According to ISD, Kelly informed Ruffer today he will have a scholarship for next year. Good for him, IMO he absolutely deserves it. He will win us at least one game next year.

I'm happy for Ruffer. Most players earn their scholarship based on what they did in high school and what they will potentially do in college. Ruffer earned his based on what he has already done in college. And he definitely has earned it.

I do not count the Sun Bowl miss, he was hurt on the previous kickoff and still had the guts to go out there and try it.
Congrats Ruffer - you are an inspiration to Inter-mural Athletes everywhere!

For discussion purposes, I will bite the bullet and play devil's advocate. Ruffer absolutely deserves a scholarship. BUT, does anyone else think that 3 scholarship kickers is a bit excessive?

Ruffer on field goals
brindza on punting and TOUCHBACKS!!!

This is very good. Atleast we know we have a very good kicker that we can depend on.

I had the same thought, although they are 3 pretty talented guys.

I saw that U$C has verbals from 2 of Rivals' top 4 kickers, I believe. With their scholarship situation going forward, how much sense does that make? Unless one is a punter and Rivals doesn't differentiate. I know its a little off-topic, but can anyone explain that to me?

on the idea of "excess" kicker scholarships: I don't believe that what Ruffer wanted to do after this year was known with any certainty, and there was Brindza, arguably the best kicking prospect in the country....seems unmysterious to me. And since Ruffer will be gone to the NFL after next season, we might just roll on as if nothing's changed...also not bad. And since Brindza might well be able to do all the kicking, that might save a scholarship in the near future...hmmm, maybe I'm on Kelly's side on this one, too.

Now for a winning FG at the gun in the 13th game of the 2011 season to seal a NC.

To IHMM: unfortunately for Nicholas Tausch, I don't think that he any longer DOES fit in. Kelly obviously feels that Tausch is "OK" but not exactly what he wants [therefore, Ruffer]. The previous coaching staff apparently felt the same way [therefore Ruffer].

Tausch would have been our "OK" kicker [and I am not saying that he is a poor kicker], if Ruffer would not have turned up, but he did, and then along comes this cannon-legged guy from Michigan, and, well, there we go.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nicholas thought about transferring if he sees the writing-on-the-wall with Brindza, and still wants to kick collegiately. If he wants to graduate from ND, I believe that Kelly will honor the scholarship all four years. That's NCAA football, ND-style [and most other places too].

Ruffer - better than Rudy!

ND will not pull a scholarship (be it a kicker or Nate). In my mind it goes to why Our Lady's University is different. Just not in the habit of "...you are no longer useful to us so we are no longer paying your way." For goodness sake, these guys were there for this program when we were down. Now we are up so cast them aside?

Shame on anyone who thinks that way.

I want to win as bad as anyone else but if I wanted to win that way I would be saying "Roll Tide."
