I can see why Ash wants to play a zone, most of our DBs are not great man to man cover guys (Moore is, Gray vs non elite anyway) but we have to learn how and that ain't happening.

I feel for this kid on some level. Definitely a guy who should sit for another year and build up his speed and technique. Having said that, though, the next man in has to look the part and his lack of speed jumps off the screen. He also doesn't have the physicality to compensate for it at the moment.

Smith should get 90 percent of the reps when he returns.

Pretty sure Prister and Co. threw a lot of love his way in the spring, which is another reminder to take hype with some degree of skepticism until proven on Saturdays.

Agree it took Watts 4 years to breakout

I’ll be honest, I’m not disappointed in Hobbs because I didn’t expect him to play this many snaps. He’s only a sophomore

I’m disappointed because all I heard was great things about Smith and sounds like he’s not good in pass coverage to the extent that they need to play Hobbs

Half the time these guys are stumping for their sources. Last week one of the ISD guys had a story with a throwaway line that Buchner should get a goalline package. Things that make you go "hmm..."

What if the extra point play... WAS the goal line package?

pressure on the QB would be a great first step. If not, every QB on the schedule will sit back and pick that secondary apart.

I've been out of the loop this week

Sounds like Hobbs lost his job as #2? Being moved to corner? I'm sorry - but how in the world do you play all spring and fall camp and not realize the kid is playing out of position?
"We need to stop asking kids to do things the can't"
Was that about Hobbs? (And others)
This stuff shouldn't be happening

If Hobbs was playing like this in fall camp it should have been a concerted effort to get Golden ready for nickel

I hate all of this

I'm guessing he gets one more game this year and they redshirt him to save a year.

Dang! I was still hopeful for him. I know he didn’t show it early in the season, but you have to think the potential was there. Pretty sure I remember seeing Ben Mo say that Hobbs might end up being better than him and Lenny. Best of luck to him.

I have faith B Mo never lied like that about him being better than Lenny

I’m usually woefully against piling on but NDs choice to rotate in Week 1 was IMO based on a thought to build depth and test what you got in a young secondary thinking a loss may not punish you when you would go on an beat A&M the next week. Then in Week 2, Smith was ruled out last second. I know some here disagreed big time but I still maintain Hobbs was so bad that it did have a large impact in the secondary performance Week 1 - 2. When you lose 2 games by 4 points, a unplayable nickel against 2 really good slot WRs can be the diffence in such games.

Would Hobbs out & Johnson in be worth 4 points?

Thought he showed some real promise in the B&G game, but miami and a&m showed he either wasnt ready or isn't talented enough to compete at that level.

Of course part of this is on Hobbs, but playing him early figures to be one of the few misevals we've seen from Mickens.

I don't put losses on any one person, but if he makes that interception vs aTm, ND is 11-1 right now, ranked 3 or 4, and is waiting on a R2 playoff game.

This is the same with Shuler’s missed play vs Miami. Nitpicking, any little thing in those 2 games changes our season. Fields not fumbling. Denbrock and Ash both costing us too, etc…. It sucks, but we are for sure stacking some talent and will be just fine (as long as Mickens stays 🤞🏽).

Shuler making one mistake and Hobbs getting abused for two games aren’t quite the same thing.
