I don't know today's population stats, but I remember being told that Chicago was the biggest "Polish City" in the world with more than were in Warsaw. ...... True or not, my grandma on my Mom's side was first child born of Polish immigrants and a Chicagoan. Also, my Dad's neighborhood butted up against two other ethnics: one Italian, one polish (he had to fight one of the polish guys about once a week until the guy quit due to having alley gravel poured down his mouth.) They had a Chicago saying: That's more colorful than a Polish Church on fire.

Is it real polish or American polish?

Like my neck of the woods is basically all German/Norwegian/Swede but other than our last names and physical appearances, you probably wouldn't notice.

The languages are now gone other than maybe in a few nursing homes. To quote Michael Irvin, "the young women today arent learning how to cook. We're losing recipes!"
I mean...wasn't that kind of the point of America though? Eventually, we'd be our own culture. Polish American, Irish American., Italian American, German American, Japanese American, etc, etc.

I live in the Chicago suburbs in northern Kane County. I hear more Polish being spoken than Spanish in our area. Multiple Catholic churches out here do a Polish mass. My kids go to school with kids that are fluent in Polish.

We're not splitting atoms here, folks. This isn't Elvis Country.

A polish mass? They don't know English?

It’s madness that Japan got Brazil in R32. Meanwhile a heap of garbage teams play each other. Japan shiuld have had Egypt or Australia.
Idk how/what specifically....but, it feels like something needs to be adjusted for the knockout seeding moving forward. Because, they aren't going to go back to 32 total teams.

True, once you go to 48 you never go back. The thing is, you have to find out the source of the problem, because there were not much of upsets/unexpected group winners on the preliminary stage. Germany was originally planned to face France in 1/8 and both teams did their jobs and won their groups. Maybe it's the new reality.😀
Although Germany has to handle Paraguay first, not quite optimistic at halftime.

Would like Paraguay if for no other reason than it would shut up all the people who said "It's just Paraguay" when USA beat them
Yes, but France would win 5-0 and it would be a hidious game. Paraguay has guts, just boring as hell to watch. In reality, Germany likely would lose pretty badly to France also.

Correct, neither team is beating France, but at least Germany would try. Paraguay would play the low block all game, building a brick wall in front of net, and try to get the game to PKs. I mean, I get it, they have no other choice, but it's incredibly boring.

Paraguay has totally given up even the thought of playing offense. They're just dropping all 11 back basically and trying to hold on to pens.

Is this the way club soccer (EPL etc) gets played? If so how on earth is it popular. The last week has been a depressing advertisement for sport.

Paraguay looks to defeat Germany in PKs. And damn... After Paraguay gives it away, in Sudden Death, they take the W and send Germany packing. Auf Wiedersehen!

Germany had 75% possession and only scored a goal. German football is deeply broken currently. France has the skill players to overcome Paraguay's total disinterest in playing offense. Someone called them BYU, their total lack of balance reminds me more of Oklahoma.

Germany got robbed in OT but they really need to do some soul searching. 2018, 2022, and 2026 they've been objectively bad.
Yeah, they won the WC in 2014 and then just fell off a cliff, it's truly bizarre. They're normally so consistently good.

Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always lose.

Gary Lineker, probably

Parking the bus (a term that is getting overused just because there is so much of it and it makes it sound humorous - the term should maybe be "flooding") is too successful an approach now. Average teams with no hope have become very good at it. Even great attacking teams need luck to go their way to get a goal. In the box it is 5 (counting the keeper) against 2 a lot of the time.
