Well, you might have forgotten about his catch because the idiot play-by-play guy credited it to Floyd...Seriously though, it'd be nice to get more from him

You can only get "from" the receivers what Crist sends them. Seems ND has not yet figured out how to counter the fast rush by defenses. Heaven forbid changing the snap count, or having the center hold his head up longer before he snaps.

And how about Rudolph? 2 catches for 3 yards in the past 2 weeks?

Simply seeing, and pointing out the flaws in the team is perfectly reasonable and acceptable. Sure we won, but until we are playing flawless football in all facets of the game, there will be room for improvement. What do you think the coaching staff is doing? They are ripping them apart, starting Monday, for the performance tonight. Sure they played well enough to win, but short of their standards, as well as many of ours. I don't understand why treating the game tonight, exactly how the players and coaches will, is wrong in any way. Sure we should be happy with a win, and I am, but there were a lot of mistakes.

When we were running 3 wide Goodman was on the field 90% of the time instead of TJ. Goodman also dropped at least 3 balls I remember... which stalled a number of drives. Good play from Riddick and our #3 is crucial as team run bracket coverage on Rudolph with a LB/S and often give safety help to Floyd. The majority of the time the opposition rushes 5 Theo and TJ/Goodman have single coverage. They need to step up and catch balls when they're there... and Dayne needs to not miss throws to his left. Once we correct those two things we will be a very hard offense to stop.

A few throws downfield might help. BC's defense kept getting closer and closer and stacking the box which killed our running game in the second half. The strategy appears to double Floyd and Rudolph; we really need Jones, Theo and Goodman to go on a few deep moves as they are single covered almost all the time.
Crist also needs to develop at least some touch on his short passes. It is a lot to expect the receivers to catch a fast ball at ten yards.
Years ago the Bears had a QB named Bobby Douglass who could throw the ball 80 yards; unfortunately he used the same velocity on five yard passes. Chris reminds me of him, although Douglass was a great runner.

This is where Kelly's 'spread offense' is supposed to stop the rush. The spread is supposed to:
create one on one match ups - we are getting those with some doubles on Floyd,
take advantage of team speed - something we lack
limit the defense by formation - the defenses we play seem to adjust to our offense more than we are adjusting to the defense
reduce blitzing - some slants would stop the LBs blitzing

So, we still have some ground to cover. Once we remember Kelly is working with recruits that were chosen for the Weis - pro style offense not his, then we will move on. Crist does need to work on the short pass and maybe this is why Kelly is not running more slants across the middle, I don't know. We will see.

Teams figured out he was "the guy" and focused on him. Crist has not handled that well at all.

Yeah we have to go downfield, roll out of the pocket, and use some screens.

I would really like to see ND stretch the field more, and am kind of getting annoyed they don't. Noone thinks they are going to do it, if they went deep 3 times a game at the right times they'd probably get 6 each time. Noone believes Crist will throw the ball long, defenses play so tight.

I'm guessing that TJ isn't running Dayne's favourite routes or isn't usually in the first two options which get used the most on each play.

I tend to be in a variety of a school-of-thought like Irish.Ca about this. I think that a). Goodman is getting more snaps, and that's a good thing because he's a contributor; b) Crist is a nervous QB who needs "security blanket" receivers at this stage in his career [wasn't Goodman one of the guys who worked out with him in California?]; c). TJs routes seem often a bit longer and wider than anyone else's, and Riddick reaps more benefit for a "short-route-focussed" Crist than TJ does. I am a BIG TJ fan and think that he and Riddick are going to be serious trouble for opponents for years. [Maybe even serious trouble for PT for Jackson, Atkinson, and Daniels---but the competition should be magnificent].

Now that we have Daniels, I'd like George Atkinson to play safety. We need the depth.

I highly doubt that Atkinson will play safety for us. There is an article at ISD on Atkinson that says how excited he is to play in notre Dames spread offense. I 100% agree with you that it would be great but thats why I think Wayne Lyons and Christian French are so imortant for this years class.

Not going to happen. Atkinson is a truly dynamic football player with the ball in his hands (witness the 3 TDs in 90 seconds last weekend), and he is playing offense all the way. We do need safety help, but George Atkinson is coming to ND to play on the offensive side of the ball, no doubt about it.

Never mind.

This kid could be like Golden Tate on acid. I think I just died inside thinking about this guy and Daniels on the outside with Jones in the slot (I think that's where Jones will eventually end up after Theo graduates) a few years down the road. Man.

I'm literally speechless after watching that. He is AMAZING! Not only does he possess that coveted speed, but he can really break some tackles. I'm convinced..., he needs to be on offense. LOL.

Crist rarely seemed to get past his first two reads, plus he still is a bit slow on getting rid of the ball once he makes his read. Goodman's "drops" were pretty bad throws IMO and hard to pin entirely on him.

We also should not have this problem with future first time starters since the system will be well established and easier for a QB to step in and perform.

In many of the short throws, it seems you are almost better off not catching it if you lose proper momentum/angles. One AA play stands out where he batted the ball down rather than catch a pass that would have definitely lost a yard or two. Maybe some more experienced folks could add some depth to this or correct me if I am wrong.

The Bobby Douglass reference reminded me of a similar story

The Bobby Douglass reference reminded me of a similar story

Dan Pastorini, QB for the Oilers in the 70s and 80s, had about a strong an arm as anyone who has ever played QB. An announcer told Fran Tarkenton about how Pastorini, while in college, threw a football into a 6th floor dorm window. Tarkenton responded: Yeah, but his receiver was on the 4th floor.

and Tarkenton had the creds to make that quip. He was the best QB who is rapidly being forgotten---the original uncatchable scrambler.
