jonesman,
just cant justify putting so much stock into one kid or even saying one will make a difference, to me its like saying te'o alone will bring the physical defense back to nd.... that doesnt happen. it happens with multiple players getting taught by good coaches...i think everyone is over looking the fact that you have to look at wood as a freshmen and look at what hes dont so far in a totally new system. he will be the guy reguardless who we get at that position.

Savon is the type of kid that can make that big of a difference. All the other tools and pieces are in place. We have a solid OL and outside weapons to provide balance. He brings speed and power in the same package with solid hands out of the backfield. Think along the lines of Marcus Lattimore. I'm not saying he will have that impact as a freshman but Lattimore carried USC to where they are right now. He is a bull and without him Jeffery is getting triple covered. This kid is a very important recruit and piece to our success.

I hope we land this kid but I am alright if we do not!

On a side note, USC(Trojans) won the court case to get USC for themselves. Please start calling South Carolina, The Game****s or South Carolina. It gets confusing!

Thanks!

From Mods: No need to put someone down for asking a simple request. And almost everyone on a ND board will think of the University of Southern California when you refer to USC.

Thank you

Well they have some very young and talented runningbacks. He wont get the playing time we will here and Tolzein is gone after this year. Wisconsin will take a few steps back. He is a very underrated part of that teams success.

You're kidding right? While the senior class was fantastic, Wisconsin is still one of the best running teams in the country and has made a name for itself doing that for twenty years.

If he comes here he would almost start his very first game at ND. As long as he shows good stuff in the spring He would be close to taking Woods spot.

Thats exactly wat I was saying. They have talented young runningbacks so he wont get the immediate playing time that he would here. However, without a legit passing game, it makes running the ball a lot more difficult. Tolzein (spelling) is a very good game manager and an underrated part of that team. So I'm not exactly sure what part I should be kidding about.

You realize that Wood was rated essentially the same as a recruit as Huggins is now (4 star, eighth at his position and 76th nationally according to Rivals) and has averaged just under 5 yards a carry this year and has experience in the offense and two years of college weight training under his belt?

Huggins won't be taking his spot anytime soon.

Rankings don't mean **** once you get to college. There are too many variables in high school to rank everybody on the same scale. It's a clean slate once you step foot on campus. If Huggins comes in and is playing better than Wood, then start him.

I agee with this 100 percent. Star rankings are nice and all, but if a 5 star kid goes to college and doesn't fit the system then his potential will probably not be realized whereas a 2 or 3 star kid goes to the right school and with good coaching can have a better college career. In the end it's all about getting the right kinds of player that fits into your system whether it's a 2 star or 5 star.

I agree with the canuck, but if Woods doesn't learn how to hold on to a football, that could change.

agree it takes more then a year to run and understand kelly's system im sure they really haven't scratched the surface with what wood can do. just needs to mature mentally and physically and hold on to the football. i think people are going to be surprised on how well he turns out

I won't be. He will be the next Irish 1,000 yard rusher. I expect next year with 4/5 OL returning and a potent passing game, should most things go to plan, that Notre Dame averages 150 rushing yards a game (they currently have 120.8). So of the 1,800 total yards I expect Wood to have about 1,100 or 1,200 of them.

His areas to improve over the off-season are blitz pickup, patience, and ball control. Those aren't the hardest things to fix. Ball control will probably be taken care of by the end of spring practice and fall camp. Blitz pickup is just learning the offense and getting tough, we have already seen progress this season and it could be a non-issue by the bowl game. His intrarun (I made up a word..) patience is the only true facet of his game that needs adjustment. He won't outrun everyone at this level, but the coaches will harp on him all off-season and during the bowl practices when they have time to slow down.

My point is, he is much closer to being a complete back than plenty of people give him credit for. Fumbling can be fixed entirely in the spring. The rest will come naturally. He is a stud.

I just don't care for Woods in decision on the field. I wish he would gjust put his head doene sometimes and get an extra yard or too.

He's a redshirt freshman. Wake up. It takes time to develop in the big leagues for everyone minus Lattimore.

That's silly.

Wood, not Woods, is more of a finesse back anyway...he's the burner this program has been lacking and needing for years.

Plus, I think he's shown with his improvements this year that he can lower his head and get the extra yard(s). He wasn't doing it a lot in the early part of the season, and he's probably always going to try and break the big run from time to time instead of settling for 5 yards, but I definitely was happy with his physicality this year. I didn't think we'd see it until next year.

How can anyone not be super pumped that this kid has THREE years left? I'm probably not alone in thinking he could be in the discussion with Julius Jones, Denson and Walker as the best running backs in recent Irish history, and honestly, I think Wood has the highest ceiling of all those players.

Definitely the highest ceiling of all of those guys

gotcha, i think he has the potential to be a better back then all of them.... his size, speed and that shake he has. plus he can catch the ball. its just a matter of o-line playing well and him maturing mentally and physically. blocking know when to lower the boom.... know when to step out or get down..... think hes gonna be legit...
