Any Stand-Up Comedy Fans Want To Lend A Hand... And An Opinion?

Hey, Guys...

Along with my years in the wrestling biz, I also used to make a living as a stand-up comic. It's been over a decade since I did any real stand-up, but my son loves comedy and with his prodding, I have an audition for America's Got Talent this Saturday... I figure if I'm going to jump back in - cold - I might as well do it at a venue where I can make a total ass of myself in front of potentially tens of millions of people.

Anyway, I have narrowed my audition material down to three bits. If any of you folks has a few minutes, I'd love to get some feedback as to which one you think is the best - if any.

I should warn you, we don't have any open mic venues around here, so I had to tape the bits playing just to a camera. That is, of course, the worst possible situation for stand-up, as you have no audience reaction, good or bad. Hopefully you can still get the feel for the bits.

I would really appreciate any feedback you guys would be willing to offer.

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,
-Rusty- (Curtis Candy)

I think I like the Angels bit the best, with Prison coming in 2nd. They we're all 3 pretty good, but you're right..an audience would have helped. Can you submit all 3 for the audition?

Curtis dog, Dude. That shit was good. I'm stoned as hell right now and I was pretty damn impressed. I liked Prison the best. Dude you had to have smoked a joint before you did that or when you were thinking that shit up. Fucking Hilarious. You got my vote.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, guys!

NDOM, this line: "I'm stoned as hell right now and I was pretty damn impressed" was WAY funnier than anything I had. Nice!

Yea, Dive, it's tough when you don't have an audience, because whether they like you or not, it's always WAY better to have some sort of reaction.

I can only do one bit for the audition, but it will be in front of several producers, so at least I'll have people to work off of.

Thanks again, guys, this really does help me to decide which bit to use.

Anyone else?

Close between Angels and Prison
You don't give a dopey kid like me that kind of power and control over the emotions of heaven.
Goulash?
tiny shriveled...ego. Stupid angels.

I hate clowns. ohhhh and the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz. ..... So I just stabbed myself, because at that point it just seemed easier.

Funny stuff. You are a brave and funny man.

The "first" time you went to prison?

I brought a gun. He he brought a metal folding chair...I was way more creative about hardcore matches than he was....

All three were good, but the Prison one was probably the best for me. (I need to find a way to finally disagree with DiveRightIn, since that never seems to happen. )

Good luck buddy. Keep us posted.

Again, everybody, I can't say thanks enough. The input from all of you has greatly helped me in deciding my plan of attack...

When you do the material over and over like I do when I rehearse, you lose all sense of objectivity. While I liked "Prison" the best, I truly had no idea how it would come off to other people... (Hey, I gotta admit, that's the first time in my life I actually wrote or said "I liked prison the best")

On our first audition, we're only given 90 seconds. "Prison" was a bit longer than that, but I could have gotten it down. However, "Angels" is naturally shorter - and the feedback on that seemed pretty good - so I think I'll go with that one for the first audition. That way, in the unlikely event I move any further in the contest, I still have "Prison" in my back pocket (yes, another phrase I never thought I'd say) for later, when hopefully we get a bit more time and I'm gonna need some of my strongest material.

"Wrestling" is okay, but I think I need to punch it up a little with a couple more jokes and a different ending.

Thanks again for your feedback, gang! I'll let you know how everything works out.

...Of course, if by some wild chance I do make it on the show, I will at some point try to work in the obtuse phrase, "MMS" right out of the blue... Only us here will know it means "Mark May Sucks!" :)

Curtis - gotta say Bro it takes some huge, brass plated juevos to post your work on such a public (and highly critical) forum like this. I applaud you for having the courage to put yourelf out there.

Then, on top of it all, you were damn funny! Very tough to do without the vibe of an audience. I have done stand up before and it is hard to have a good cadence without a crowd.

Great job my friend. Prison is my favorite, but Angels was great too. Awesome job!

Break a leg!!!!

Thanks, GO IRISH, I appreciate that a lot!

We're getting all set for the trip down to NYC tomorrow. The toughest thing is finding what I want to wear, as nearly all my clothes have an ND logo of some sort on them, and logos are expressly not allowed.

Which sucks, because "America's Got Talent" is an NBC show and hmm, which network has a contract to telecast all of ND's home games?! They should be encouraging me to wear Notre Dame gear!

I'll bet if Father Joyce were still with us, he'd straighten the network muckety-mucks out for me!

Well, we went to the audition yesterday. It was a lot of fun, and the audition went well, and if they're interested in having me back, they'll contact me by the end of tomorrow.

The place was PACKED with people! My son had a great time in the city, so it made the 6 hours we were in the auditions more bearable.

The audition itself took place in front of a camera and two production assistants. They don't have any say in who moves on; the tapes are reviewed by higher-ups later.

All in all, it was a fun experience.

Thanks again for all your help, Gang!
