Next Years Recruiting if Charlie Stays

Up to this point Charlie and his staff have been excellent recruiters. I'm concerned at what next years recruiting class might look like if Charlie stays.

The trend it college football is to commit earlier then ever. So far this year, 14 out of our 17 commits committed before the season even started. Given this trend, how much would next years recruiting be hurt if Charlie stays?

Will recruits interested in ND, commit before the season starts, knowing Charlie could be fired later if we have another mediocre season?

Will recruits interested in ND wait till later in the season to commit to see what kind of season we are having?

I guess you could argue that recruits were faced with it a little bit this year knowing that CW drew a fair amount of heat after last year's debacle and it didn't seem to hurt us that much. But if CW stays, he is on the hottest of hot seats and recruits know it.

If Weis is back with lame duck status then recruiting is going to be horrible it's either move on now or give him a few years to turn it around, guaranteeing him just 1 more season is the worst thing they can do IMO because it will screw up a couple of recruiting classes.

Not technically going to be a lame duck, because he isnt necessarily going to lose his job once next season is over, if the team does as expected, BCS bowl expected. Think next years class is going to be comparable to the #1 ranked '08 class with Floyd Filer Cave etc......... only if Charlie stays, IMO.

word! Even if Charlie gets canned next year....at least he'll be able to put his recruiting to work(lord knows that hasnt failed him yet) and leave a pretty good class, despite some defections, for a new coach to come in with...

If Charlie is fired, the new guy better lock up Seantreal Henderson. Kid is the best OT prospect in a long, long time.

Yes, Ragone might be our biggest pickup next year. From the sounds of it he's got the swagger this offense needs.

Call it what you want but perception is reality and the recruits won't come early and often as they have been with the perception that ND needs to win big in 2009 hence the lame duck comment.

So IMO they should either fire Weis now or make it be know that he's got 2 seasons to make ND a contender though another bad season would get him fired after 1 more season.

Anyone ever heard of Tyler Bray? He is a junor QB. I know he has received a couple of letters from ND. And he has taken a game visit to USC. I don't know that he is ND or USC caliber material but I was just curious if anyone here heard his name before.

He is fine...Weis will be around for the duration of his contract.

I agree with you. Sometimes you have to hit what appears to be "rock bottom" before the gigantic climb to the top. After these past 2 years, ND has to be at rock bottom. Look at Joe Pa. Several years back the PSU fans and alumni wanted his head on a platter, the game has passed him by, blah blah blah. Now PSU is at the top of the Big 10 and had a decent shot at making it to the NC game. Plus, recruiting is going well for them that they should continue to be a "player" in years to come.

Ragone on offense and lets not forget about Darrin Walls on defense. He was our #1 corner before he left for the semester.

Those will be two very athletic players for the Irish. I can't wait to see those guys back on the field for Notre Dame next year.

Our defense should be much better next year. Bruton is the only guy that I think will be hard to replace. Crum underachieved all year and the young guys behind him seem to have more upside!

Actually I think Harrison Smith will end up being an impact player next year at his natural postion of free safety. I figure McCarthy will apply for a 5th year which will be great in my opinion and he will continue to play his S.S position.

as long as smith can learn to avoid the costly penalties. he was certainly an "impact" player this season with the 15 yd penalty away from the play to begin the 2nd half of the pitt game and the holding penalty near the end of the syracuse game. granted, grimes' holding penalty on rudolph's 50 yd screen play was the straw that broke the camel's back imo, but smith's on the last drive was still costly. i'm sure syracuse would've converted on 4th down, though. i would've loved them having that added pressure of having to convert that 4th down rather than being given 15 smooth yrds on the final drive. don't get me wrong, i love H. Smith, but the penalties i would love to live without and hopefully he'll be more mature next season and be that much better at his naturl spot.

i am really expecting alot from this team next year. but i guess i expect ALOT every year. they all have playing time and experience harrison or hayseed is going to be a beast at the saftey position and even when we use him in the lb role, our secondary is going to be great. gary gray got alot of experience and our freshman class showed alot of talent plus we are getting our number one corner back, linebackers even withg the loss of crum are going to be faster and hopefully more explosive, stockton may start at the beginning of the season if he is as good as what ive heard. hopefully these kickers we have will be able to be consistent so we wont hold our breath every time a foot touches the ball. offensive line will be a question mark, i think it will depend on who we bring in to work with them. the talent is there but the coaching isnt. loaded at wr and we have two guys who didnt touch the field this year not to mention shaq coming on board. rb is building a nice stable of talent and jimmy, well jimmy may need some competition for the starting role. just to push him and make him try instead of just having that whatever attitude. i think next year is going to depend on the offensive line and jimmys decision making though. just my thoughts. and charlie will continue to produce as a recruiter. i think we are going after the best class in the country even better than last years. henderson is the diamond of this class though and about 3 other tackles are very important to us
