put the pieces in place. Cowherd, a former EWU student, hosts "The Herd" on ESPN Radio Monday through Friday.
Cowherd has always had a passion for broadcasting. He knew exactly what his goals were by the time he was 9 years old. He grew up in the small town of Grayland, Wash., before going to college.
He attended EWU from 1982 to 1986. He didn't graduate though; he left school with only 12 credits needed to finish because he was offered a job to be the play-by-play voice for the Pacific Coast League's Las Vegas Stars.
"A professor told me I was good enough to get a job, and was offered one that December," said Cowherd. "I always knew I wanted to be in broadcasting, so I left before I got my degree."

Read today that the program in question is Oregon, but Auburn is also linked to the same violations. Seems a guy named Will Lyles who is a known "street agent" has been steering kids to both schools for a few years now, and cashing in by doing so of course. The centerpiece of the violations revolve around blue-chip recruits Lache Seastrunk (Oregon) and Trovon Reed (Auburn).

*Read this on a message board, so don't take any of it as more than smoke.

Just decided last month to go back on the better cable package that includes espn. I'm on record as being down on espn. Breezed thru Cowherds show and really--nothing has changed. Its dribble-irrelevant dribble. Its like the scene in 'Croc Dundee' when he is asked (as he watches TV) do they have TV in the Outback-he nods and says yeh mate same old stuff as he watches I LOVE LUCY reruns. Cowherd is what he is and for him to say he has a degree in success is really self edifying. The only good of this is that Oregon/Auburn/whoever might get slammed if this agent directive is true. In a word for me Cowherd--irrelevant. He reminds me of the kid in high school from chess club that gets to call the varsity basketball games. Anyone who tells you he is not a joke sniffer is a jock sniffer. I've heard this guy is lobbying for a sitcom imaging his life experiences---really?

Per Cowherd
For the record, Oregon is not the school we have heard connected to these rumors. Nor is it Auburn. Nor will we mention the school’s name we’ve heard floated around as it’s not been remotely confirmed.

Oh, the dilemma! Who to believe, Cowherd or an unidentified message board?

Ah ha! Look at the last word in this article!

I believe they looked at Stanford because they looked at all of the final top 25 teams from last year. There was an article up on SI.com that showed the top 25 teams, where they finished in the poll and how many arrests or charges their current rosters have faced. Stanford being in the final top 25 was on there.

As for the name "Will Lyles", sounds like a false name as in "Will Lie". Reminds me of the controversy around steroids being delivered to the home address of Evander Holyfield but being sent to the name Evan Field. Oh those clever boxers.

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt, but at this point the Lyles debacle sounds more believable than anything else, and since when has Cowherd been a champion for truth and justice?

*Maybe Cowherd was instructed to throw people off the scent? I mean it's not like he cares about being right or credible as long as people are listening.

Stanford aparently did make the cut; but what about Pittsburgh?
