How long do you think it will be before Notre Dame's defense can stop top offenses? I'm intrested Bob Diaco's changes in the defensive scheme. However Notre Dame's schedule features much tougher opponents then the Big East. I don't know if Notre Dame will ever become a defensive powerhouse, but if we do I can see large sucess in the future of Notre Dame.

At least a year. I'm thinking the defense will be a little better than last year. I still think our offense will obviously win the games. I say 2-3 years and this defense will be SOLID!

In my opinion it starts with the d-line. If they can generate pressure then life is easier for your backs. We couldn't get pressure last year with the d-line so we blitzed a shit load and it exposed our secondary. Saying that the d-line should be better this year and i think the rest of the defense will be to

Also, I was looking at Cincy's points allowed and it was high. This has me worried because we have Cincy's previous defensive cordinator. Could this because a lack of talent or is it Bob Diaco's scheme?

Cincy Defense was very young and inexperience this year the 2 years previously cincy was ranked in the top 40 of defense

I believe you are going to see the defense become a true strength this season. It might take a couple games for them to get into a groove, but this will be a very solid defense. Here are some of my reasonings.

DL: Last season, we were starting a Sophmore in Ethan Johnson. Red-shirt Fr with KLM. A very undersized and non-physical DE in John Ryan. We were backing up with a Red-shirt Fr in Sean Cwynar. Move to 2011. This year, we are starting a solid NT in Ian Williams. He will have depth behind him that has had 3 years to mature. At DE, we are starting KLM and Ethan who started so show some flashes last year, but were just not quite physically mature enough. Cwynar will give solid back-up to these two.

LB: Last season, we were starting a freshman in Manti. I don't care all world or not, he was learning the college game. We had a Junior in B. Smith who was the only true experienced upper classmen at LB. Then we had H. Smith playing OLB at about 210lbs. Move ahead to 2011. You will have a 2 players in the middle with atleast a season experience in Teo and Smith who both are athletic and over 240#'s. They will have back-ups with size in McDonald and Calabrese who are over 230#'s. At the outside position, we will have speed, athletism and size. With Filer and Fleming we will have two guys who can run with size. Fleming has already proven to be probably the second best tackler on D behind Teo. Filer will finally blossom as an OLB.

Safety: Last season, this should have been a strength and became a liability. We lost McCarthy, so that is leadership gone on D. This is the one position I am not 100% sure of both positions yet. 2011 brings some questions, but there are athletes. Harrison Smith will move back to where he is supposed to be at free safety. He struggled last year and I blame most of this on COACHING. The kid is an athlete, but was out of position many times. I believe he becomes that center field playmaker this season. At strong safety, we will have to see how spring plays out. There are a couple interesting options. We may see a split duty here. Against running teams, we may see Motta here with his size and strength for stopping the run. On passing downs, we may see some Slaughter as he is more CB and pass defender. The wild card here is McCarthy. He came in with more flair than his older bro, but we have not seen him really play yet.

CB: Last season this was supposed to be a strength, but struggled. I blame this on two things. First, we struggled with a pass rush, so we blitzed which meant these guys had to play soft to prevent getting burnt. Second, the players always looked like they were confused with the scheme. Move into 2011, we return 3 guys who I would take on my team any day. Walls, Blanton and Gray make up a really solid trio. I believe walls has great season in 2011 as he attempts to raise his NFL stock. Blanton and Gray will be competing like mad for playing time.

So in CONCLUSION. With the DL which will be bigger and deeper, the LB who will be more experienced and athletic, and CB who will all be experienced and solid, I find no way this defense does not show drastic improvements. The safety position is the only real question mark as we go into spring ball. There might be a few tweaks by Kelly, but we have about 9 returning starters.

DE: Ethan Johnson
NT: Ian Williams
DE: KLM
OLB: Steve Filer
OLB: Darius Fleming
ILB: Manti Teo
ILB: Brian Smith
CB: Darrin Walls
CB: Gary Gray
FS: Harrison Smith
SS: Zeke Motta?

Key Subs:
DE: Sean Cwynar
NT: Hafis Williams
OLB: Kerry Neal
ILB: Anthony McDonald
S: Slaughter, McCarthy
CB: Robert Blanton

Nice post as always Jonesman. This is an uneducated opinion, since I don't watch replays of the game, but it seemed to me the defensive front 7 was told what to do on every play, rather than read and react and cover zones from time to time. Just a thought. After all, ND had a chance to win every game last year.

Of course I could be waaayy off, but that was my impression at first and only sight. I think they have the athletes to be pretty good.

Compared to recent years, I would be MORE THAN ELATED if ND could reach a top 40 defense status! That would be a significant improvement!

the defense will be better, it has to...i mean, it couldnt be worse then it was. but nothing about it knocks my socks off. if the defense gets ranked above #50, it will be a pleasant surprise.

The front seven should be very improved, all with another year of experience. I think Filer comes into his own. The secondary could not be any worse. I would like the defense make plays and not wait for players to come to them.

....I think Filer comes into his own.......

