This. He coached at JMU for 5 years. Not sure why people act like he was just gifted some random team’s transfers.
There is something to be said to getting talented guys to create a culture. The IU culture is inherent to JMU. When that leaves, will the next guys carry it on? Maybe. But it gets more difficult with each class as you bring in more and more mercenaries.

The JMU backbone was recruited and developed by Cig. It will only be easier for him to recruit and develop at Indiana.
Right, but he did that without having to worry about half of his roster leaving for other schools at the drop of a hat and many of those guys had up to six years to “develop”.

The fact of the matter is Indiana has not recruited well the last two cycles.

We’ll see how that plays out next year I suppose.

Yeah, it doesn’t take much for one or two bad actors on the roster to torpedo an entire season.

See ND 2016.

Anyone betting against Cignetti at this point is a fool. He’s definitely proven me wrong. You think he cares about next season? He’s focused on beating Oregon in the biggest game of his career. ND fans care about next season though because our 2025 season is already over

2 things can be true:

1) Cig is an elite evaluator, developer and coach
2) the backbone of the current squad is old as hell, they go maybe 2 deep but not 3, they’ll probably step back next year

#2 doesn’t diminish #1 but is a hell of an incentive to win it all this year.

I’m not betting “against him” I’m just pointing out one of the fundamental flaws in terms of the long term sustainability of his success by pointing out that this same model has blown up in other people’s faces.

Of course he “cares about next season” all college coaches do because of the recruiting/portal cycles and that is why they are trying to land….Nick Marsh!

Ta-da!

He's proven to be for real, but sustained success is earned through recruiting.
I think that's all anyone is trying to say here.

Traditionally sure, but this new college football is only a few years old. Every year everyone is essentially a free agent. I never thought I’d see the day turnover at ND would be so high. Would the 4 for 40 even resonate?

Back on the topic of Marsh -- I see him pegged by most places as a 1st or 2nd round WR. That's what we need. Not "pretty good" we need guys that are pro prospects for CJ Carr to reach his potential.
Marsh has Malachi Fields potential, it's too bad ND only got 1 year with Fields. If I am Marsh also want to go to a place who has an established QB like ND.

That's what has me holding out hope that if he's not all about the money it's a no brainer that he's ours to lose. We have the best QB in the nation coming back. Plus I imagine they'll push the narrative that we'll toss it around a bit more next year without the two guys we had at RB. As long as the money makes sense I cautiously expect him to be Irish
