To quote the great Sesame Street: "which one of these things is not like the other, which one of these things just doesn't belong"

Oh oh oh oh oh oh I know...ND, Cal, UCLA and Stanford are all good schools for a football player to get an education, while USC isn't...Am I right ;)

I thought Cal was a sure favorite until they got 4 defensive lineman in the last month. I still don't think he comes off the West coast myself, but it seems pretty wide open. Interesting that he announces a decision date two days after BK visited him at school.

ESPN agrees; They believe its down to a Cal / ND battle.

Interview with Scarlett @ the AAA game. Talks about his 5 finalists, and goes into detail about how ND picked up ground:

Thanks for the video. Not sure I feel any stronger that we'll get him, but I don't feel any less of a shot. Lets just hope he can see what ND football is gonna soon become as opposed to what it has recently been.

Would love to see Mr. Scarlett come east. He would be a super addition to a strong incoming d-line group. I think this is a real basis to building the defense overall skill level.

Would love to add this kid to the mix. Seems like he would be a great addition to our class if we can somehow convince him to come to South Bend. Cal will be very hard to beat though.

Some interesting points in the interview.

He looked like he was caught off guard when asked to comment on each school, and he immediately went to talk about ND. Typically in a situation like this, people default to what they have thought the most about while they develop answers for each point. This is different than a rehearsed or common question like, name the schools you like. Edge to ND?

Coaching staffs/relationships are important to him. Stanford would seem to be eliminated here, and he mentioned positives from ND, Cal, and UCLA - not USC.

He's a smart kid, looking for a good education. I would put USC last in this ranking, with a slight edge to Stanford and ND.

He mentioned he likes small, private, and catholic. Edge to ND, with UCLA and Cal losing points.

Mentioned that it would be nice to be close to home, but that wasn't really a factor.

Putting this together I think ND is the leader considering this - say 60% chance. I do wonder if Lynch's decsion makes a difference? But if he is still strong on Cal, the number of recruits probably don't matter to him.

I like this kid and hope he goes Irish.

Well said. If staying home is not as important to him then we shouldn't assume he would be harder to get off the west coast for any other reason then 4 of his top 5 are in Cali (also in favor of this line of thinking brings us to his state school not in his top 5 despite competing for the National Championship).

We have a good shot. Lynch may affect this decision...

Does anyone think Lynch's decision will affect whether he goes to ND or not

What are the chances that Aaron makes a final decision before Brennan announces? It would seem that it would lessen his chances if Lynch does commit, but it is hard to say.
On a Cal board, it was mentioned that Brennan mentioned the value of a Cal degree; so you have to assume that is a priority and puts ND right up there. He already has had an injury and a plate in his shoulder, so maybe he is one of the smart ones that sees football as a means to the end, not the end. If that is the case, it may not matter how many DEs are signed up; just where he'll be setting his future up for the best chance of success.

If Lynch does come. He won't.

So much wrong here.

1. There has been some talk about his ability to play at MLB as a run stopper.
2. His other leader, Cal, has something like 5 4* DL committed in this class. If we got Lynch we would have 2.

Great points. They have talked alot about his ability to move to linebacker. So maybe the competition is Ishaq - btw what position is Ishaq being requited at?:devil_2:

My west coast bias really hopes this guy picks ND. Good grades and test score, he'd be a great fit.

Rumor-----The Irish see Scarlett as a great Middle Line Backer.
I think they said they would slim him down and work with him over
a red-shirt year as the guy to replace TEO as THE MAN in the middle
of the greatest defensive front 7 in ND history.

Williams---Lynch---Nix----Tuitt-----Councell
---------------Teo-------Carlo---------

The vision is blurry at times, but it's a possibility.
Say your prayers ND fans.

Following recruiting often makes fans too fickle. The current freshman that play sparingly, contribue on special teams, or redshirt are like yesterdays meat for the 17 year old 4 and 5 star players that have yet to step on campus. Shembo, Moore, Spond, Schwenke and Utopo will have something to say about that lineup (and if Teo is still eligible so is KLM, Hafis Williams, Cwynar, McDonald as a redshirt seniors).

Sorry to rain on the parade, I get what you mean, I am as excited as anyone to land the kind of talent we might in the 2011 class. Just do not forget how far behind in development a 17/18 year old true freshman is from a 22/23 year old 5th year (look at us in 2007 for an example).

^^^I could not have said it any better myself. Unless you're a five-star guy, you're not going to overtake a 22-year old senior in a defensive front seven. When it is a position like WR, where speed is speed, it's a lot easier to come in as a frosh and play a lot. But the defensive front seven is so different from high school in terms of muscle and experience needed. No way that lineup happens.

The "Lynch, Nix, Tuitt" combination could happen for 2012, 2013, and 2014, but it is not happening in 2011.

Well, if the Injury bug hits us again.... we could see them before we all would probably like.... who thought Tommy Rees and Cierre wood would be our starting QB and Rb before the season.

I knew a few crazies on here that thought Wood would start

Scarlett at LB is more than likely nothing more than a rumor...he fits the bill more as a possible replacement for his fellow Oregonian Ethan Johnson when he graduates next year.

It's scarey how much they remind me of each other physically and on film.

its been said above but people keep forgetting a dominant d-lineman in HS is waaaaay different than 300lb o-lineman they will go up against in college...the scenario that really gets me excited is that we will have great depth and being able to rotate peoPle in to keep everyone fresh and there won't be a drop off in talent...that is how the SEC is and hopefully we can now have it in the BEND

I'm 99% sure it came from his lips talking about ND in an interview.