I dont like to single out guys currently on the roster....but when I see Filer, I think of him getting his ankles broke by a freshman QB....TWICE. The image is as bad as 'the slip' from the USC game from another player. Hopefully Filer's fundamentals are vastly improved. someone tell that guy to look at the belt buckle when he is going after a tackle

That wasn't Filer, that was Fleming. And yes, that was embarrassing.

Great post Jonesman, but I'm in total wait-and-see with the defense. I remember getting into it with a USC fan last year after we shut out Nevada, telling him that our defense was vastly improved and would be a good but not great defense. I told him about out recruiting and our high-star athletes and yada yada yada. We argued and argued over Clausen and Tate (I was right) and the ND defense (I was pathetically wrong). I'm still embarrassed at how badly I fell for the mirage that came out of the Nevada game.

So while we all agree this defense will be better because it can't be any worse, I'll wait and see how they perform before I sip the kool-aide. The talent seems to be there. But this defense has burned me too many damn times in a row. Love the positivity though jonesy...

From what i see the biggest problem with our D is fundamentals. Wehave athletes but theyseriously lack fundamentals. The d line need sto grow as well. If the staff is as good as many believe i expect a much improved D but it will be at least 2011 before they can become elite

I agree with much of what has been said. We fundamentally were very weak. Another large issue I saw was the lack of attitude and leadership on defense. Filer and Fleming were at the in between stages of learning to put a hand on the ground, Harrison was all messed up, Blanton and Walls left the building and Teo was simply young but clearly showed the flashes of being special.

If we get guys comfortable, work on fundamentals and get a few leaders with a 'nasty' attitude to spread around, we have the players with the ability to be a very solid defense.

I think we have 4 years before we reach what i would call a competitive defensive program that can consistantly stop a good program. That assumes Diaco can find a way to reach these guys who are on their 3rd defensive scheme, and do enough with them to keep his job...somehow he needs to take what he has, be productive, and move toward his vision for the ND program. Seen enough fail now to know that must be tough to do.

I hope he starts VERY basic, and emphasizes position/technique, tackling, and conditioning...well and a little freakin passion. If you do those things well, and you have atheletes, that translates to a top 40 or 50 defense. Indeed, other teams will be better on D...but those will generally be "programs" with multiple years of recruiting and refinement.

The question I have, and Others on this forum have put forward... Mr. Diaco, will you be able to get 1 or 2 more stops a game over last years D...not much to ask at all, but dear lord think about what that would have done, and what it could do for us.

I agree with about everything that has been said. But I have to feel that the defense will be markedly better. What makes a great defence is a running game on offense and I think we will all be very surprised with the success we will have.

I'm not quite sure to make of this post. For one thing, the value of a running game is that it eats up clock...but ND's offense last year actually ranked very highly in terms of time of possession. Part of this might have had to do with our defense's tendency to give up big plays (thus reducing the amount of time the other team needs to score) but it will be very surprising if our offense is able to control the ball for more time than last years did (especially because the fundamental philosophy behind Kelly's offense is speed and certainly not ball control.)

Anyways, this D has the talent to be good (safety being a significant point of concern) but its going to have to get its act together. The 2 keys will be finding a safety who can keep everybody on the same page but who also is athletic enough to not let Toby Gerhart throw a wobbly 4th down floater into his coverage and improvement with the DL. It is absolutely critical in a 3-4 that the linemen occupy the O-Line and allow the backers to make plays.

Overall, I'm with NDinL.A... waiting and seeing.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the whole team... not just the d... when it comes to next season

I am fairly optimistic when it comes to the long term BK era at Notre Dame... I think he may he may be the one...

in terms of next year??? I really am starting to think... new QB... no more Golden... rebuilt O line... horrid D... AND our schedule which in my mind could have us start out 1-5/2-4ish...

I have very low expectations at this point... I'm thinking most people will go cliff diving and hate all over BK by mid season... maybe a 7-8 loss season.

funny thing is I'm okay with that thinking... seriously the last three years were so disappionting mainly due to my expectations... I think I may have rationalizied myself into a safer position... lol

but yeah, I'm not expectating overnight 180s.

Certainly a possibility...can't argue the logic...and I'm with you on the "safer position".

Only thing I can say is the new QB and Oline should be better able to cope than what we saw in 07 if for no other reason than scheme (also QB more mature, more skill guys, etc)...who knows if the players are any better or worse on the O line, or if the coaching is better or worse...but I think we have solid ball players at the skill positions.

Schedule is a bitch, and you can bet the new O is going to get heat right out of the gate...If I'm an opponent, I'm pinning my ears back until you show me you can hurt me...I expect baptism by fire for our new O-line and QB...It may look like 07 at times...but we'll adjust quicker.

D...who knows. Hoping they can prevent more of the 15-20 yard plays, and get a couple more stops. Just praying diaco goes for super simple so our guys can fly around...

We'll likely lose a few...I look at it, and I can't see 7 Ls just based on the coach's track record...I can see 4...but I'm looking for us to get one we aren't expected to...I believe we will.
