Why are fans trying to explain away the defensive disaster? The "injuries/inexperience/incompetence" explain a small drop. Not a drop to the bottom of CFB.
Everything has an explanation. We can get into intelligent and complex explanations, or we can go, "Herr derr, Trash is garbage," like a bunch of morons.

The man vs. Zone only tells half the story, though. You can't sit in zone and not bring pressure. You will get picked apart. You can't man up and not bring pressure. As you said, that is suicide. The whole idea of our in your face man defense working is because of our exotic blitz packages and getting after the passer. If a WR has a step, but we have a blitzer in the QBs face, thats where we get the errant throws and the picks, sacks, etc.

That being said, go back and watch film from last year. It also isnt just blitzing to blitz. Al used a lot of movement and twists to get pressure. The lineman were confused of where the pressure is coming from. From me just watching it on TV, it seems like our pressure, when we do finally bring some, are just the simple fire A gap variety.
The post you responded to specifically discussed the fact that we're blitzing less this year, so no, half the story was not missing. As to suicide, if you can neither get to the QB nor cover anybody, it's a matter of how guickly you want to die. Blitz or don't. Either way, you're fucked. However, blitzing will tend to lead to the quicker TD.

As to going back and watching last year's film, I'll pass. I remember Golden's defense the same way you do.

You have to think Freeman is a better play caller and coach now than he would have been 3 years ago since he has been watching Golden for 3 years. He would have learnt a lot.

But the flow and rhythm to call plays and then manage the team is a lot to ask

MF is going to have to find a way manage double duty for 9 games.

I'd be fine giving Mickens a shot, but that would mean firing Ass. And, while we are all here for that I don't think MF will do that.

A quiet demotion allows Ash to save face and then there can be a mutual parting of ways or whatever BS they want to call it and then we bring in a real football coach to be the DC next season.

I didn't have a chance to watch the whole game yet. Just saw bits and pieces on my phone. Did hear rumblings about MF being really aggravated on the sidelines about the defense. When in the game was this? Was he pissed at Ash? or the players?

The only way to save this season is to get Ash as far away from this program as you can. So if they want to keep him in the payroll until the end of the season and he sits on a beach in Miami make it happen.

Can someone with ball knowledge explain why Marcus can’t easily both run the D and manage the team overall?

Honestly all they need to do is pick some of Golden's stunts from last year and run them.. Gotta think the personnel knows how to.
Yeah that’s probably the most frustrating part about all of this. I get there a new players on the back end and that takes a while to gel but the front seven lost three players and the guys that took their place played a ton last year. Too many times we rush 4 straight up with no stunts or twists. Hinnish, especially benefits from movement

Took the family up. We stayed through it all and had an amazing time.

The kids really enjoyed dapping up the players during the walk and doing push ups after touchdowns in our section.

They both can’t wait to go back, and that makes my post game observation a simple “we won, and enjoyed it, on to the next one”

Can't wait to take my son to games (he turns one in a couple of weeks). I try to live in the moment and try to avoid looking down the road with him, but that is one thing I literally cannot wait to do: relive those moments I had with my old man in South Bend.

No it was his post-game presser. He was rambling (rightfully so) about how you can keep trying to go through different coverages (C1, 2 3 or 4) and rush 4 but none of it matters if you're not getting pressure. You can't cover guys forever regardless.

Second half they definitely dialed up more heat. Outside of the garbage time TD against our 2s, they played much better. I know it's just Purdue but hopefully that's a sign of things to come. It can't get any worse.

That's what i don't get about Ash...if it's true he is generally hesitant to bring pressure and leave less in coverage, when on earth would he ever try to shake things up? With how bad the D was through 2 games, you'd think he'd have the common sense to try something different. Just a bad situation.
