I umpired little league for 12 years.

When I was first getting started the summer after HS, I was doing pitching machine games for 6 year olds.

I was the only ump and I'm calling balls and strikes from behind the pitcher machine.

I had a Dad after the game pick up his kids tee ball size bat while cussing me out and start charging me.
Most insane shit I've ever personally been involved with was 20+ years ago when I was at an offseason high school league... the least serious, least consequential sporting event you can imagine... and a parent on the opposing team tried to fight me and my 13 year old little brother in the parking lot because he was mad I scored too many goals. He literally grabbed me by the shirt as his wife tried to hold him back, it was surreal.

As a coach, I've seen too much wack shit to even remember half of it. Parents are crazy.

My ten year old daughter plays club soccer. We joined a new club at the start of the 2024/25 season. The parents on our team are absolutely nuts. They have zero problem yelling at other people's kids. It's horrible. I should be enjoying these years because they go by quickly but my wife and I literally dread going to these games. My parents stopped coming entirely.

Both of my brother in laws wrestled in college and coached for a time. It's brutal. I wouldn't even call a lot of what you see toxic masculinity because, as mentioned, some of the moms are the worst offenders. It's just ignorance.

I know many thought this whole NFL thing, which MF never once refuted and just vacationed away (well deserved), was a typical have your agent talk up your value, but do we also think it was to get some key wins, especially in the transfer acceptance process dept.?

ND more than any past year seems to be a university that is acting like any other university during the TP chaos, which is amazing when we think about how past years have gone down.

Maybe not playing in the CFP or a bowl game also helped to get organized and focused as well.

Imo, it was strategical to get roster exemptions and more staff.

It's toxic masculinity. Plenty of women encourage it from the men in their lives.

This is true, but with that sport in particular, I would describe it as something more of like a blood lust in my experience. It's not quite like what you'd see in any of the other sports where people act ignorant. Wrestling is something of a completely different mold. The behavior is more excessive.

Probably most similar in women’s competition are dance moms or cheerleader moms

I was a club soccer coach for ten years. I actually had a few occasions where I would call the referee over so I could secretly ask him to give me a yellow card because of the parent sideline. I could then walk over to the parents and tell them to STFU or the ref was going to clear the parents out.

Each year when I was evaluating players for the team, I also evaluated their parents. It took me a couple years but I eventually weeded out the troublesome parents and had a a really good, fun team that was filled with families that were in it for the right reasons - we even won a state cup.

I hate soccer parents…

I'm not going to pretend I know what wrestling mom's are like, I have just seen plenty of women promote toxic masculinity through behavior and/or influence and what you've described seems like an easy connection.

My one kid wrestled 1 year in elementary and saw several fights between parents
My friend's kid did it one year as well. Several fights between parents and that was the end of his wrestling career

Based on what I’ve seen as a former coach and parent/uncle, youth sports in general have become pretty gross and more of a way for hucksters to make a living more than anything.

I can’t tell you how many parents I’ve meet who have their kids playing on travel teams year round in various sports with the hope of their kid “getting a scholarship”.

Takes about 5 minutes of watching 99% of them play to understand that ain’t happening.

This club is pretty bad. Typical American soccer parents who want to win now. The girls are 10 years old. Could care less about player and skill development. They want to win trophies. At ten years old.

It's belligerent ignorance I don't have time for, and we gave it enough of a chance, but when our own parents start yelling at our ten year old daughter, it's enough.

We usually sit at the far end by the corner flag and the only parents we like are the goalkeeper's parents, which should explain enough.

Had the same experience coaching baseball. My son was on a team w/ good coaches & parents but their goal was to advance from a AAA team to a Major team. We were a good AAA team but Major teams were ones who pulled kids from around the state & even beyond. We usually got beat when we played up.

So my son wanted a change. He was happy to go down to AA if it meant not having to specialize & having fun. We did what you did…recruited parents more than kids. For the three years we had a blast. Only one parent who led us to not asking them back. Other than that, best decision we made & our sons have great memories of competing for state titles w/ their buddies.

That sucks. It is way too frustrating to put up with that.

I didn’t actually have time to be coaching while I was - I was traveling the eastern half of the US during this time - but I did it to make sure my daughter could enjoy her experience. I hope you can find a team that will help your daughter love and learn the game.

That’s awesome. It makes the experience so much better. It’s what youth sports should be about.

My daughter plays soccer and the one travel team she plays on i am legit embarrassed to be in the crowd. There are about 5 parents that I would love to go shove my size 15 Nike up their ass until it chokes them and makes them shut up. Im all for supporting your kids, but these asshats are unbelievable yelling at 12-14 year olds on the other team, coaches, refs, other parents.

I coached youth FB for 12 years, Little League for about 8 years and ran the HS wrestling club for about 15 years. My youngest is now 40. I can tell you parents have been doing this for that long.

Wrestling moms are much worse than the dads - from my recollection.
