Will he get paid that much more in the NFL? Why is a similar coaching position and possibly a downgrade because he got the label of Co-Defensive Coordinator at ND and is just a CB coach for the Ravens. If the NFL was the Holy Grail Freeman would have been gone last season and Cignetti would be gone now as well. Even Kelly would be gone. Coaching at ND is now one of the prestige gigs for an assistant and a launching pad for a Head coaching gig at mid level college teams. Unless you prefer the lifestyle and NFL coaching experience why leave? Baltimore is also a shit hole and probably more expensive to live in a good neighborhood. Pretty sure much higher taxes as well. Leave for a DC gig somewhere not a position coaching gig. Hope we don’t lose anyone because he is gone.

This is like DMC leaving last year. Awesome guy who did an awesome job elevating the position as a whole, but you knew the time would come.

Like they did with Seider, I suspect they'll find a home-run replacement given how stocked the cupboard is in the secondary.

Slightly different in my opinion because DMC was great at ND but Seider was an upgrade. There is no upgrade for Mickens, not in college football. Nobody has the development/recruiting combination. This was ND losing their Hartline

Still possible for us to find the next jewel in the crown but if they’re that good they too will be fine in two years.

Feel like Seider seems like an upgrade one year in because he inherited Love. I think it will be interesting to see what he does with Aneyas.

I am as big of a Mickens fan as they come, so definitely bummed, but trying to put a positive spin on things.

Talking prior to him coming to ND. Seider is pretty widely regarded as the best RB coach in the country. He had a good set up at PSU prior to leaving

Loy saying there is a lot of interest in this position and a source told him everyone wants the gig. Prister heard a name of someone in the NFL that was in college not too long ago, but he wants to confirm this coach is a candidate before putting it out there.

Personal favorite is Jimmy Lake, who fits this mold as well... As we saw from Chris Ash, any failures as a head coach does not change underlying position coach/coordinator abilities. Jimmy Lake's run as DB coach at Washington was legendary. Really the only coach comparable to Mickens and he did it longer. Again, exclude any feelings about his head coaching stint when evaluating him as a DB coach alone.

The main thing with Lake is not that his HC tenure did not have good on field results it is the whole shoving a player thing, though he was fired without cause.

Way too much baggage on the surface with Lake. His career trajectory took a pretty big step back. If there are really guys lining up for this job and they can have a pick from a large pool, I don't know that the juice is worth the squeeze. Feels like Free and Ash would be doing Lake a serious favor giving him this job. You'd think that Lake would be able to resurrect his career being DB coach at ND if he was interested.

My guess would be Jahmile Addae. "Current" CBs coach with the Bills (don't know if the next staff will hold him over), and secondary coach at UGA and Miami before that.

I'm looking back through the last few pages, ain't nobody mentioned this former Safety?! Currently a high school head coach, was coaching DBs at Brown before that as well as helping out on defensive staff at Western Michigan. He's right down the road in Chicago!

Resurrect? I mean he was the Senior Def Asst on a team that should've went to the Super Bowl. I'm sure he's not mad at his career or making 3.2 million this past season.

I'm legitimately thrilled for Mickens. I hope tbe guy absolutely kills it for the Ravens in his reunion with Hamilton. It's relatively rare that a position coach has such profound impact on a program... But Mickens legitimately took a position group (DB) that was long thought to be a weakness at ND due to who they could attract, and turned it into arguably the best secondary group in the nation for multiple seasons.

Man I hope to see him back to ND as their DC someday!

I'd be all in on Jimmy Lake if MF thinks he would a positive addition.

One of the things I love about MF is that he isnt afraid to go big game hunting with his assistants. He went after Matt Luke... Seider and even Partridge. Its like he starts with the guys at the absolute top of the list and makes them say no before he moves on. I love the fact that he isnt afraid of dealing with egos.

I have no idea if Jimmy Lake would be a good fit or not... but I love the fact that Freeman has put ND in a position where they will go after him if they think he is a fit.
