Favorite Irish Player Ever?

Out of guys I've actually had the pleasure to watch play it'd be a close one between Tom Zbikowski edging slightly over Jeff Samardzija and then they'd be followed by Golden Tate and Mike Floyd.
Mike might jump some people if he has the incredible year like I expect him to this coming season (Heisman contender).
I chose Zibby for my number one though because he was the definition of Irish Tough. He's a guy you wouldn't want to pick a fight with, and he laid hits and ran through tackles like it was nothing.

I like some of the choices, particularly OldManMike's, and it is nice for some greats like Blier, and Page to get recognition, but no one said Martin. A few got his teamate, Leon, but no one got a man who played in the NFL for 15 seasons at tackle and punted as well. Look at his all pro selections, and he is one guy if you watch the films, who could no doubt play today:
Jungle Jim Martin.
He was part of the greatest ND class of all time, and maybe the toughtest player of all times (and talk about play with a nasty attitude). Anyone know how he got his nickname?

I said earlier my favorite was Rick Mirer, and still like him.
My favorite current Irish, has to be Manti.
After being at the Sun Bowl, and getting in the stadium early watching the team warm up and just really like the guys on this team.
Really hard to pick a favorite when you love the Blue and Gold!!!

Golden Tate hands down. That kid has swagger coming out of every pore and he backed it up. Never have I personally witnessed someone literally unstoppable no matter how many defenders you put on him or how many weeks you game planned for him.

Stams had two of my all time favorite quotes. One was at a pep rally when he showed up a minute late to speak (the game was against Michigan) and he said, "Sorry I was late, but I just took a Bo and had to wipe my Schembeckler." The other was on a national tv interview after a game and asked about Wes Prichett and he talked about how Wes loved to play tetherball (total bs, but funny as hell).
I'll add Tim Brown, Tony Rice, and Rodney Culver. But if I had to pick one, it would be Stams edging out Grunhard.

You know who I have to give a lot of props to though? Brian Smith. He's been moved around so much it's ridiculous, but he's always been happy to contribute to the team. He really is a talented and special guy.
So ... he's your second favorite?
He was Marine Recon in the Pacific in WWII, a jungle fighter.

I have been an Irish fan since I was a kid (10-15 years ago). I grew up reading Knute Rockne books for book reports in elementary school. That is what started my Irish fan hood. So historically my favorite would be Rockne. My favorite player recently is Te'o. He shows great enthusiasm and toughness.

Offensive player? Discounting what's happened in the pros, I'd probably have to say Quinn. Golden Tate was great, and a really great person when I had the chance to meet him in person, but Quinn captured me a little more. Floyd is definitely moving up on Tate...I'd love to see a solid season.
Defensively? Zibby for now, but T'eo has been laying some serious hits!

i disagree. i never liked jimmy clausen from the second he rode a limo up to his announcement PC. i loved watching him play because i loved the excitement he brought to the QB position with his uncanny accuracy and arm strength, but he never seemed like an RKG to me. some of the stories i've heard of him (i don't know if they're true or not) lead me to believe he wasn't that much of a team player, like he was just here because charlie could put him on the fast track to the pros

Just for the heck of a little more ancient history, since it doesn't really hurt anyone: Back in the early thirties my Dad roomed with the current star, Andy Pilney, and was friends with Moose Krause. I thought I'd mention this because there is a tale in it about leg-strength in the good ol' days. Dad went out, unsuccessfully, for football his freshman year. Pilney was not only a running back [and passing] star but a field goal kicker---drop-kicking. After practices Pilney would stay out on the field to get the kicks in. Dad would stay out with him and field them. Dad said it was the most amazing thing. Pilney would stand at the 50-yard-line and dropkick the ball through the uprights; then, to show off, would turn around and dropkick one through the uprights on the other end. "Legends" of things like Gipp's superlong kicks apparently ain't legends. --- so, on topic, Dad would tell me to vote for Pilney. [with a nod to Krause].

Golden Tate. Real nice guy. Signed autographs and posed for photos with fans, including my youngest, after the Washington State game in San Antonio last year. He was the last player to board the team bus. Plus a month later he was gracious enough to sign the photo of him and my daughter right before he left ND for the NFL. One of the best gift my youngest ever received for x-mas. We're lifelong fans of him!
