I was listening to the local sports talk radio show as I often do and they started talking about fans:

1) Realistic-they see the team how they really are. Don't expect them to win championships every year. They do back their team no matter what, win or lose. Never too high or too low. They probably have one jersey, a hat, a couple of T-shirts. Probably go to one game or more a year. Yells a lot during games.

2) Hater Fans-Nothing the team does makes them happy. Their team could win by 50 and somehow almost lost the game according to them. The coach is an idiot and they could play QB better. They have a Jersey with their own name on the back. Their cat has a jersey. They are forced to watch games by themselves. NDOM

3) The Optimist The team will win the championship every year. Who cares if they are 90 point underdogs on the road with a 4th string QB. They will win. The next coach is the great next hire and the next recruit will be a game-changer. Has a room or garage dedicated to the team. Named their 1st child after someone. Family photos consist of everyone in their jerseys. Their coffin is team colors. The refs always cheat their team. Crys on the inside after losing.

Which fan are you? Which poster is what?

I would say I am mostly a 1 with a little mixture of 3 in there because I know ND will not win every game, but the optimistic side of me can always find a way for them to win.

yea im probably a 3 with a little 1! I get carried away a bit, i do have my entire office engulfed with ND memorabilia, i dont cry on the inside (anymore) and i dont believe they win a champ every year but i always root for a win no matter what!

oh and the refs do cheat! and you cannot convince me otherwise!

not all conspiracies are theories!

Let's see. I own one jersey, 2 hats. Also pillows, a mirror, a bottle opener, shorts, etc...But then again, my dad and brother went/go to ND, so memorbillia tends to pile up.

My name is definitely not on the jersey, nor do I have a room specifically for ND. I tend to like all of our coaches, and if Willingham had recruited more players I would still like him too. There's a voice in the back of my mind that tells me I could be a better QB/RB, but I know it's a liar.

I go to games when I can, 1 a year would be fantastic.

So mostly a 1 with sprinkles of 3 and a faint hint of 2.

I am mostly a 1, but have plenty of 3, and even some 2 inside as well....which one comes out all depends on amount of alcohol consumed.

May I add a fourth?

4) Justification Fan– No matter what happens to the Irish they come up with “reasons” for the loss. The referees screwed us. We are one "x" plays away from being 10- 0. Or my favorite…when we get “x” recruit we will be able to compete for a championship. Yet in the end it comes down to heart and who is on the field is willing to impose their will on the other team.

LOL!! There are lots of those fans! Personally I am a #1 for sure but also have some of the #3 characteristics as well.

Love this thread. Well done PI. I have a list of 2's.

I cross them off with lipstick when they get banned

Funny part about this is that I guarantee everybody views themselves as a mix of 1 or 3 (well except NDOM of course, he'll admit whole heartedly he is a 2!!!). The only way to REALLY know is to see how others perceive what group you fall into, i.e. MICK states he is mostly a 3 with a dash of 1. I COMPLETELY agree with him, but I think IRISH Jayhawk is definitely the same, but he thinks he is 1 with a sprinkle of 3..... It’s all in the eye of the beholder :)

I'm kind of a mix. If we won by 50 I would be happy but that will never happen. I dont think the coach is an idiot. I think the old coaches were. I dont have a ND jersey and I dont have a cat because I HATE cats. And most of the time I do watch the game alone because my girlfriend cant stand me yelling and screaming at the tv. And I will ALWAYS be Irish no matter how many games we lose. Its just getting old thats all. Anyhow, thats my two cents.

5. The "Fair weather" Fan
These people are fans of teams who are winning and winning NOW, so it doesnt really apply for ND.

what would be interesting is if a MOD would give the top 5: 1's 2's 3s and 4s....should we be scared on where we would get put? or how we are perceived? hmmmmmmm

I'll be the first to raise my hand and say I have some 4 in me. :(

I typically point out 2-3 plays go ND's way it's an Irish win.

Comes down to it we are all a little bit of all 4, IMO. This is how I honestly view myself and my ND genetic-fan break down....

Fan 1 - 60%
Fan 2 - 5%
Fan 3 - 15%
Fan 4 - 20%

IMHO...I think we can all claim to have 1-5 in us...however in the end we all love ND...and it will be sweet when we return to the top of the college football world!

I was going to suggest the bandwagon fan

but there is no need now.

As for me, I am a hard core #1/realist.

Somehow I'm halfway between 1 and 3 without being 2. I do have to admit I yell at the games but I know I'd be laughed out of the stadium if I tried to do the coaches, players or refs jobs.

I am basically a 1, but traces of 3 and 4. I will go to 4 games this year. Most of the ND stuff I have comes from gifts from friends and family. I predicted 8-4 at the outset of the August prediction period. They have to go 5-1 over the remainder of the season. Tough, but entirely (realistically) possible

I am a three. Not necessarily proud of that. I thought we were BCS bound this year. But wait we still might have a shot right? lol
