Oh old man mike.. you and your long winded posts, this website is full of characters, all with impressive input, and even more impressive ways of telling it.
At my age one has little but wind left. The team, however, is going to be loaded with wind even in the fourth quarter--and it'll have some wallop coming right behind it. "We gunna be Beast!!"
23 chinups at 350+. Mr. Longo is paying dividends.
Wow... the last time I tried a chinup, my arms got longer.
Watch out Dirty, Old Man Mike might have to give you one of his famous (infamous?) lectures.
That is a great point and I think it sets the example. Mendoza always looked like he just came from an afternoon at Hometown Buffet.
You mean bore me to death about how he walk to school bare foot in the snow type stories.![]()
I heard on ESPN they said tim tebow doesn't pull himself up, he pulls the bar down
Worse, he'll tell you about the time before internet and TV. THOSE are the ones that haunt your dreams..

Is it true that old black/white photos are that way because color wasn't invented yet?
Careful now, you young whippersnapper, you!
[WARNING! WHAT FOLLOWS IS ANOTHER BORING, LONG WINDED STORY FROM AN "OLD-TIMER"]
Though color television broadcasts were becoming common in the mid sixties, my father didn't bother getting a color set until my sophomore year, 1971 - 1972. My mother confided to me that, despite his negative public demeanor regarding Notre Dame's chances of success in any given game (something of a "toughen up, dip-shit, if you're going to be a believer" Jesuit exercise), he bought the "Now In Color! Magnavox" primarily to watch ND games.
End of reminiscence. Sleepy Time calls.

It's still damn impressive and is a pretty good indication that Stewart will be mauling defensive lineman and linebackers all game long...this leading to more wins.
I knew the two-time world's strongest man...he couldn't do one chin up. Isn't that crazy?
Ian Willliams squat went from 485 to over 600.
Ethan Johnson's squant went from 395 to 550.
This all goes into the conditioning element that was ignored by Weis. You build this base/core strength you'll see drastic improvement in the trenches.
I think you'll be surprised how much "being in shape" helps this team.
Wouldn't the military academies be champions every year if pull ups + being in shape = championships?
Anyone have any ideas who might be the 1 or 2 players asked to step in at corner/safety? Daniels? Collinsworth? Jackson?
Apples to oranges. The military academies also have weight requirements.
23 chin ups isn't the most amazing number.
They are:
(a) Stewart weighing 350+ lbs
(b) Only 3 chin ups prior to this off season
(c) Improvement of 20 in just a few months
That's serious gain.
when i watched the press conference it sounded like he said when Stewart got on campus he could only do 3 chin ups , so in 4 years thats not a bad gain, even though that is a major accomplishment for someone his size.
maybe BK meant when he got on campus that's all Stewart could do, maybe my ears were just playing tricks on me
I just checked 2 sources...Kelly said "When we came" Stewart could only do 3-4 chin ups. So that gain is in this off season. He also put him at 362 lbs.
COACH KELLY: Well, I’ll give you a couple of examples from testing results. Chris Stewart, for example, here is a young man when he came in could only do about three or four chin-ups. He did 23 chin-ups at 362 pounds.
oh really, not that i doubt you but i just went to read the transcript after i posted my previous post and this is what i got.
Coach Kelly Transcript
not that all transcripts are correct because the word "he" and "we" sound similiar, so it could be a typo and who ever wrote the transcript
Okay...sorry. You're right about the quote...it was "when he came in." I listened again and it's clearly what he said.
But that was answering this question:
"Q. Coach, obviously you can’t watch the guys in the summer, but I’m sure Paul Longo gives you some good reports. Was there anybody he reported that took a surprise or huge leap over the summer that stood out?"
So, he was specifically referencing gains from "over the summer."
As a freshman at ND I remember going through a series of "tests" the first day of PE. I managed to do 30 pull-ups. I think I did in the neighborhood of 45 chin-ups. I paid a price, though. I had a hard time carrying books and moving food from plate to mouth for a few days.
Some kids couldn't manage even one pull-up or chin-up, but I'd been a swimmer since 6th grade so upper body strength was important. However, I was a flyweight at 125 pounds. That Stewart, at his size, could do even three chin-ups is amazing. That he's now able to do 23 is a testament to commitment and training. Methinks this bodes well.
He obviously isn't the world's strongest man one time then.
