Interesting move and a good one. Jackson has great spead and I hope that coach Kelly keeps him at kick off returns too.

Because it hasn't been confirmed yet. However, with Bennett Jackson now moving to DB, I think the staff knows he's gone.

Interesting move with Jackson, but I like getting athletes on the defensive side of the ball. IMO Kelly will always be able to find enough playmakers on offense so I have no problem with moving skilled players to the defense.

I almost included Jackson in my previous post on possibilities, but chickened out. My reason for considering this was that Kelly had said that Jackson was a great athlete but had difficulty picking up the subtleties of playing wide receiver. So.. if the old hips swivel well enough, we may have found another real talent now properly placed.

Bennett Jackson at DB? Really? I kinda liked the idea of him at slot in the futre...or maybe he could pull a Woodson...

BJ was never going to be a slot guy. He is a pure outside vertical threat if there has ever been one. You use guys like him to stretch coverage. His route running was just never quite there (understandable for a frosh). I won't be surprised if turns into a very good nickel back, or even a safety if he adds some weight, in a couple years... but he needs to be coached up and that will take time.

I liked him at slot (if he nailed down running routes) exactly because he could fly over the tops of safeties. I like slots who can stretch the field. Bulk for him was probably also needed though that way he could catch and hang on to it over the middle as well.

Sure tackler with speed, you tell me.

I think he ended up getting enough points to win more in thanks to his returning and the fake punt he did where he leaped a guy.

Of course that's not to say he doesn't have the speed and ability to tackle. I just haven't pictured him as a pure defender before. His FB status makes him look pretty excited/confident about it so that is very reassuring.

I hear you. If I remember correctly he had a handful of solo tackles on special teams too... Should be interesting

and let's not forget, BK knows what he is doing. the man can coach and he puts kids where he feels they can be successful and help the team. BJ cud end up back at WR in time you don't know. bottom line, keeping a talented athlete on the field. thankfully he w/b well coached to get the job done. Oh, and good luck mr. Okotcha. we'll see you in '12.

Jackson was not a great route runner and there were stories last year that he didn't have the best hands in the world. He was kind of like the exact opposite of TJ Jones.

He's blazing fast, tackles really well, has great toughness and has the body more of a defensive back anyway...

Rivals has him as OU too. I am glad for the kid but disappointed for us. I think he is going to be really solid.

Agreed. What's sad is that inevitably, ND blowhards are now going to start crawling out of the wood work saying how he was never any good and we're better off without him, yada yada yada...

Truth is, OU swept in at just the right time and stole a decent DB from us. Is he all-american material? Maybe not. But he is a player in a position of need for ND and that hurts regardless...

It sucks to lose any player but when your coaching staff can replace this loss with some one on the roster that quickly is awesome. Just goes to show that the coaches are always trying to make this team better and it says alot about player willing to switch positions.

I'm really liking the idea of BJ as a DB, he's not afraid of contact and has the raw athletic ability to play the position.

I agree with everything you just said. Its not like those things couldn't be learned though.

Thing I liked best about him really though was how he returned the ball. He got the ball and just went up field. No uncertainty when he saw a hole. Got us up the field and in good field position.

I actually called him returning before he started returning.

that sucks, why do these kids do this kind of thing every year? if i were a coach i think i would discourage my targets from committing too early, i would want them to enjoy the recruiting process and make the decision that is right for them when they are 100% ready to make it, and then stick with it!
