That seemed like a pretty generic depth chart, can't really pay much attention to it.

It does look like Kelly lost a lot of weight.

I'm surprised he didn't mention Tyler Stockton. Is it because he's still young? I gotta think he'll make some impact this year.

Looked like he leaned towards veterans on that depth chart

Holy Notre Dame!!!!

I am so ready to get the party started!

Dad-Gum!

(Sorry I didn't add anything, but I'm excited to see Nix fill a gap. 23 chin-ups for a big boy considering Stewart? That has to be some kind of record for someone that big...)

Anyone have any ideas who might be the 1 or 2 players asked to step in at corner/safety? Daniels? Collinsworth? Jackson?

Last time I checked chin-ups don't win you football games. Lets all go change our pants and relax.

Ian Willliams squat went from 485 to over 600.
Ethan Johnson's squant went from 395 to 550.

This all goes into the conditioning element that was ignored by Weis. You build this base/core strength you'll see drastic improvement in the trenches.

I think you'll be surprised how much "being in shape" helps this team.

It's still damn impressive and is a pretty good indication that Stewart will be mauling defensive lineman and linebackers all game long...this leading to more wins.

I knew the two-time world's strongest man...he couldn't do one chin up. Isn't that crazy?

Chin-ups equate to extraordinary back strength. He certainly will have a massive pull. Expect a few kids slung around...

I'm excited to see who wins the battle for the ILB spot opposite Teo and also which two safety will end up starting.

True. However, as others have already stated, it is an indicator of overall strength and how hard these kids have been working this offseason. It has been well documented on this board about my deep disdain for Reuben Mendoza. Our football team just looked very, very weak on many instances in recent years. I, for one, am very happy at how the strength and conditioning aspect has improved so far this offseason. Those numbers are very telling.

The chin-up example with Stewart is doubly impressive. Not only is he hoisting 362 pounds, at 6'5", he is pulling it up a long, long way. Pull-ups, like bench press, are not friendly to guys with long arms. That blows my mind that he went from 3 pull-ups to 23.

Stewart was referred to as "Mr. Plow", but with that kind of back strength he might have his nickname changed to "Mr. Fling-you-around-like-a-rag-doll-before-I-drive-your-head-in-to-the-grass".

That is so telling about the Charlie Weis regime. Could Charlie game plan...yes. Could Charlie actually coach and develop players.... not even close. Maybe we won't get kicked around as often anymore. But to improve strength conditioning that much in so little time is simply incredible. How could Charlie not see that his players were not getting stronger. I know of high school football coaches keeping charts on their players to track them to see if their workouts were helping.

is it just me or does it seem like some of the coaches train like they play on the team also. Longo especially

That is a great point and I think it sets the example. Mendoza always looked like he just came from an afternoon at Hometown Buffet. Longo looks like he has been bending railroad spikes with his bare hands.

I had a high school basketball coach that was a triathlete and former European Pro Basketball player and he would constantly challenge us to endurance competitions. It was motivating to know your coach would get out there and bust his ass and sweat right along with all the crap you had to do.

I wonder if it has to do with the NFL background? I mean Charlie built his career working with men who were already world class athletes. It's a little different when you are an 18 yr old with raw talent coming out of high school. Charlie might not of understood exactly what it takes to develop kids like Florida, Bama, SC and Texas have been doing for the good part of the last decade. He saw that they were in the weight room and that must be enough.

Clearly Kelly focuses on strength and conditioning more than Charlie did.

I think kelly has been working out with Longo this summer too, that or he just doesnt eat when he gets stressed, its different for each person. On a more serious note, i feel much more confident now, not cocky, or expecting a championship now, but definantly good things this season and to come, also i dont want to draw many parallels between Weis and Kelly, but i feel like the first two seasons will be similar, first season big bow/bcs, second season top ranking. After that tho i think Kelly will make sure history doesn't repeat itself.

One major difference: We will not get blown out in any BCS bowl.

Agreed, if we get to a BCS game with the schedule we have, then we will undoubtly be able to compete with the Iowas, Boises, and (just cuz i have been a casual fan of them of for years) Arkansas of the BCS world. PS i dont think Arkansas can make the BCS but there the only other CFB team i like so i'd like to see them play.

I'm most impressed with Williams' progress. Squatting well over 100 lbs. more, putting on 10 lbs., and dropping body fat %? That's just rediculous.

I am very glad to see squat numbers being emphasized over the old bench press braggadocio. One of my brothers is an olympic weightlifting coach who prepares some Houston athletes for careers in major college football programs on the side [see the head coach of Team Houston for bona fides]. He was skeptical of ND weight training and felt that they looked fat and slow the last few years. He was concerned about what Longo's philosophy was going to be, as he knew Longo emphasized one thing that he felt did not work. He suggested that he hoped Longo would emphasize Power Cleans, Power Pulls, and especially Heavy Squats, all aimed at explosive muscle gains while on your feet where you play the game. When I told him about Chris Stewart's pull-ups, he thought that it was almost impossible. Things like Williams Squat gain would have made him smile. Maybe my Olympic Coach-of-the-Year will decide that we have a good strength coach afterall.
