I don't know. It took that absolute perfect storm of almost every result for 4-5 weeks going against us for this to even transpire today. If that is a different ACC team behind us that we didn't happen to directly lose to they don't jump us. If it's a different SEC team, Tennessee or Missouri falls out of the playoffs. If OU loses to Alabama they're out. If Auburn hangs on to beat Alabama they're out. If Virginia pulls it out against Duke they're in and we're likely safe. If Miami makes the ACC championship game we're in. If the SEC refs call a hold on Hinnish on the last play against A&M we're in. If Buchner could complete a pass 90% of this board could complete against Miami we're in. If LSU doesn't give up a ridiculous 70 yard TD against a putrid OU offense we're in. If the SEC had already moved to a 9 game schedule we're in.

The amount of bad luck we've had is so crazy that I could keep going.

FSU's buyout this year was $165 million. How much could NDs be? Even if it's half that who cares? That's only x4 the amount we made in our playoff run last season alone. Have someone ask Pete about the $100 million dollar buyout and let Pete answer "pocket change".
I don't know about that one, but yeah, the others are right. It was poor play early + very bad luck + follow the money.

If Yuracheck is still AD at Arkansas in 2028, I hope Pete revokes his credentials an hour before kickoff and tells him to leave campus or he will be removed for trespassing. Then give him a tape labelled "ND-Miami 8/31/2025" and if he pops it in, it's just highlights of the game against Arkansas with Michael Jordan dubbed over it saying "haha, you bitch, fuck you" on loop

The problem with just quitting the ACC is scheduling.

We're already struggling to fill the back half of the season. B1G teams seemingly won't play us after Oct. 1, and there's no particular incentive for SEC teams to either. At least the ACC will play us in November, even if most of their teams are so soft we get no credit for it.

If we're going to do this, we probably need long-term deals with several teams, many of the most likely of whom (Clemson, BC, Syracuse and/or Pitt, Stanford, maybe Duke or Wake) are in the ACC and would face intense pressure not to play us. Or we collude with Clemson and Florida State and pull the pin on the entire stupid conference. Then those teams would gladly have us come fill their stadiums.

It appears we give a cut of NBC money to ACC schools so leaving them would involve NBC signing off and working something out with Big 10/SEC. Problem with that is, how many slices of our cake can we give up? How much of their cakes would they give up for olympic sports plus some football games? (likely want us as full member anyway)

How are we feeling about Pete B? I’m pretty worried we have a weak and naive AD

I legitimately don’t know if another school has a better fit for the current landscape. Pete was a walk-on Punter under Holtz and was the Chairman of NBC Sports before becoming AD. He has a Georgetown JD and spent 15+ years negotiating media rights. He was made in a lab to be ND’s AD.

Yeah, but let's be candid: Pete got rolled and embarrassed this week. He kept a low profile during the nonstop media campaign against ND. Was he misinformed about ND's status? I hope he learns a lesson from all this.

And now he is saying we have some sort of deal where we get in if we're ranked in the top 12. I mean, great, but that doesn't mean anything given what happened. We'll just be moved outside the top 12 if they want to screw us.

Some of the stuff he said sounds really naive, particularly “ND gave the best presentation in two years!”

This was a huge fuck up on his part. You don’t get many more chances.

We need to schedule UCONN. They are independent too and would probably be down. BYU might be down as well.

To be fair, I have no idea how much it mattered. But it's very odd that they waited this long to flip ND and Miami if head-to-head was so important.

I legitimately don’t know what he could have done when ESPN is doing stuff like spending the last 5 minutes of the game final broadcast of the year shilling for Miami. Would ND tweeting out Sargarin rankings have moved the needle?

Agreed.

I do think they could have been MUCH more vocal about what metrics the committee actually uses and how elite ND was in those.

Instead we just let ESPN use the same SOR, SOS and Top 25 record graphic for every single game they broadcast the last 3 weeks.

Just completely let them misinform the public with “metrics” that did not favor ND

I hesitate to talk like this, where firing is used as a punishment for past mistakes rather than as a last resort when it's clear the person is no longer the right one for the job. It happens a lot with coaches, and it is you end up with Alabama fans calling for Saban to be fired just for losing a game once in a while.

End of the day, you need third-party validators in the media to make the case. Your own athletic director (or coach) are too easy to dismiss.

A lot of people were hyping Miami, and ESPN has been in the bag for the SEC for weeks. Only in the last 24 hours did you start to see people saying "why is this about Notre Dame vs. Miami when it's Bama and Oklahoma that suck?" But by then it was too late. I do wonder if the NBC ecosystem could have been more vocal.

ND needs to push for a ranking system like the BCS, where everyone knows in advance what counts and what doesn't. In particular, if CCGs don't count, then they won't count. Fine. Or maybe they count for half as much. Whatever. But not the current rule, which is: they count for everyone except Bama.

No more committees.

I expect him to be a passive Little bitch.

This wouldn’t have happened with Jack.
That's my thought. Don't know enough about Pete yet, but despite some people's criticisms of Jack he did a great job navigating the playoff and bowl system over the years, always being a strong representative for the university and making sure we got a fair deal. I'm not sure Pete has been as good in that role yet.

We’re in this situation/system because of Swarbrick. The ACC agreement hasn’t helped us in football except to beat mediocre teams just filling our schedule. We should’ve made that arrangement with the B1G instead but he lacked the foresight. He tried to maintain independence by negotiating this playoff format but it obviously didn’t help us this year. And fuck Under Armour

Hopefully Pete will see the writing on the wall and get ND into the B1G sooner than later. Our schedule is a joke and I bet those upcoming SEC games will get canceled especially after what happened to Texas this year. Let’s see if the ACC survives without us. Maybe we can get Clemson to join the B1G with us

Need to find more Clemson style deals and go full Indy from ACC. I think BYU would choose to go back to independent if they thought they could but even if not they actually seem willing to schedule teams. FSU if smart would sign up for a deal like Clemson. The top of the ACC have terrible sos from ACC and need big games to sell tickets. Manage to keep USC and Stanford and our schedules already better than any ACC team. Look something like:
1. Low level big ten team
2. Mac team
3. SEC team
4. ???
5. Clemson
6. Stanford
7. BYU
8. Navy
9. FSU
10. ???
11. ???
12. USC

TBH, I'm not sure criticism of Pete is warranted. While all of us would love to see a public flogging of ESPN and the CFPC, I have to believe he will take care of business behind the scenes much like Jack did. He will make things public when warranted.

I jokingly said we should join the ACC last week, but is that such a bad idea? The path to the playoffs would be pretty easy and difficult for the committee to leave us out given we would win it damn near every year.

There was a lot of Miami and Alabama noise Saturday leading into those games. A lot. Jesse Palmer was broadcasting Tech and BYU but wouldn't shut up about Miami.

Saban was talking up Miami and Bama Saturday morning. People want him to be Commissioner of College Football.

They probably lost the PR battle in the end, which is probably more important than the merit of their season. H2H had little to do with all of this in the end. Miami was ranked behind ND for weeks. Then suddenly when it counted they weren't.

Have to have a closer.

After their borderline juvenile pro-Miami propaganda posts on X? They should bend the knee to us, not the other way around.

After all the ACC support for Miami getting in and lobbying against us plus Nardouchie saying Miami is better than we were, hell no to the ACC. Go join the Big 12 or some other shit conference that Tulane or James Madison is in and get in every year, but not the ACC
